MADE IN AMERICA

MADE IN AMERICA Bill Belichick is ruthless, demanding, and divisive - no wonder he ticks off everyone outside of New England. But the man on the Pats' sideline is carrying on a star-spangled tradition that stretches back more than 100 years. Updated: January 25, 2008, 5:10 PM ET - by Tom Farrey WHY IS BILL BELICHICK SUCH A COMPLETE JERK? Unless you live in New England, you may have pondered this question in 2007. It's not just the piling up of wins before ever-larger audiences that engenders so much loathing. It's the way he wins. It's Spygate. It's those surly postgame handshakes. The running up of scores. The jones for retribution against all perceived enemies. ...

Butt Out of Baseball

The U.S. Congress should butt out of baseball. Whether players use or have used steroids or other performance-enhancing drugs is a matter for the players, the owners and the fans to settle. It does not concern the federal government. One reason Congress is so inefficient and ineffective is that it wanders off the reservation too often, wasting time on topics and matters that the Constitution gives it no authority to mess with. Rep. Henry Waxman, D-Calif., chairman of the House Oversight Committee, which recently held hearings on the topic, unfortunately is not only ignorant and/or disdainful of the Constitution, but seems to be a congenital busybody. Baseball is a game, and in the case of ...

10-23-7 Recently, I said "we'll be fighting in the streets for food long before we're buried in ice." I say the same thing in my book Not by Fire but by Ice. I just received an email from a reader that sums it up better than I did... "I spent about thirty years working in commercial agribusiness. My main job was to purchase ingredients, mainly grain, for flour mills and animal feed mills. As a part of my job, I was forced to understand the US food supply system, its strengths and weaknesses. Over the years, I became aware of some things that nearly all Americans are completely unaware of. I am going to make a list of statements and then you will see where ...

The U.S. chess Grandmaster Bobby Fisher died at age 64 of an unknown illness, the national radio station in Iceland reported on Friday. Fisher moved to Iceland in 2005 and later obtained his citizenship, after the U.S. authorities pursued in arresting him mainly for violating President George H. W. Bush’s executive order in 1992 of not engaging in economic activities with Yugoslavia (Fisher chose to play against Spassky, despite the order). The former world chess champion was pronounced dead on Thursday, at a Reykjavik hospital, but no further details have been released to the press. Fisher was the first and only U.S.-born champion, in a sport where the Soviets always had the lead. ...

NFL Odds - Patriots vs. Giants ( will the Giants be spoilers tonight?)

Thank you, NFL commissioner Roger Goodell. He's the one who ultimately decided to put the historic Patriots-Giants game on national TV for American viewers when it appeared much of the country would be shut out when it was only on the NFL Network. So will we see history? The Patriots go for 16-0, but is that worth risking a big injury for the playoffs? The Giants are locked into the No. 5 seed in the NFC as a wild card and literally have nothing to play for - other than momentum. New England is a 13.5-point favorite on WagerWeb.com (over/under of 46.5). If you believe both coaches, the starters will play this week, which is as it should be with history on the line. "Our ...

This short survey will tell you approximately how many five year old children you could fight at once. Results are based on physical prowess, training, swarm-combatting experience, and the flexibility of your moral compass. Here are the ground rules: * You are in an enclosed area roughly the size of a basketball court * There are no weapons or foreign objects * Everyone is wearing a cup (so no kicks to the groin) * The children are merciless and will show no fear * If a child is knocked unconscious, he is "out." The same goes for you. Click for Full Text!

NFL to put team in Toronto? CFL commish not happy about potential expansion TORONTO (AP) -- CFL commissioner Mark Cohon believes all signs point to an NFL team being placed in Toronto. It's the first time the league has taken such a definitive stance on the subject. "All of the tea leaves are indicating that it's shifting," Cohon said Friday. "You have guys like Ted Rogers and Larry Tanenbaum and Phil Lind, very powerful Canadians who are interested; you have an owner in Ralph Wilson in Buffalo who has said, `When I die, my estate will sell the franchise'; you have the Bills interested in marking Toronto as part of their territory, which I believe is ...

Red Sox open World Series with rout Ronald Blum Associated Press Oct. 24, 2007 10:27 PM BOSTON - Josh Beckett, Dustin Pedroia and the Boston Red Sox were revved up and ready. Not so the Colorado Rockies, who lurched into Beantown with all the zip of a creaky old stagecoach. Back in the World Series with no Bambino's curse to worry about, the Red Sox flattened the Rockies 13-1 in Wednesday night's opener. Beckett got off to the most overpowering start since Sandy Koufax, Pedroia became only the second player to lead off the Series with a home run, and then a relentless offense led by Manny Ramirez and David Ortiz racked up hit after hit. "Not sure what the final score ...

Once the Paper of Record, the Newspaper Now has Investors Bailing. Why? Boom! And down goes the biggest newspaper name of all. As you may have read, yesterday brokerage giant Morgan Stanley dumped its entire stake -- $183 million worth -- in the New York Times, in which it was the second largest shareholder. Not surprisingly, Times stock immediately slumped, bottoming at a nearly 3 percent drop to $18.28 -- the lowest it has been in a decade. The actual damage is probably even larger than that. The Morgan Stanley sell-off has been expected for some time now. Ever since April, after Hassam Elmasry, managing director of Morgan's Investment Management Group failed in his attempt to ...
