Codex Gigas (the Devil’s Bible) - the largest manuscript in the world
Post Date: 2015-06-18 08:39:07 by Ada

Codex Gigas, otherwise known as ‘the Devil’s Bible’ is the largest and probably one of the strangest manuscripts in the world. It is so large that it is said to have taken more than 160 animal skins to make it and takes at least two people to lift it. It measures approximately 1 metre in length. According to legend, the medieval manuscript was made out of a pact with the ‘devil’, which is why it is sometimes referred to as the Devil’s Bible. It was written in Latin during the 13th century AD, and although the origin of the manuscript is unknown, a note in the manuscript states that it was pawned in the monastery at Sedlec in 1295. A Cleveland-based grocery chain has yanked a popular beer after one too many customers complained about its name: Sweet Baby Jesus. The chocolate and peanut butter porter, released two years ago by Baltimore-based DuClaw Brewing Co., started selling in Ohio just two months ago. But now, after hearing from customers who said they were offended by its name, Heinen’s Grocery Store, which has 22 locations in Ohio and Illinois, has pulled it from its shelves, the Baltimore Business Journal reports. Sweet Baby Jesus accounts for about 35 to 40 percent of DuClaw’s total sales, making it the brewery’s most popular beer. “When you push boundaries and try to get one group ...

“It is perfectly possible for a man to be out of prison and yet not free—to be under no physical constraint and yet be a psychological captive, compelled to think, feel and act as the representatives of the national state, or of some private interest within the nation wants him to think, feel and act. . . . To him the walls of his prison are invisible and he believes himself to be free.”—Aldous Huxley, A Brave New World Revisited “Free worlders” is prison slang for those who are not incarcerated behind prison walls. Supposedly, those fortunate souls live in the “free world.” However, appearances can be deceiving. “As I got closer to retiring ...

You Won’t Believe What This Marine Was Court-Martialed For

You Won’t Believe What This Marine Was Court-Martialed For 1st Amendment In yet another example of political correctness gone crazy, a US Marine was convicted at a court-martial for refusing to remove a Bible verse on her computer. It was a verse of scripture the military determined “could easily be seen as contrary to good order and discipline.” The plight of Lance Corporal Monifa Sterling seems unbelievable – a member of the Armed Forces criminally prosecuted for displaying a slightly altered passage of Scripture from the Old Testament: “No weapon formed against me shall prosper.” Sterling, who represented herself at trial, was convicted February 1, 20 ...

North Carolina lawmakers Thursday overturned Gov. Pat McCrory’s veto  of a measure that would allow magistrates to not issue marriage licenses to same-sex couples if they have moral objections. googletag.cmd.push(function() { googletag.display('div-gpt-ad-story160LeftSide'); }); The state House voted 69-41 to reject the veto and turn the Religious Freedom Bill into law. The state Senate had voted a week ago to overturn McCrory’s veto. North Carolina joins Utah as the only states to implement protections for officials with religious objections to same-sex “marriage.” Liberty Counsel, which had filed a lawsuit over the issue, said it would voluntarily ...

The Biggest Scam of All: Pastor Creflo Dollar Will Get His $65 Million Luxury Jet Posted: 06/05/2015 5:15 pm EDT Updated: 06/05/2015 5:59 pm EDT You may have heard the story a few months ago about an Atlanta-based minister who claimed he needed a $65 million private jet so he could "safely and swiftly share the Good News of the Gospel worldwide." But almost as quickly as Pastor Creflo Dollar asked his 200,000 followers to each donate $300.00 towards the purchase of a luxurious jet, the campaign vanished and was removed from his website. But now, the board of World Changers Church International -- which also operates as Creflo Dollar Ministries, has announced it is ready to ...

