The great Kentucky flintlock-hunting rifle was more accurate than any known previous firearm and soon became famous. The history of Tennessee, Kentucky, and certainly the history of the United States, are each very much connected with the history of the Kentucky Long Rifle. This rifle is also known as the Kentucky, the hog rifle, or the long rifle. It was designed to be light, slender and graceful, and was the first truly American firearm. Created in the 1730s in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, by skillful immigrant craftsmen from Germany and Switzerland, the Kentucky rifle was the supreme implement created as a state of the art, ultimately for over a century, until the coming of the "cap and ...

It Won't Stay in Vegas: The Metro PD's Homeland Security Theater

The Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department has an acute public relations problem: Officers in its employ routinely murder and mutilate innocent people. The established review procedure for police killings is at least as predictable as a Zimbabwean presidential election. Former Nevada District Court Judge Don Chairez, has described the Clark County Coroner’s inquest process as “a search for justification of an officer’s actions.” Since the procedure was introduced in 1969, hundreds of lethal force incidents have been reviewed by a seven-member jury. Between 1976 and 2012, only one police shooting was ruled “negligent” – and that decision was overturned ...

The Fighter Mafia

Of Oodle-oops and Error I recently found in The American Conservative a piece called Forty Years of the Fighter Mafia, this mafia being a subset of the “Military Reformers,” who have insisted for many years that weaponry used by the Pentagon “doesn´t work” because it is too complex. They additionally were the people who brought you the imaginary $600 toilet seat, $17 bolt (if memory serves) and the $5000 coffee pot (or some such amount). I had the dismal duty of covering them in the Eighties in Washington. It was an eye-opening display of how easy it is to manipulate a gullible press. Their song was, and is, that America needed simple, robust, reliable weaponry ...

The Pine Bluff PD: From Merely Dysfnctional to Downright Deadly

No tactical genius is necessary to bring about a bloodless end to a standoff involving a 107-year-old man armed with a handgun and surrounded by police officers inside an otherwise vacant house. All that is necessary is a willingness on the part of the officers to accept a minimal amount of risk, and a time horizon longer than a half hour. In fact, only someone with a perverse appetite for gratuitous bloodshed could arrange to end that confrontation with the violent death of the centenarian suspect. As it happens, the valiant men of the Pine Bluff, Arkansas Police Department’s SWAT team were equal to that task. That’s why 107-year-old Monroe Isadore was killed in a torrent of ...

After eluding the police for more than a week, Alejandro Gonzalez surrendered in San Jose on January 10, 2011. The 22-year-old was the suspect in a non-fatal shooting that had taken place on New Year’s Day at a local bar called the Mucky Duck. As should be expected, the police had done nothing useful to solve that crime. Their only contribution to the case was to stage a lethal SWAT raid against a man who had been nowhere near the bar when the shooting took place, and had nothing to do with it. Four days after the Mucky Duck shooting – in which three people suffered non- life-threatening injuries — a multi-agency SWAT team invaded the home of 31- year-old Rogelio Serrato, ...

Antiviral Enzyme Contributes to Several Forms of Cancer

TEHRAN (FNA)- Researchers at the University of Minnesota have discovered that a human antiviral enzyme causes DNA mutations that lead to several forms of cancer. The discovery, reported in the July 14 issue of Nature Genetics, follows the team's earlier finding that the enzyme, called APOBEC3B, is responsible for more than half of breast cancer cases. The previous study was published in Nature in February. APOBEC3B is part of a family of antiviral proteins that Harris has studied for more than a decade. His effort to understand how these proteins work has led to these surprising discoveries that APOBEC3B is a broadly important cancer mutagen. "We are very excited about this ...

Three Navy football players to be charged with rape

An alleged sexual assault last year will leave the playing careers — and freedom — of two Navy football players very much up in the air. In a statement Monday afternoon, the U.S. Naval Academy announced that three unnamed Navy current and former football players will be charged with rape. The military academy’s superintendent, Michael Miller, “has chosen to send the case to Article 32 proceedings” wrote Military.com. An official charge sheet has yet to be completed, which is why the names of the three suspects have not been released. Two of the suspects are current Navy football players, while the third was set to graduate in May but was denied the opportunity ...

