A former military adviser to President Bill Clinton and to Lt. Gov. John Garamendi pleaded guilty Monday to possessing child pornography on his computer.
Wade Sanders, also a decorated Vietnam War veteran, admitted in federal court he had more than 600 sexual images of minors and a 21-minute sex video on his computer depicting prepubescent girls, according to the U.S. attorney's office.
Sanders, 67, served as deputy assistant secretary of the Navy under President Clinton. He was also Garamendi's senior adviser for veterans and military affairs, and resigned the post one day after his Nov. 7 arrest, said Beth Willon, a spokeswoman for Garamendi.
"This type of behavior will not be tolerated in this office," Willon said.
Sanders received the Bronze Star, Silver Star and Purple Heart for service as a swift-boat captain in the Vietnam War. He is scheduled to be sentenced March 30. The maximum penalty is 10 years in prison and a $250,000 fine.
A phone line listed under a 67-year-old Wade Sanders in Sacramento was disconnected. Efforts to locate an attorney for Sanders were not immediately successful Monday night.