Gohmert: ‘If There’s a God…There’ll be Price to This Nation For Acting in Such a Way’ By CNSNews.com Staff | June 5, 2015 | 2:39 PM EDT Rep. Louie Gohmert (R.-Texas)(CNSNews.com) - Rep. Louie Gohmert (R.-Texas) said on the floor of the U.S. House of Representatives yesterday that God may make the United States pay a price because, Gohmert said, the Obama administration has been telling people in Africa it will help them counter radical Islam but only if they abandon their Christian views on abortion and same-sex marriage.“Only if you will violate your Christian beliefs will we be willing to come help you,” Gohmert said, summarizing his ...

The darker side of Buddhism

The principle of non-violence is central to Buddhist teachings, but in Sri Lanka some Buddhist monks are being accused of stirring up hostility towards other faiths and ethnic minorities. Their hard line is causing increasing concern. The small temple in the suburbs of Colombo is quiet. An image of the Buddha is surrounded with purple and white lotus flowers. Smaller Buddhas line the walls. But upstairs, a burly monk in a bright orange robe holds forth - for this is one of the main offices of a hard-line Buddhist organisation, the Bodu Bala Sena or Buddhist Power Force (BBS). The peaceful precepts for which Buddhism is widely known barely figure in his words. Instead, the monk, Galagoda ...

As old-line Southern Baptist churches struggle, a dying one has an epiphany

Attendance at the Southern Baptist church on Scenic Drive had dwindled to about 15 most Sundays. The potted plant by the pulpit was from yet another member’s funeral. There was $5,000 in the church bank account and $6,000 in bills when Larry Montgomery, a deacon, reached a conclusion once unthinkable in the heart of the Bible Belt. “We’re just not going to make it,” he announced to the members of Scenic Drive Baptist, and then he told them he might have found a solution. There was another congregation, he said, a small one that had been meeting in living rooms and whose pastor carried business cards that quoted from John 4:35: “Look at the fields! They are ripe ...

Lima, Peru, May 27, 2015 / 04:14 pm (CNA/EWTN News).- A game that purports to invoke a Mexican demon – known as “Charlie, Charlie” and considered to be a simplified version of the Ouija board – has gone viral on social media among young people, prompting one exorcist to warn of its dangers. The game, which has gained significant traction online in recent days, involves a pair of pencils or pens, a sheet of paper, and the invocation of a spirit named “Charlie.” Scores of short video clips, posted mostly by teens, show players shrieking and running out of view when the pencil apparently moves on its own and points to a “yes” or a “no” ...

A Visalia prayer breakfast meant to bring encouragement and peace to the community has instead stirred up a potential lawsuit against Tulare County Sheriff Mike Boudreaux for alleged discrimination and harassment. The complaint has upset people from as far away as Washington, D.C. According to Marguerite Melo, an attorney for the Law Offices of Melo and Sarsfield LLP of Visalia, she submitted a complaint on behalf of five clients who were offended the sheriff attended the religious event in full uniform, along with a few deputies, ...

Political Correctness: Tyranny Of The Mind

In a letter to Dr. Benjamin Rush, dated September 23, 1800, Thomas Jefferson wrote, “I have sworn upon the altar of God, eternal hostility against every form of tyranny over the mind of man.” By any definition that Jefferson could have envisioned, today’s political correctness can only be regarded as “tyranny over the mind of man.” Forget freedom of association, freedom of expression, freedom of speech, or freedom of privacy, political correctness demands that we don’t even have freedom of thought or opinion. If one does not have the freedom to live in good conscience with his own sense of morality, he or she is indeed the most enslaved of creatures. Listen ...

Fourth New York Jewish baby this year treated for herpes after controversial Orthodox circumcision method

A fourth baby has contracted herpes in New York this year following a controversial circumcision called metzizah b'peh, a ritual in the ultra-Orthodox Jewish community in which the baby's genitals come in contact with the mouth of the man performing the service. According to the NYC Department of Health, the baby was born in November and showed signs of herpes infection on the penis shortly after being circumcised. The method of circumcision in question ends with the man who performs the ceremony, called a mohel, sucking blood from the baby's foreskin to stop the bleeding. Click for Full Text!

