For weeks, the West Side of Chicago has been on edge as gruesome stories circulate on social media about a predator targeting young women.
Six young girls and women were reported missing. Three have been found safe and a fourth has been contacted. But two others -- a 15-year-old girl and a 26-year-old woman -- were found dead.
Police don't consider their deaths homicides. Investigators don't believe the death is related to any of the missing cases, but that has not stopped online rumors about young women being mutilated and tortured.
Some people have gone so far as to post pictures of a person they believe responsible. Whispers of “serial killer” have been heard on the streets as mothers talk about being extra cautious with their children, even though they are not sure what to believe.
“It’s a scary thing,” LaShanda McGee said Sunday as she walked on Hamlin Avenue, just steps from where 15-year-old Sadaria Davis was found. “Don’t nobody want to lose a child.”
