VIPR Searches and the American Citizen: ‘Dominate. Intimidate. Control.’ By John W. Whitehead The transition to a police state will not come about with a dramatic coup d’etat, with battering rams and marauding militia. As we have experienced first-hand in recent years, it will creep in softly, one violation at a time, until suddenly you find yourself being subjected to random patdowns and security sweeps during your morning commute to work or quick trip to the shopping mall. Perhaps you have yet to experience the particular thrill, and I use that word loosely, of being manhandled by government agents, having your personal possessions pawed through, and your activities and ...

Texas executes Mexican after court stay rejected By MICHAEL GRACZYK HUNTSVILLE, Texas (AP) -- Texas executed a Mexican citizen Thursday for the rape-slaying of a teenager after he and the White House pleaded in vain for a Supreme Court stay, saying he was denied help from his home country that could have helped him avoid the death penalty. In his last minutes, Humberto Leal repeatedly said he was sorry and accepted responsibility. "I have hurt a lot of people. ... I take full blame for everything. I am sorry for what I did," he said in the death chamber. "One more thing," he said as the drugs began taking effect. Then he shouted twice, "Viva Mexico!" ...

Centuries before William James coined the phrase, men have sought a "moral equivalent of war," some human endeavor to satisfy the jingoistic lust of man, without the carnage of war. For some, the modern Olympic Games have served the purpose, with the Cold War rivalry for medals between the United States and the Soviet Union, and, lately, between America and China. But the Olympic Games, most of which involve individual athletes competing against each other, have never aroused the passions of soccer, where teams serve as surrogates for the tribe or nation. Perhaps the most intense rivalry today is between Real Madrid and F.C. Barcelona, teams representing Spain's largest ...

Attacks on commuters and bicyclists have become violent, and police have stepped up patrols. Poster Comment:Walgreens ...

SWAT Team Mania: The War Against the American Citizen

"He [a federal agent] had his knee on my back and I had no idea why they were there." ~ Anthony Wright, victim of a Dept. of Education SWAT team raid The militarization of American police – no doubt a blowback effect of the military empire – has become an unfortunate part of American life. In fact, it says something about our reliance on the military that federal agencies having nothing whatsoever to do with national defense now see the need for their own paramilitary units. Among those federal agencies laying claim to their own law enforcement divisions are the State Department, Department of Education, Department of Energy, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, and the ...

Tripoli : Smoke billows from the site of an explosion across an area in which strongman Moamer Kadhafi has his residence, in Tripoli. (AFP PHOTO/STR ) NATO is deliberately targeting Libyan leader Colonel Muammar Gaddafi, media reports have quoted a senior military alliance official as saying. Previously NATO had said that it did not target individuals in its military campaign in Libya. The alliance official says the UN resolution justifies the action, because as head of the military, Gaddafi is an essential part of the command structure. This comes as fresh air strikes sent plumes of smoke over the Libyan leader's compound and nearby military barracks. But the Libyan army has ...

John Elway Sounds A Sour Note About Band With Same Name By Max Thompson May 27, 2011 With the NFL lockout in full swing, John Elway must really be bored. Somehow Elway -- the Denver Broncos vice president and Hall-of-Fame quarterback -- became aware of the Fort Collins, Colo., punk band "Elway," and decided he's just not cool with the group using his surname. The Broncos legend’s lawyer has requested that the band change its name, but stopped short of suing or issuing a cease and desist order. The band, to its credit, was mostly amused. In a statement released via punknews.org, the band acknowledged the letter and suggested Elway had better things to do in the wake ...

On Patriotism

Patriotism is everywhere thought to be a virtue rather than a mental disorder. I don’t get it. If I told the Rotarians or an American Legion hall that “John is a patriot,” all would approve greatly of John. If I told them that patriotism was nothing more than the loyalty to each other of dogs in a pack, they would lynch me. Patriotism, they believe, is a Good Thing. Of course the Japanese pilots who attacked Pearl Harbor were patriots, as were the German soldiers who murdered millions in the Second World War. The men who brought down the towers in New York were patriots, though of a religious sort. Do we admire their patriotism? Of course not. When we say “John is a ...

The Mall of America’s unusual tribute to Harmon Killebrew

The United States is littered with landmarks designating the spots where great ballparks used to stand and great players used to play. That said, the Mall of America's standing tribute to Hall of Fame member Harmon Killebrew — who passed away from cancer Tuesday morning at age 74 — is arguably the most unique of the bunch. The red seat you see on the right side of the above photo commemorates the 522-foot homer that Killebrew hit off the Angels' Lew Burdette on June 3, 1967. Though it now overlooks the "Log Chute" ride at Mall of America's amusement park, the chair is said to be mounted at the spot where Killebrew's homer landed in the second deck of ...

Post-Rapture Looting, Anyone? Lest you've been comatose for the last month or so, let's fill you in on the biggest news story of the last —oh— two thousand years: The Rapture is coming. Like, Saturday. The saved will ascend to heaven, the graves will unleash their dead, and the rest of us will be left to walk among corpses and zombies. Sounds like an opportune moment for a little looting, right? So thought Ben Conner and Carl W Franke, organizers of a post-rapture looting party that's already gotten major traction on Facebook, with more than 125,000 attendees, to date. To quote the organizers: "When everyone is gone and god's not looking, we need to pick ...

"Mom, was my dad a bad guy?" four-year-old Joel Guerena plaintively asked his mother Vanessa after her husband, 26-year-old Jose, was killed in a withering barrage of gunfire during a SWAT invasion of their home. "They killed my dad! Police killed my dad! Why? What did my dad do?" To the extent the question posed by that traumatized child dealt with a moral justification for the killing, a good and sufficient answer would be: "Nothing." Jose Guerena was killed because he had the temerity to defend his family from a criminal assault carried out by armed strangers. When the stormtroopers arrived shortly after 9:00 a.m. on May 5, Jose had just surrendered to ...

Cash-Strapped NFL Players Seeking High-Risk "Lockout Loans"
Post Date: 2011-04-15 15:50:24 by X-15

As the NFL lockout enters its second month, players from at least 16 teams have already sought out extremely aggressive short-term loans with high interest rates, ThePostGame.com has learned. According to a financing source, these interest rates range from 18 percent to 24 percent, and upon default, they can rise as high as 36 percent. All of this comes as the NFL Players Association announced nearly two weeks ago it would begin payouts from its war chest -- a lockout fund designed to help keep players afloat during the work stoppage. But while that lifeline was created in part to keep opportunistic lenders at bay, the finances offered by the NFLPA -- as much as $60,000 for some players ...
