He would have gained a few hundred thousand dollars, or at least not had to spend it (and it was probably someone else's so he really didn't care) if he would have simply produced the actual birth certificate. The Oxford English Dictionary lists it as being defined that since the 16th century. It didn't actually list it in 1790s because like you said it didn't exist.
