Every time I turn my computer on it starts downloading Microsoft updates. Every time. My computer is as slow as dialup for ten minutes until they're downloaded.

Change the setting and turn the automatic download off.

The tipoff about Windows is the message you get when your computer boots up: "Welcome."

What the hell does "welcome" mean? It means that you're entering somebody else's house.

It's a subtle reminder that your machine is no longer your own.

There is an answer for your problem--it is called Linux. PCLINUXOS is really good. And it is fast too. You cand do updates from the repository and just have the upload running in the background and as far as I can tell it doesn´t slow it down any.

The perfect DVD combo:
Ron Paul Intro., Freedom to Fascism, Keep and Bear Arms, Zeitgeist II & III.
All four, on one DVD, for a dollar.

Or you can d/l a XP/Vista that has the "needed" updates already installed.. ;-) then turn off their crap updates. And most times, you will find, all the known issues with that OS, have been taken care of, by the builder.
