A Dutch cat has managed to survive for nearly two months locked in an abandoned house. The extremely malnourished animal, who had to resort to eating paper, was discovered by the new owners of the property. The heart-wrenching story of the extremely tough cat was brought to light this week by Animal Shelter Vlaardingen, where the animal ended up. The cat was discovered in the western Dutch town of Schiedam, by the new owners of a house bought off a blind auction. As the new owners came to inspect the property, the house – vacated by its previous resident on July 1 – turned out to be not exactly empty. As they opened the door, an extremely thin cat bolted out of the house, ...

The reason I am writing the show is to hopefully get my story out there. I tried to make this as short as possible (that’s why I wrote a novel). When I was 24, I joined the airlines as a flight attendant working for Delta in NY. I loved being a flight attendant but the base closed 6 months after the horrific 9-11 tragedy and I was offered to transfer. My parents urged me to go back to school and earn a degree. I obtained a BA in history, and relocated back to NY. Eventually, I went on to work for a major company with pretty good pay. It was a cut-throat sales industry. The boss took my commissions that I made at a recruiting firm placing candidates at his company. A recruiter and my ...

“Liberty, Equality, Fraternity!” has come down to us as the lofty rallying-cry of the French Revolution, but in Charles Dickens’ A Tale of Two Cities it is rendered as “Liberty, Equality, Fraternity or Death!” (2) and we all know of the guillotine and its work. But Liberty and Equality are mutually exclusive and inversely proportional to one another in any government, and true Fraternity – an impulse welling up from within the individual towards his fellow man – cannot be imposed from without; therefore the French Revolution’s march towards Liberty, Equality, Fraternity or Death proved to be a march towards the perfect Equality of slavery to a ...

The main problem conservation biologists deal with is population: there’s either too much of one species or not enough of another. Because of the diversity in the animal and plant kingdoms, much of conservation work is concerned with the most effective ways to kill “bad” species and encourage “good” ones to reproduce. Here are a few of the most interesting ideas that scientists have used to control the lives of other species. Celebrities are often pretty eccentric. It makes sense. You don’t seek out fame because you want to blend in with the crowd and go unnoticed. If that were the case, they’d manage a Chili’s in Akron, not play dress-up pretend for a living or dedicate their lives to getting sports balls to go in stick- mounted baskets. So it’s no surprise, then, that celebrities tend to reflect their peculiarities onto their homes. 9 Penn Jillette .........The outside looks like an oversized McDonald’s play pit, and the inside, even weirder. Entrance and exit are accomplished by fire-pole. Moving through the house, you’ll encounter fake crime scenes, sex dungeons, and a huge ...

MAN HOSPITALIZED AFTER MISTAKING THREE POUNDS OF LAUNDRY DETERGENT AT LAUNDROMAT FOR COCAINE A Florida man has been hospitalized after he mistook several pounds of laundry detergent at a local laundromat for cocaine. Mario Iglesias, 47, a Miami resident, claims that he had been partying for the past week when he decided to take a break and wash his clothes at the nearby laundromat. Iglesias admits his use of drugs and alcohol may have impaired his judgment at the time. “I’d been snorting for days so when I saw a bag of cocaine lying next to me at the laundromat I just shoved my face in it and started snorting” Mario Iglesias, 47, told the reporters. Dr. Benjamin Schwartz ...

Despite what the left tells us, diversity is not a new thing nor is it something first discovered by the left. The earliest human societies had to contend with the fact that diverse groups of people were living under the same rule. Maybe it was a collection of minority groups living under the rule of a majority, or maybe it was one minor tribe ruling over the rest. The diversity, of course, was racial, ethnic, and religious. There are a number of ways that have evolved to contend with diversity. The first and most obvious was hard segregation. Every group had their place and the state helped maintain the boundaries. This was what cities in the north of America adopted in the 19th century. ...

The Tribe That Cursed Too Much - the linguistics behind Oceanic taboos

This island can out-swear you by a longshot. And you thought your language had a lot of bad words... Honor the dead and rethink cursing as we run afoul of some major taboos in Oceania. This is the story of the Kwaio and their unique taboo language. Dabbling in Malayo-Polynesian, I'm fascinated by this Oceanic contribution to linguistics: the idea that all curse words are part of a wider phenomenon called "taboo", and that a cultural mechanism stands behind taboo terms. I think I've finally found a way to tell their tale. NN COMMENTED THERE: They must have been studying the first world, where political correctness requires that all hot-button words be either banned or ...
