Americans Can Thank Their Elites' Arrogant Belief That They 'Won the Cold War' for Twenty Years of Actual Wars

Andrew Bacevich describes how the U.S. learned all the wrong lessons from the fall of the Berlin Wall and the end of the Cold War: You won’t hear it from any of the candidates vying to succeed Trump, but we are still haunted by our false conception of the Cold War. On the stump, politicians get away with reciting comforting clichés about the imperative of American global leadership. Yet the time for believing such malarkey is long gone. An essential first step toward recoupling national security policy and reason is to see the Cold War for what it was: not a “long, twilight struggle” ending in victory, but a vast and costly tragedy that inflicted needless ...

In the following, from Chapter VII of Mein Kampf, Vol. 1 (1925), Adolf Hitler describes how, while recovering at a hospital from a gas-attack, he heard the news of fall of German Emperor William II. The new government immediately sued for peace, and an armistace went into effect November 11, 1918. For a long time there had been something indefinite but repulsive in the air.... Unfavorable rumors were constantly coming from the navy, which was said to be in a state of ferment. But this, too, seemed to me more the product of the imagination of individual scoundrels than an affair involving real masses. Even in the hospital, people were discussing the end of the War which they hoped would ...

[Many websites have similar articles:] On the 29thof September 2019 in the Colosseum, a place of Christian martyrdom, a satanic statue of the infamous god Moloch associated with child sacrifice appeared for an exhibition that started at the end of September dedicated to the Carthaginian myths which is creating controversy especially amongst traditional Italian Catholics. For this unusual initiative, a reconstruction of the god Moloch in hollow bronze taken from the film Cabiria, an old 1914 Italian epic silent film directed by pioneer film director Giovanni Pastrone and shot in Turin, has been placed at the entrance of the world-famous Colosseum. Italian author and Illuminati member ...

The Democratic National Committee was broke and almost evicted from its office space. But someone stepped in at the last minute. In the third and final edition of his landmark dictionary of American politics, the longtime political pundit William Safire listed more than a dozen scandals with the “-gate” construction, including Winegate (dealing with the adulteration of Bordeaux wines), Koreagate (corruption of members of Congress by South Korean lobbyist Tongsun Park and the South Korean CIA), Irangate (the Iran-Contra affair), travelgate (the White House travel staff dismissed in the early days of the Clinton administration), rubbergate (bounced checks at a bank in the U.S. ...

“YOU MAY FIRE WHEN YOU ARE READY, GRIDLEY.” : January/February ’98 American History Feature Fire When Ready U.S. Navy Captain Charles Gridley earned a place in history on May 1, 1898,during the Battle of Manila Bay. By Richard Harris Just after midnight on May 1, 1898, the USS Olympia led the United States’s Asiatic Squadron quietly through the calm, glassy waters of the Boca Grande Channel, between the island of Corregidor and the coast of Luzon in the Philippines. The United States was at war with Spain, and the American squadron was preparing to attack a Spanish fleet in Manila Bay. As Sunday morning dawned hours later, the Olympia’s commander, ...

Lenin & The Sealed Train

Lenin & The Sealed Train The day Lenin wrote his fourth “Letter from Afar” a telegram was received at the Foreign Ministry in Berlin from the German High Command. The telegram read: “No objections to the transit of Russian revolutionaries if effected in special train with reliable escort. Organization can be worked out between representatives of IIIb [Military Passport Office] and Foreign Ministry.” From the tenor of the telegram, it would seem that the German High Command was only disturbed by the possibility that the revolutionaries would escape from the train and preach revolution in Germany. In later years Robert Grimm and Fritz Platten were to claim credit for ...

The "Business Plot" (also the Plot Against FDR and the White House Putsch) was an alleged political conspiracy in 1933 wherein wealthy businessmen and corporations plotted a coup détat to overthrow United States President Franklin D. Roosevelt. In 1934, the Business Plot was publicly revealed by retired Marine Corps Major General Smedley Butler testifying to the McCormack-Dickstein Congressional Committee. In his testimony, Butler claimed that a group of men had approached him as part of a plot to overthrow Roosevelt in a military coup. One of the alleged plotters, Gerald MacGuire, vehemently denied any such plot. In their final report, the Congressional committee ...