Walt Arfons, the creator of the jet funny car, a world land speed record holder, pioneer in drag racing both piston and thrust powered vehicles, mechanical genius, and half brother of Art Arfons has passed away at the age of 96 years in Ohio. Arfons was born in 1916 and through the joining of two families gained a younger (by 10 years) brother who shared his interest, passion, and talent with mechanical things. As the two grew up working at the family grain and feed mill, they became ever more curious about machines, tractors, and anything else that made noise and operated under its own power. In the early 1950s the guys were working together on all kinds of interesting stuff like home ...

Some Encouraging Contrasts

One of my daughters has a very nice photograph of a tiny flower growing in the crack of a large slab of lifeless, stifling asphalt. The image of life seeking and finding even the most limited setting in which to flourish, should foster a sense of optimism as to the future. Political systems resort to the most savage forms of violence because their adversary is not "terrorism" or some other contrived bogeyman, but life itself. Life expresses itself in individualized, spontaneous, self-directed behavior. By contrast, political systems – all of which are grounded in collectivism – demand the uniform, standardized, lockstep conduct of fungible men and women; what the ...

As an ambulance took the seriously wounded Dzhokar Tsarnaev to a hospital, people in Watertown, Massachusetts, realized that the police hunt was over and they cheered. And cheered. Some in the crowd began to chant, "USA! USA! USA!" as though an American team had won an Olympic competition. To the relieved residents who finally could go back to something normal after effectively living a day under martial law, Gov. Deval Patrick issuing a "shelter-in-place" order, the police had been heroes, protecting them from two mad bombers who already had struck the venerable Boston Marathon and were promising more mayhem and murder: "Every time a police car passed by, the ...

Lisa McHale wishes her husband had lived long enough to learn more about the links between concussions and long-term brain injuries. Her husband Tom, an All-Ivy athlete who played in 87 NFL games from 1987 to 1995, died of an overdose in 2008 after battling depression and a painkiller addiction. An autopsy later showed he suffered from traumatic brain injuries. But she said it helps that more players now go public with their neurological problems, including some of the thousands now suing the NFL over concussions. "To know it wasn't his fault, that there was something going on neurologically, it helps," McHale said in Philadelphia on Tuesday, where lawyers for the NFL and ...

Nearly two years ago, Tia Norfleet told Sporting News that she was working toward becoming the first female African-American driver in NASCAR and hoping to pave the way for other African-American drivers to enter the sport. Since then, she’s been promoting herself as an accomplished driver working her way through the NASCAR ranks and claims that she plans to race in the NASCAR Nationwide Series this year. But, according to a report in The New York Times, much of what Norfleet has been promoting is not true. According to a March 6 story in The New York Times, Norfleet is not licensed to compete in NASCAR and has drawn the ire of NASCAR officials for the way she has been promoting ...

You know the score… You’re not a cop, you’re little people! LAPD Captain Harry Bryant to retired "Blade Runner" Rick Deckard, who was reluctant to resume his career as a state-licensed killer. No more hesitation – Little boy with real gun Barack Obama’s advertised purpose in visiting Minneapolis on February 4 was to combat the scourge of gun violence. The substantive purpose of his visit was to promote a state monopoly on gun violence, exercised by people who are trained and authorized to kill pregnant women, children, and the elderly. It would take about fifteen minutes – assuming that the traffic is favorable – to drive from the Special ...

Gabrielle Giffords, the "surprise witness" at the January 30 Senate hearing on gun violence, was among thirteen people attacked by a deranged gunman in the parking lot of a Safeway in Tucson two years ago. Vanessa Guerena, another Tucson resident whose husband was murdered in an act of gun-related criminal violence in their living room about four months later, was not given an opportunity to address the Senate panel. That’s because her husband’s killers – who remain at large – committed that crime under the color of state "authority." Guerena, a former Marine and Iraq combat veteran, was gunned down by a Pima County SWAT team who committed an ...
