(04-12) 11:41 PDT NEW YORK, (AP) --

The charisma king of the 2008 presidential field. The world's best golfer. The captain of the New York Yankees. Besides superstardom, Barack Obama, Tiger Woods and Derek Jeter have another common bond: Each is the child of an interracial marriage.

For most of U.S. history, in most communities, such unions were taboo.

It was only 40 years ago — on June 12, 1967 — that the U.S. Supreme Court knocked down a Virginia statute barring whites from marrying nonwhites. The decision also overturned similar bans in 15 other states.

Since that landmark Loving v. Virginia ruling, the number of interracial marriages has soared; for example, black-white marriages increased from 65,000 in 1970 to 422,000 in 2005, according to Census Bureau figures. Factoring in all racial combinations, Stanford University sociologist Michael Rosenfeld calculates that more than 7 percent of America's 59 million married couples in 2005 were interracial, compared to less than 2 percent in 1970.

Coupled with a steady flow of immigrants from all parts of the world, the surge of interracial marriages and multiracial children is producing a 21st century America more diverse than ever, with the potential to become less stratified by race.

"The racial divide in the U.S. is a fundamental divide. ... but when you have the 'other' in your own family, it's hard to think of them as 'other' anymore," Rosenfeld said. "We see a blurring of the old lines, and that has to be a good thing, because the lines were artificial in the first place."

The boundaries were still distinct in 1967, a year when the Sidney Poitier film "Guess Who's Coming to Dinner" — a comedy built around parents' acceptance of an interracial couple — was considered groundbreaking. The Supreme Court ruled that Virginia could not criminalize the marriage that Richard Loving, a white, and his black wife, Mildred, entered into nine years earlier in Washington, D.C.

But what once seemed so radical to many Americans is now commonplace.

Many prominent blacks — including Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas, civil rights leader Julian Bond and former U.S. Sen. Carol Moseley Braun — have married whites. Well-known whites who have married blacks include former Defense Secretary William Cohen and actor Robert DeNiro.

Last year, the Salvation Army installed Israel Gaither as the first black leader of its U.S. operations. He and his wife, Eva, who is white, wed in 1967 — the first interracial marriage between Salvation Army officers in the United States.

Opinion polls show overwhelming popular support, especially among younger people, for interracial marriage.

That's not to say acceptance has been universal. Interviews with interracial couples from around the country reveal varied challenges, and opposition has lingered in some quarters.

Bob Jones University in South Carolina only dropped its ban on interracial dating in 2000; a year later 40 percent of the voters objected when Alabama became the last state to remove a no-longer-enforceable ban on interracial marriages from its constitution.

Taunts and threats, including cross burnings, still occur sporadically. In Cleveland, two white men were sentenced to prison earlier this year for harassment of an interracial couple that included spreading liquid mercury around their house.

More often, though, the difficulties are more nuanced, such as those faced by Kim and Al Stamps during 13 years as an interracial couple in Jackson, Miss.

Kim, a white woman raised on Cape Cod, met Al, who is black, in 1993 after she came to Jackson's Tougaloo College to study history. Together, they run Cool Al's — a popular hamburger restaurant — while raising a 12-year-old son and 10-year-old daughter in the state with the nation's lowest percentage (0.7) of multiracial residents.

The children are homeschooled, Kim said, because Jackson's schools are largely divided along racial lines and might not be comfortable for biracial children. She said their family triggered a wave of "white flight" when they moved into a mostly white neighborhood four years ago — "People were saying to my kids, 'What are you doing here?'"

"Making friends here has been really, really tough," Kim said. "I'll go five years at a time with no white friends at all."

Yet some of the worst friction has been with her black in-laws. Kim said they accused her of scheming to take over the family business, and there's been virtually no contact for more than a year.

"Everything was race," Kim said. "I was called 'the white devil.'"

Her own parents in Massachusetts have been supportive, Kim said, but she credited her mother with foresight.