NEW YORK—The Roy Cohn documentary Bully, Coward, Victim was successfully screened last week at Lincoln Center to a full house, then turned into a pro-Rosenberg, anti-Trump manifestation. Had I known this, I would not have taken part in it, but what is a poor little Greek boy trying to make it in the movies to do? Do it, said Michael Mailer, and I followed orders like a good German soldier remaining in Stalingrad. Here’s the problem with the documentary. The atomic traitors emerge as heroic victims, my friend Roy Cohn as worse than Satan. There is something very wrong in this. The Rosenbergs betrayed their country by passing secrets to the Soviets, and the film depicts their ...

In late 2006 I was approached by Scott McConnell, editor of The American Conservative (TAC), who told me that his small magazine was on the verge of closing without a large financial infusion. I’d been on friendly terms with McConnell since around 1999, and greatly appreciated that he and his TAC co-founders had been providing a focal point of opposition to America’s calamitous foreign policy of the early 2000s. In the wake of 9/11, the Israel-centric Neocons had somehow managed to seize control of the Bush Administration while also gaining complete ascendancy over America’s leading media outlets, purging or intimidating most of their critics. Although Saddam Hussein ...

Stephen Kinzer's new book shows how Greatest Generation spooks justified their horrific experiments on unwitting Americans. Poisoner In Chief: Sidney Gottlieb and the CIA Search for Mind Control by Stephen Kinzer, September 2019, Henry Holt & Co., 368 pages In the 1962 film adaptation of Richard Condon’s The Manchurian Candidate, a diabolical North Korean doctor named Yen Lo tells Staff Sergeant Raymond Shaw to “pass the time with a little solitaire.” These trigger words, accompanied by a Queen of Diamonds playing card, prompts the lanky soldier to get up, and when instructed, brutally kill two of his own comrades sitting on the stage, both of whom appear under the ...

South Korea owns up to brutal past

SOMETHING remarkable has been happening in South Korea this year, without getting much attention anywhere. It has been a nation dragging its darkest secrets into the daylight - not historical crimes committed by the long-dead, but those carried out during the 60-year life of the Republic of Korea. The stream of reports coming out of Seoul's Truth and Reconciliation Commission are unsettling not just for Koreans, but also allied countries, including Australia which defended the southern Korean state and supported its successive leaders. Out of the competing barrages of propaganda that have shrouded the 1950-53 Korean War, we are finally getting conclusive admissions that some of the ...

The Balkans and eastern Europe In bringing about the fall of the Turkish, Austrian, and Russian empires, World War I provoked significant changes in the structures of the Eastern Orthodox Church. On the western borders of what was then the Soviet Union, in the newly born republics of Finland, Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania, the Orthodox minorities established themselves as autonomous churches. The first three joined the jurisdiction of Constantinople, and the Lithuanian diocese remained nominally under Moscow. In Poland, which then included several million Belorussians and Ukrainians, the ecumenical patriarch established an autocephalous church (1924) over the protests of Patriarch ...

World War II Turns 80 Today. The Aftermath Changed America Forever.

The American republic disappeared long ago, leaving a half-hearted, bungling semi-empire which views the entire world as its sphere of interest. The cause was less World War II than Washington’s decision afterwards to put the country on a permanent war footing, even in peacetime. Eighty Septembers ago the world plunged into the abyss of World War II. The worst conflict in human history began with Nazi Germany’s invasion of Poland on September 1, 1939. It was a horrid, murderous conflict which started at terrible and only got worse. Adolf Hitler’s attack on Poland, a state resurrected by the Versailles Treaty two decades before, was but the first act. Having signed a ...

Listverse -- 10 Surprising Confederates

It’s easy to view history through an oversimplifying lens—a phenomenon which often happens with the United States Civil War. Generalizations might proclaim, for example, that all Confederates were white Anglo-Saxons who wholeheartedly opposed both change and the American constitutional order. It is true that the Confederacy would not have come into its brief existence without widespread white support for racialized slavery, which its own vice president called the cornerstone of the rebellion. Yet these broad strokes paint over finer detail. The truth is, as always, more complicated. There are shades of gray among those who wore it. People like . . . Click for Full Text!Poster ...

Paddle steamer Greater Detroit: Being lost to a world that was looking for speed and convenience. Apr 18, 2017 Ian Harvey In November 2016, three divers working for the Great Lakes Maritime Institute dove twenty feet under the chilly waters of the Detroit River. Their goal was to attach cables that would raise the 6,000-pound anchor that once belonged to the regal side-paddle steamer named the Greater Detroit. The Greater Detroit was created by one of the best naval architects working in the Great Lakes region, Frank E. Kirby. In 1922, he designed a side-paddle steamship and took the plans to the Detroit & Cleveland Steamboat Line. They ordered two of these ships to be built. The ...