Texas OKs Full Marijuana Legalization Bill

A proposal seeking full legalization of marijuana on religious grounds has cleared an unlikely legislative hurdle. Republican state Rep. David Simpson of Longview argues marijuana comes from God and therefore shouldn’t be banned by government. The tea party stalwart has repeatedly championed what he calls the “Christian case” for legalization. Simpson’s bill (HB 2165) languished for weeks before the House Criminal Jurisprudence Committee. Three committee Democrats and two Republicans surprisingly voted to support it Wednesday, though, and it passed 5-2. That makes Simpson’s bill eligible for consideration to reach the House floor before the legislative session ...

Madison Passes Law Protecting Atheists

Sputnik... If the law can protect citizens from being discriminated based on their religious beliefs, why can’t a law protect people from being discriminated for having no religious beliefs? That question led Anita Weier of the City Council of Madison, Wisconsin, to author legislation which recently got passed. The city of Madison banned discrimination against non-religious citizens on April 1 – this is not an April Fool’s joke. "It just seems to me that religion has spread into government more than I feel comfortable with," said Councilwoman Anita Weier, who left the council after the statute passed. "It just occurred to me that religion was protected, so ...

TAMERLAN TSARNAEV’S PATH TO EXTREMISM INTERTWINED WITH FBI CONTACTS

Magomed Kartashov hadn’t seen his American cousin since their childhood. So when Tamerlan Tsarnaev came home to the Russian Republic of Dagestan on a 2012 visit, Kartashov, his second cousin, was taken aback by Tamerlan’s massive physical stature, and his overwhelming desire to wage “jihad” in his country of birth. “He came to Russia thinking he would find jihad in the streets,” Kartashov told FBI investigators in a 2013 interview conducted in the aftermath of the bombing. “He did not seem to really understand things, he just watched a lot of videos on the Internet.” Kartashov’s interview with the FBI was entered into testimony today in court, ...

The Pope Rebukes Turkey—and Should Challenge America and Israel

The pontiff recognizes the Armenian genocide of a century ago, but can he do more about today's wars and injustices? Last week Pope Francis described the slaughter of Armenians by the Ottoman Empire as “genocide,” joining France and 20 other countries in adopting that designation. The massacres and forced relocations of Armenian civilians began 100 years ago and concluded with the end of the First World War in 1918. Even Turkey’s German military advisers were appalled by what they were witnessing. Turkish historians have tended to argue that the deaths were consequences of the war itself, in which Imperial Russian armies overran predominantly Armenian regions in Eastern ...

MANY CHRISTIANS ARE LEAVING THE MILITARY DUE TO HOSTILE WORK ENVIRONMENT

I often find myself fascinated by how mainstream Christians are so enamored with the military I often find myself fascinated by how mainstream Christians are so enamored with the military. Every Veterans Day they proudly display their uniformed converts in church and pray for our soldiers overseas, in their battle against Islamic extremists. They have a habit of adorning their place of worship with American flags, preaching the supposed pro-government virtues of Romans 13, and supporting just about any war that involves the Middle East regardless of the morality of these conflicts. I don’t want to lump all Christians together, but this is just my observation. It’s kind of ...

We're all told that we should love equality, yet it's clear some love it more than others. That’s an obvious fact for most observers, but the real question is then: who are the real egalitarians? Could it be those who view all men as one and the same, all just individuals living here on God’s green earth, all created by the maker in his own image? If we’re all endowed with a soul at birth, shouldn’t we strive for equality in life? This is the question that might be guiding the Southern Baptist Convention’s new thinking on race. The SBC, as I previously noted, is now working for something called “race reconciliation” and The Atlantic just ...

I RECANT. I'm using this Facebook post to make a couple of personal confessions. In one way or another, we are all victims of our past. I was schooled in certain persuasions that have taken 3/4 of a lifetime to overcome. But when I made a conscious decision to pursue and follow truth--no matter where it led me--many years ago, my mind and heart have been liberated with the illumination of truth time and time again. I personally believe that only people who, in their hearts, are sincerely open to truth will ever find it. I will not make these issues a test of fellowship with those who disagree with me (although, I'm sure many of them will). I, myself, believed differently for all ...