"She told me, 'Your life is going to be harder because of this road you've chosen — it's going to be harder for your kids,'" Kim said. "She was absolutely right."

Al Stamps said he is less sensitive to disapproval than his wife, and tries to be philosophical.

"I'm always cordial," he said. "I'll wait to see how people react to us. If I'm not wanted, I'll move on."

It's been easier, if not always smooth, for other couples.

Major Cox, a black Alabamian, and his white wife, Cincinnati-born Margaret Meier, have lived on the Cox family homestead in Smut Eye, Ala., for more than 20 years, building a large circle of black and white friends while encountering relatively few hassles.

"I don't feel it, I don't see it," said Cox, 66, when asked about racist hostility. "I live a wonderful life as a nonracial person."

Meier says she occasionally detects some expressions of disapproval of their marriage, "but flagrant, in-your-face racism is pretty rare now."

Cox — an Army veteran and former private detective who now joins his wife in raising quarter horses — longs for a day when racial lines in America break down.

"We are sitting on a powder keg of racism that's institutionalized in our attitudes, our churches and our culture," he said, "that's going to destroy us if we don't undo it."

In many cases, interracial families embody a mix of nationalities as well as races. Michelle Cadeau, born in Sweden, and her husband, James, born in Haiti, are raising their two sons as Americans in racially diverse West Orange, N.J., while teaching them about all three cultures.

"I think the children of families like ours will be able to make a difference in the world, and do things we weren't able to do," Michelle Cadeau said. "It's really important to put all their cultures together, to be aware of their roots, so they grow up not just as Swedish or Haitian or American, but as global citizens."

Meanwhile, though, there are frustrations — such as school forms for 5-year-old Justin that provide no option for him to be identified as multiracial.

"I'm aware there are going to be challenges," Michelle said. "There's stuff that's been working for a very long time in this country that is not going to work anymore."

The boom in interracial marriages forced the federal government to change its procedures for the 2000 census, allowing Americans for the first time to identify themselves by more than one racial category.

About 6.8 million described themselves as multiracial — 2.4 percent of the population — adding statistical fuel to the ongoing debate over what race really means.

Kerry Ann Rockquemore, professor of African-American studies at the University of Illinois-Chicago, is the daughter of a black father and white mother, and says she is asked almost daily how she identifies herself.

The surge in interracial marriage comes at "a very awkward moment" in America's long struggle with racism, she says.

"We all want deeply and sincerely to be beyond race, to live in a world where race doesn't matter, but we continue to see deep racial disparities," Rockquemore said. "For interracial families, the great challenge is when the kids are going to leave home and face a world that is still very racialized."

The stresses on interracial couples can take a toll. The National Center for Health Statistics says their chances of a breakup within 10 years are 41 percent, compared to 31 percent for a couple of the same race.

In some categories of interracial marriage, there are distinct gender-related trends. More than twice as many black men marry white women as vice versa, and about three-fourths of white-Asian marriages involve white men and Asian women.

C.N. Le, a Vietnamese-American who teaches sociology at the University of Massachusetts, says the pattern has created some friction in Asian-American communities.

"Some of the men view the women marrying whites as sellouts, and a lot of Asian women say, 'Well, we would want to date you more, but a lot of you are sexist or patriarchal,'" said Le, who attributes the friction in part to gender stereotypes of Asians that have been perpetuated by American films and TV shows.

Kelley Kenney, a professor at Kutztown University in Pennsylvania, is among those who have bucked the black-white gender trend. A black woman, she has been married since 1988 to a fellow academic of Irish-Italian descent, and they have jointly offered programs for the American Counseling Association about interracial couples.

Kenney recalled some tense moments in 1993 when, soon after they moved to Kutztown, a harasser shattered their car window and placed chocolate milk cartons on their lawn. "It was very powerful to see how the community rallied around us," she said.

