It was a little late for National Coming Out Day, but a huge revelation nonetheless: Harry Potter author J.K. Rowling revealed Friday night that one of her main characters, Hogwarts Headmaster Albus Dumbledore, is gay.

The Associated Press reports that during a Q&A session with audience members, a young fan asked if Dumbledore finds true love.

"Dumbledore is gay," the author, 42, responded, prompting gasps and applause.

Rowling said Dumbledore was infatuated with rival Gellert Grindelwald, who was later offed in a battle between the good and bad wizards.

"Falling in love can blind us to an extent," Rowling said of Dumbledore's feelings, adding that Dumbledore was "horribly, terribly let down" and that his love was a "great tragedy."

I don't have a problem with a literary character being gay but the teacher character's sexual identity was initially left vague by the author and I don't understand Rowling's reason to "out" the sexual identity of the teacher now almost as an after thought. Is it to deliver a politically correct message? If so, it's silly and unnecessary - there's a wide range of age groups who are Harry Potter fans, and some of the readers are lower elementary school age - do these young kids need to have this PC nonsense foisted on them at such an early age? Can't they be allowed to enjoy their innocence without having adults compelling them to grow up early and deal with sexuality?

Well isn't it funny that the wages of sin is death?

Dumbledore is dead, died in one of the books. So what message does that send folks?

I think it's funny as hell that she's doing this of course posthumously. Had it come out when the books were being made into movies, she might have alienated some of her fans.

Then again... What isn't gay about Harry Potter?

Dying for old bastards, and their old money, isn't my idea of freedom.
