Obama's Trip Backfires; McCain Surges to 4-Point Lead in USA Today/Gallup Poll

Monday, July 28, 2008 9:35 PM

A surprising poll released Monday confirms Sen. Barack Obama's worst nightmare: he actually lost ground to Sen. John McCain after a global trip meant to buck up his sagging credentials in foreign and military policy.

The USA Today/Gallup poll has McCain leading Obama by four points, 49 percent to Obama's 45 percent, among likely voters.

Just last month, the same poll had McCain trailing by six points to the neophyte U.S. senator.

Among registered voters, McCain was just three points behind Obama -- a statistical dead heat.

The USA Today/Gallup poll is consistent with the Rasmussen tracking poll, which also shows Obama ahead by just three percentage points -- again a statistical tie.

The polls suggest that Obama's efforts to act like a president abroad -- even though he has yet to be elected -- may have backfired among American voters.

In Berlin, Obama spoke to 200,000 cheering Germans. The Democratic candidate used the foreign platform to express the view that he was a "fellow citizen of the world" and apologized for America's imperfections.

Later, he decided not to visit wounded American soldiers at Landstuhl Regional Medical Center in southern Germany. When the Pentagon informed Obama's campaign that the hospital would be closed to the press and campaign staff -- only the senator and his official staff would be allowed in -- Obama decided to cancel the event.

McCain has been quick to seize on Obama's ill-advised decision to cancel the humanitarian visit to the hospital.

A McCain television commercial released on the Internet this past weekend chided Obama for his callous act.

"And now, he made time to go to the gym, but canceled a visit with wounded troops,” the ad says. “Seems the Pentagon wouldn’t allow him to bring cameras. John McCain is always there for our troops.”

As the selection turns!

Tune in tomorrow for; "will mcCain cancer out" and "will Fobama expose himself in front of reporters". ;-)

Honestly, who gives a rats ass which of these shills signs the executive order to incarcerate America ?

This election is "non-sense" ...

Resolve to serve no more, and you are at once freed. I do not ask that you place hands upon the tyrant to topple him over, but simply that you support him no longer; then you will behold him, like a great Colossus whose pedestal has been pulled away, fall of his own weight and break in pieces.

Yesterday on Alex Jones' show, Lindsey Williams said that he was told "McCain" is big oil's boy !

I don't know what to think about Lindsey William's latest claims that his family was threatened etc., but if the information that he provided yesterday is accurate we're in for some real tough times. He said two huge oil reserves will be opened that will put the arabs out of business and reduce oil prices to $50/barrel.

However, these will be opened in Indonesia and north of Russia (Arctic). The US will not be permitted to drill or produce its own oil and the economy forced to collapse. He says this will occur over the next 12 months.

If the dollar is allowed to collapse (and it appears to be the plan) Americans won't be able to purchase foreign oil unless the currency is changed to something desirable to the oil producers, AND WE DON'T HAVE THE MANUFACTURING BASE TO RECOVER FROM THE COLLAPSE.

Yesterday on Alex Jones' show, Lindsey Williams said that he was told "McCain" is big oil's boy !

Lindsey Williams omitted a few crucial facts to make the news sound more sensational then it was.

Fyi, up until McCain reversed his pro-environmentalist position on off-shore drilling in June, Big Oil gave McCain peanuts. Keep in mind that McCain is a RINO - McCain was more popular with the Sierra Club than with Big Oil up until June 16.

www.washingtonpost.com/wp...7/26/AR2008072601891.html

Some cut and paste:

Oil and gas industry executives and employees donated $1.1 million to McCain last month -- three-quarters of which came after his June 16 speech calling for an end to the ban -- compared with $116,000 in March, $283,000 in April and $208,000 in May.

"The timing was significant," said David Donnelly, the national campaigns director of the Public Campaign Action Fund, a nonpartisan campaign finance reform group that conducted the analysis of McCain's oil industry contributions. "This is a case study of how a candidate can change a policy position in the interest of raising money."

Brian Rogers, a McCain campaign spokesman, said he considers any suggestion that McCain weighed fundraising into his calculation on drilling policy "completely absurd." Rogers noted that oil and gas money in June still accounted for a very small fraction of the $48 million raised by the campaign and by the Republican National Committee through its Victory Fund.

Oil and gas executives have not traditionally been a major source of campaign money for McCain. A breakdown of giving by the Center for Responsive Politics shows the industry falls 12th on a list of top donors, well behind securities firms, lawyers, banks, and real estate and health professionals.

McCain has historically sided against a number of the industry's interests, opposing efforts to open certain public lands to drilling and embracing proposals aimed at tackling global warming well before oil executives were ready to do so.

Charting the political donations of oil executives may be the best way to evaluate the industry's level of interest in a presidential candidate, said Robin West, chairman of PFC Energy, an industry adviser. Unlike other businesses, oil and gas companies do not have a large labor force that can provide a candidate an army of volunteers. And oil and gas concerns are geographically confined, largely in states that are not viewed as central to a presidential election strategy.