Kenney is well aware that some blacks view interracial marriage as a potential threat to black identity, and she knows her two daughters, now 15 and 11, will face questions on how they identify themselves.

"For older folks in the black community," she said "it's a feeling of not wanting people to forget where they came from."

Yet some black intellectuals embrace the surge in interracial marriages and multiracial families; among them is Harvard law professor Randall Kennedy, who addressed the topic in his latest book, "Interracial Intimacies: Sex, Marriage, Identity, and Adoption."

"Malignant racial biases can and do reside in interracial liaisons," Kennedy wrote. "But against the tragic backdrop of American history, the flowering of multiracial intimacy is a profoundly moving and encouraging development."

I would prefer to marry someone similar to me, but that's just me, I sure wouldn't want to impose my preference on anyone else.

Right there with ya, RJ.

The guys pulling the chain on that particular lavatory all happen to be rich and white, albeit many of them are apparently not Christian.

Don't blame the blacks for Bush.

Good post RickyJ. I have been in a mixed race marriage and my son works in trauma medicine in North Carolina. I am still the best of friends with my ex and her African American family, many of whom did not care for me at all art first.

My Mother unfortunately died still hating me for being a 'race-mixer,' and for all the bad things I have said about some of her political heroes like Reagan and the two Bush pResidents. So it goes. ;-)

Now that we know how complicated DNA is, and how many matches have to be made for male and female DNA to line up and make a child, it shows that what we call races are for all intents and purposes scientifically identical.

I've already said too much.

In some categories of interracial marriage, there are distinct gender-related trends. More than twice as many black men marry white women as vice versa, and about three-fourths of white-Asian marriages involve white men and Asian women.

Out here in swinging California, there are many white women who dally with black men, for all the advertised reasons, but comparatively few that go on to marry them. My own observation is that black-white is seldom a good, long-term match, even compared with other interracial unions.

Quite a few white men out here have Asian girlfriends that they often go on to marry, out of curiosity, exotophilia, or a conviction that white women don't treat them with respect. Asian women correspondingly seek out white men because, as the article says, they often feel their own men don't treat them with respect.

There are also plenty of white men here who seek out Hispanic women, again often out of a conviction that they will be more traditional than white women. Hispanic women in turn are not infrequently looking for "un señor blanco," who will be better off financially and more indulgent a husband than a Hispanic one.

Interracial liaisons are a diversion as far as I am concerned. I relate best to women of my own race, and to one especially.*

That is really pitiful. To talk about someone right in front of them in language you think they do not understand is incredibly insensitive and rude.

Exactly what many Mexicans in the US do on a daily basis. A girlfriend of mine, who is fluently bi-lingual [she is interacial and although hispanic, looks white], once caught a couple of guys in line at Six Flags doing just this, and when she turned around and let them have it in mile-a-minute Spanish, they almost ran away.

Yeah, I had a couple of Mexicans working at the storage place I use comment I must be a homeless druggie visiting my storage locker on a bicycle. I worked in the woods for twelve years fighting fires and planting trees with a large number of Mexicans.

I understand enough Spanish, especially of the rude, insulting variety you are not going to disrespect me to my face with it easily.

They were surprised, and looked more annoyed then embarrassed to be called on their verbiage. When I repeated what they had said in flawless Mexican Spanish to their boss in the face of their lame denials, he chose to believe me.

Guess he knew them pretty well anyway. I generally like Mexicans and have enjoyed working with them. But often when they clique up and split a crew into them and us more then we naturally do as workers native to the United States, it can cause problems.

I would have to learn Spanish fluently, speaking and writing before I could work running 20 man single resource crews in the woods on fires, and I would have to settle to be one of the two squad bosses which would make me a heave physical laborer out there again.

Which is why I 'retired' from working on wild land fire incidents in 1994. I have a friend Fielding two crews who wants me to work for him doing this, but I am passing on the opportunity.

