If something isn't done soon, there damn sure won't be any stopping it. I live near a very small town. The ratio of law enforcement personnel (including State Troopers and Game Warden) to citizens here is about 1:7. At this rate it won't be long before it's 1:5 and beyond. And there ain't shit happening around here!!!! THANK GOD that at least (for the time being) they're pretty complacent as far as the local citizens go. But I could see that changing in a hurry if (for example) the sheriff were to retire and some "young upstart" were to get in... Yesterday I went in front of a federal judge with a client charged with "felon in possession". He just wanted to go home for christmas before serving his federal time, which he will start in January. His family has a lot of money, so he wanted bail. He has two boys, 5 & 7. He would have submitted to House Arrest, electronic monitoring, peeing in a cup, and would have posted 50 thousand just to spend Christmas with the kids. Bail was denied. Out and out denied. You know, if the magistrate had just wanted to lock him up, she could have required a 75 thousand dollar cash bail (which he couldn't have posted anyway), but instead she out and out denied bail. You would think that would violate the constitution, but no. The Supreme Crows have said it doesn't. You be the judge: "Amendment VIII Excessive bail shall not be required, nor excessive fines imposed, nor cruel and unusual punishments inflicted." The loophole the feds use is that they aren't requiring "excessive bail", they're just denying bail. How fucking retarded is that? The magistrate (and I know her personally, she really is a decent person) has just gotten used to denying bail whenever the government asks her to. That's how decent people become fascists.
