New deal locks down Muschamp

Texas athletic director DeLoss Dodds said Tuesday that Will Muschamp will remain as the Longhorns’ defensive coordinator and will someday succeed Mack Brown as head coach, according to the Austin (Texas) American-Statesman.

Dodds said a new contract that’ll raise Muschamp’s salary to $900,000 has been agreed to in principle. The new deal makes Muschamp the nation’s highest-paid assistant coach, according to the newspaper.

“We want to keep Will Muschamp as our defensive coordinator at the University of Texas,” Dodds said. “We’ve decided to build our future from the inside.”

Here's the rest of the Muschamp story.

The deal obviously is similar to one that Florida State has set up for Bobby Bowden’s successor. The Seminoles brought in Jimbo Fisher as offensive coordinator last December with the intent of having him take over for Bowden. Fisher was given a $600,000 salary.

Whenever Mack does leave it's going to take somebody
super to fill his shoesI see Mack as pretty close to the

Osborn,Switzer brand of coach.

Pelini is going to be better. But Texas will get any player

they want. It does not matter, in the next few year in the
future Big 12 title games it will consistently be Nebraska
vs. Texas and Nebraska vs. Oklahoma.

#5, I hope you're right. I'm getting really tired of these
tigger fans here in KC saying they are now the powers of the

North & are here to stay. Didn't we here similar
comments from KSU & CU fans at one time? :)

I don't understand why schools do this. Wouldn't you want to

cast a net, interview a bunch of candidates, and see who the
best man for the job is? Also, the NCAA needs some sort of
Rooney Rule in place. There's how many minority coaches at
FBS schools now? Like four? (not counting Willingham and
Prince, who are gone at the end of the season.) Just
ridiculous.

been close to being a super coach.

Interesting thoughts on minority coaches. I light of a

"minority" president-elect, lets let the minority crap die.
America has shown the racism we wants lived with has all but
died. Universities should continue to be able to interview
whomever they desire and hire whomever they want. It should
have NOTHING to do with race. May the best person get the
job. If you want to use the race card on coaches...two of
the four minority coaches do NOT appear to be the best at
their school or maybe any school. Willingham has not done
well at a couple of places now and Prince did not do well at

KSU. It has nothing to do with race as to why they didn't
or aren't doing well. So lets not continue to pound that
"dead" rock.

He's been the DC for less than one year, and they're already
naming him the heir to Mack Brown?

Texas doesn't need to name an heir. As soon as Mack retires,
they can get anyone in the country that they want.

Universities can still interview and hire whomever they
want. Just add a minority candidate. That's all the Rooney
Rule requires, and that's all I'm saying. Give qualified
candidates a fair shake. Just because we have a black
president doesn't mean that profiling (racial, sex, age,
etc.) is going away any time soon.

Plus, Texas should WANT to interview a lot of people. Who's
to say whenever Mack retires that Muschamp will be the best

for the job? Texas is an attractive position and they can
get whomever they want. It's just stupid to hand the job to
somebody without interviewing a lot of capable candidates.

A lot can happen in 8 years, and contracts really don't mean
all that much anymore. The buyout clause seems to be more

important than the contract itself (ie Nebraska, W
Virginia).

I think Macs got a least 5 more years left, so maybe their
just telling MusCHUMP what he wants to hear until then.

I'm sorry, but the minority rule is complete bogus. Let's
say there is a new football team, Team A, who is looking to
hire a new coach. Your five candidates are Bo Pelini, Mack
Brown, Pete Carroll, Bob Stoops, and (for the hell of it)
Tom Osborne. You then apply the Rooney Rule, kick out Bob
Stoops, and bring in the likes of Ron Prince (for example)?

Just to make things fair?

Come on. Not only is Ron Prince less qualified than any of
those 5 coaches listed above, by bringing in a minority to
"make things equal" you end up hurting the team's chances
more.

Nothing, and I mean nothing, should depend on race, but
instead talent and ability.

Other than that little quip, I think it's nice that they are
working from the inside. It is something Nebraska has
traditionally done with great success, but I think the
payment and the term length is a little to far.

So you're saying you'd be mad that you didn't get to hire

Bob Stoops, even though you got to choose from Mack Brown,
Bo Pelini, Pete Carroll and Tom Osborne? And who says you
have to kick out Bob Stoops? Call Ron Prince on the phone;
if he doesn't impress you, don't bring him in for a formal
interview. But at least you took the time and the effort and
gave him a real interview. It's easy for white people to say
that nothing should depend on race (and I used to be one of
those people, so it's not like I'm some tree-hugging,
everybody-should-love-everybody hippie spouting off).

Of course, I've veered slightly off the topic of the "Life
in the Red" blog, so I'll correct myself by saying I would
love to see a Nebraska-Iowa matchup in the Sun Bowl. Why
don't we play them more often, being state neighbors and
all?

What percentage of the players are minorities? And what

percentage of coaches are minorities? If you don't see a
problem here.... You MAY be a redneck!

You MAY be a redneck!....or you MAY be a dumb ass! If we
are going to stoop to name calling Nor, that really hurts
the point some might be TRYING to make. Again, the "race

card" is crap. People who keep bringing it up...got to
interview someone that doesn't have a chance just so it
looks good or meets some rule may be the true racist.

I wanna first say that I am not a racist person, BUT I'm
tired of people playin this race card all the time... You

want more black folks coaching the game, WELL maybe I want
more white people playing the game, Once again I don't feel
this way, I want to see the best players play regardless of
color, BUT if I was to say that it would be a racist
comment, BUT people can play the race card on the other end
all they want!! It ridiculous and you SHOULD go both ways
but it don't... Minority candidates get their fair shake, I
just wish people would quit acting like they don't....Its
embarassing for all who try to play the race card.. This is

2008, lets get current and get over it!!!