Last Saturday a large negro stood behind my daughter in a local movie theater and shouted loudly how he hated whites. The people w/him said nothing, nor did the other blacks standing in line. I dare say had the color of the people been reversed, the offending white would have been censored by his peers. Perhaps he’d even have been arrested for hate? I know this same story is played out many times over is countless cities across America. We have Sharpton/Jackson and the goofy, feel-good, intimidated whites to thank for this new low in race relations we’re experiencing in America.

With all due respect, you should have given him a verbal reality check. I do that when I hear racism, even if it feels uncomfortable doing so.

I find projecting a firm, polite well articulated rebuke is not something people will go to fists over.

People actually know what is right or wrong and will accept requests to remain civil, and it sounds like you were near an overgrown child who was pushing the limits anyway.

I look at it this way, It is my responsibility to make the next victims of the insufferable bully in question have an easier time dealing with them. Relentless public pressure does have an effect on people.

In any event, I'll long die speaking my mind then ever to suffer the thousand deaths of being censored by fearing to say something. So don't bother saying "I told you so" if I ever come in here complaining About some racist punching my lights out. ;-D

It's also easy for me to talk too being in a city with less then five percent non Caucasian population too.

I was aware a few times in Portland -- which has a substantial African American population -- of situations where if you were facing several like minded haters, one would be a fool to go up against a mob mentality; which is a much different thing then what you are dealing with with one or two people.

SICK! Just sick.

It makes some biological sense. White man is not defending his territory. The continued presence of the other says to some white women that the others may possess attributes her offspring may need in order to survive.

On the flip side, IMO, most non-white women are really female in a way most white women are not. For this I mostly blame feminism.

Selective out-breeding may prove useful in improving the white gene pool.

Except cat and dogs are domestic animals bred to develop the variations that exist with them. Human racial variation is due to natural selection which is influenced by environment far more then by eugenic design.

Racial variation in our species is very minor and not worth any consideration in regards to whom has a relationship with whom in our species.

Racism is irrational and serves no useful purpose at all.

Racial variation in our species is very minor and not worth any consideration in regards to whom has a relationship with whom in our species.

Certainly in a free society relationships should not be subject to regulation, but free individuals quite obviously, most of the time, end up with partners much like themselves -- and partners are most alike in the most heritable traits (some of which are not at all obvious or consciously considered.)

As stark as the physical differences are between races (e.g. a nontrivial fraction of blacks can't accept organ donations from any white) the psychological differences are more profound.

Racism is irrational and serves no useful purpose at all.

Nature is without purpose, per se. Whether "racism" is irrational depends on the definition of racism.

"the psychological differences are more profound."

I assume you infer that cultural differences and other aspects of people arising from them are because of physiological and biological differences between people.

Myself, I beg to differ and see no substantial difference between people of any significance then those emanating from cultural and historic differences between people.

Interestingly enough to, I find many Negro women very sexy and appealing. I love Caucasian women very much too, but have never understood the mindset that finds others racial groupings repugnant as sexual partners.

I also have had as many or more excellent friends in the nine years I was in the U.S. Army who were Black, and I am lucky to have known them so well.

Since that landmark Loving v. Virginia ruling,

I've always been fond of the particular name of that case because, you know, you love who you love. It could be someone of a different shade of skin, someone of the same gender, someone of a different blood type, someone of a different faith or, yikes, even a republican :)

I think many people are unhappy and maybe even end up crazy because they're taught they can only love people who fall into a particular narrow category that doesn't happen to line up with how they feel in their hearts.

I do believe the world would be a nicer place if we would just quit legislating, preaching and judging love. it's a personal thing.

I assume you infer that cultural differences and other aspects of people arising from them are because of physiological and biological differences between people.

Some of strongest differences might not be. Dress and costuming, for example, serve the purpose of exaggerating underlying differences. But I think probably 60% to 80% of the behavior of individual humans is genetic, and the differences between group averages also have a strong genetic component.

