I never heard that hypothesis before. The most compelling reason I can think of would be that killing all 3 Kennedys might have raised more than a few eyebrows.

I don't think it is corrosive effect as much as it is an indicator of the type of people who would volunteer to serve in a military engaged in such a war. Anyone with any sense would steer well clear of service at this point in time.