Interestingly enough to, I find many Negro women very sexy and appealing. I love Caucasian women very much too, but have never understood the mindset that finds others racial groupings repugnant as sexual partners.

Well, I wouldn't call an Australian aboriginal a hottie, but I agree. To me, many of the most attractive are mixed. My wife isn't white. :/

Sam Francis thought white nationalism was probably a dead end on this count. White like non-whites, at the very least as laborers and concubines.

I also have had as many or more excellent friends in the nine years I was in the U.S. Army who were Black, and I am lucky to have known them so well.

The army tries to take the best from all groups, and uses intelligence tests.

In the depth of their sorrow, they shall know; That he who held back holds back no longer.

White man is not defending his territory.

Voluntary segregation is a way out of this dilemma. But the darker races do not want this to happen. It's racist, according to them. But I do not see my choice of living conditions to be any of their concern, unless they try to take my liberty, in which case they are all fair game and open season is on the front burner.

Jeremiah 31:27 has something to say about this.

The days are coming, says the LORD, when I will seed the house of Israel and the house of Judah with the seed of man and the seed of beast.

In this instance, Strong's Concordance says, Man means Awdam (in Hebrew) and is ruddy complected and rosy cheeked.

And Genesis 5:1 says this book is the generation of Adam the day he created man in His image and Adam means "rosy cheeked."

For more info on the meaning of "beast of the field" see Jonah 3:8 and you will see these beasts have hands and the violence they commit must be repented. And when Moses went to Sinai, Moses said, "neither the hand of man nor beast shall touch this mountain. They will be stoned; they will be shot; they will be killed.

The word "bastard in Strong's means "of mixed races," meaning mongoloid, negroid and caucasoid. Everyone who is not of one of these three races or is mixed is a bastard.

So, back to Jeremiah, the seed of man and the seed of beast being mixed is really wheat we refer to as miscegenation.

Hell, anyone desiring to move to Israel is required to have a Jewish mother.

Mary was not even Jewish, she was a Levite. But Joseph was a Jew (Judahite).

Try moving to Israel if you mother is not Jewish or try getting parental approval to marry a Jewish woman if you are not Jewish.

And "King of Love" Lerner only dates Ashkenazim.

But hey, if they've been around so long, there's an ecological niche they're filling, right? Like mosquitos, or spotted owls or something.

When will his show be cancelled?

I'm amazed at Rush Limbaugh's popularity. I got sick of him years ago.

Another thing on race, the New York Times had an article last year saying that based on DNA studies, it could've been as recently as six thousand years ago that the Europeans became white.

I've already said too much.

Bankers might have something to do with this, as in "fleecing the goyim."

Bryan Sykes research in mitochondrial DNA led him back to Africa. But I don't know that he found a year when a specific race was born. Human migrations have been going on for centuries. Anyone who breeds animals understands how certain traits can be encouraged.

Native Americans in North and South America originated from Asia, but don't look exactly like Asians, they developed along slightly different lines.

Here's the relevant passage on when Europeans got white skin, from the Times article (Still Evolving, Human Genes Tell New Story):

Dr. Pritchard's list of selected genes also includes five that affect skin color. The selected versions of the genes occur solely in Europeans and are presumably responsible for pale skin. Anthropologists have generally assumed that the first modern humans to arrive in Europe some 45,000 years ago had the dark skin of their African origins, but soon acquired the paler skin needed to admit sunlight for vitamin D synthesis.

The finding of five skin genes selected 6,600 years ago could imply that Europeans acquired their pale skin much more recently. Or, the selected genes may have been a reinforcement of a process established earlier, Dr. Pritchard said.

There's some evidence that evolution happens faster in variable climates. Tropical areas have more species and genetic diversity, but species go extinct more quickly at moderate latitudes.

Well, we did want our MTV, didn't we? (And a big plasma screen to go with it.)
