A 1,500-year-old church which was buried under debris from an earthquake for more than a millennium has reopened to the public after a painstaking restoration of some of the world’s earliest Christian art. The sixth-century church of Santa Maria Antiqua is located in the ancient Roman Forum, at the bottom of the Palatine Hill, where Roman emperors lived for centuries in sumptuous palaces. It was buried under rubble by an earthquake in AD 847 and was only rediscovered in 1900 during archaeological excavations. It has taken more than 30 years to restore its exquisite interior, which is decorated with multi-coloured frescoes of saints, martyrs, angels and emperors. The project, ...

The Real Reason America Dropped The Atomic Bomb. It Was Not To End The War

On August 6, 1945, the world, sadly, entered the atomic age. Without warning, a single nuclear bomb on the Japanese city of Hiroshima killed about 90,000 people instantly and injured many others — who then died from radiation sickness. Three days later, a second atomic strike on the city of Nagasaki killed some 37,000 people and injured another 43,000. Together the two bombs eventually killed an estimated 200,000 Japanese civilians. “The Library of Congress adds roughly 60 million pages to its holdings each year, a huge cache of information for the public. However, also each year, the U.S. Government classifies nearly ten times that amount – an estimated 560 million pages of ...

Fort Sumter: The Civil War Begins Nearly a century of discord between North and South finally exploded in April 1861 with the bombardment of Fort Sumter Fort Sumter After Union troops refused to evacuate Fort Sumter, today a National Monument, Confederates opened fire. (Vincent Musi) By Fergus M. Bordewich Smithsonian Magazine | Subscribe April 2011 On the afternoon of April 11, 1861, a small open boat flying a white flag pushed off from the tip of the narrow peninsula surrounding the city of Charleston. The vessel carried three envoys representing the Confederate States government, established in Montgomery, Alabama, two months before. Slaves rowed the passengers the nearly ...

AMERICANS TOSS LADY LIBERTY OVERBOARD DURING CRISES

Americans take great pride in their country’s commitment to the values enshrined in the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution. At the top of that list are the rights enumerated in the first ten amendments to the Constitution — the Bill of Rights. Americans are fond of contrasting the protections that freedom of speech, due process of law, equal protection of the law, and other fundamental rights enjoy in the United States, with their absence in many other nations. The historical record shows, however, that U.S. political leaders and much of the public have been extremely quick to sacrifice such liberties during apparent national-security crises. Three episodes over the ...

The Confederacy adopts its Constitution Posted on March 10, 2016 by Bob Livingston image of original Confederate Constitution On March 11, 1861, the Confederate Constitution was adopted in the fledgling nation’s capital, Montgomery, Alabama. Delegates from South Carolina, Mississippi, Florida, Alabama, Georgia, Louisiana and Texas adopted the document which bore a striking resemblance to the U.S. Constitution, with a few notable exceptions. The changes were designed to reduce the scope of the national government and return more power to the states in the Jeffersonian vision of America. The preamble to document reads: We, the people of the Confederate States, each State acting in ...

Did Africans Sell Africans Into Slavery? Let’s Ask Some Africans

If there is a historical weapon more powerful and decisive than guns, it is certainly guilt. Those who seek to conquer will wield the primitive biblical notion of collective guilt as a bludgeon to dampen a rival group’s spirit and their willingness to resist. Guilt is injected like a fatal virus into entire populations to demoralize and weaken them. And at least as far as whites in the West are concerned, it is working like a charm. Without so much as asking a single question, many modern whites have gullibly swallowed a skewed and incomplete historical narrative that depicts them as history’s sole villains and the nonwhite world as innocent, suffering lambs. Alas, despite the ...

Bad News from Troy

[Classic: 12/5/2002] — It was going to be a short, easy war. King Menelaus of Sparta had a domestic problem: his beautiful wife Helen had run off with his handsome guest, the Trojan prince Paris. So he called in his chips, summoning other Greek rulers — all former suitors of Helen who owed him their fealty — to help him recover her. Surely Troy — a rich, civilized but isolated and effete city — could not withstand their combined forces for long. It would soon see reason and give up Helen. But Troy proved unexpectedly stubborn and tough. The war stretched on for a decade before it finally fell. The Greek victory came at enormous cost, and the lives of the victors ...

Clinton is the “right person” to carry out the psychotic imperatives of the global elite On Wednesday the Hollywood liberal elite sponsored an event at Radio City Music Hall in New York in support of Hillary Clinton. Katy Perry, Elton John, Oscar-winners Jamie Foxx and Julianne Moore made on- stage remarks along with Bill Clinton and daughter Chelsea Clinton. “I’m not voting for (Clinton) because she’s a woman,” Perry said between songs. “I’m voting for her because she’s the right person for the job.” Clinton was the “right person” to oversee the destruction of Libya, where 100,000 lives were lost, and also Waco, where more ...

America's Changing View of Mussolini and Italian Fascism

America's Changing View of Mussolini and Italian Fascism By Mark Weber America's image today of Benito Mussolini and his Italian Fascist regime is, to a considerable extent, a product of Second World War propaganda. The wartime image of the Duce (leader) as a clownish bully remains largely intact to this day. But this was not always so. During the 1920s and early 1930s, Mussolini and Fascist Italy were generally well regarded in the United States. John P. Diggins, professor of history at the University of California, Irvine, notes in his 1972 study, Mussolini and Fascism: The View from America (p.59): "Whatever Mussolini's reputation is today, from the time of the ...

CIA tried to kill Castro by lacing diving suit with tuberculosis – report

The CIA reportedly came up with some outlandish plots to kill former Cuban leader Fidel Castro, but this could just be the craziest yet. The US National Security Archive published information that Washington tried to give Castro a diving suit contaminated with tuberculosis. The National Security Archive alleges that the US government contacted lawyer James Donovan to conduct secret negotiations with Castro. Given Donavan’s connections to the Cuban leader, the CIA believed they could use this to their advantage to try and assassinate Castro. “At some point during Donovan’s negotiations with Castro” several officials in the covert operations division “devised a plan ...

Verdun: They Shall Not Pass

VERDUN – One hundred years ago this week, German artillery launched a mighty barrage of one million shells at French defenses on the wooded hills and deep ravines above the ancient fortress city of Verdun. The thunderous explosions of the “trummelfeuer” were heard 160 km away. By the second year of World War I, static trench warfare extended along the Western Front from the Belgian coast to Switzerland – a bloody modern version of medieval siege warfare. Neither the German Empire nor the Allies could impose a decisive victory. Suicidal frontal attacks against machine guns and field artillery slaughtered hundreds of thousands of soldiers. German army chief Eric von ...

Adolf Hitler’s Warning (2 videos, 15 mins.) Email from’Fritz’ to Lasha Darkmoon: Hi Lasha, I know you have never expressed a view on Adolf Hitler, either for or against, but I would like to see you publish this short video of Hitler on your website. The reason I request of you this favour is this… I have just finished reading your article on the Weimar Republic, THE SEXUAL DECADENCE OF WEIMAR GERMANY, which I found originally on Veterans Today and only discovered much later on your site when my German girlfriend sent me a link to the article. She said it was the best introduction to the sleazy underworld of 1920s Berlin she had ever read. So this is why I am now ...

The CIA’s “Phoenix Program” in Vietnam and the “War on Terror”

Review of Doug Valentine's Book The Phoenix Program in Vietnam in many ways provides a blue print for our own times. Assassinations and torture are the essence of the war on terror. As are death squads and false flag terror attacks. As are mass surveillance of the populace. Thanks to the work of Douglas Valentine in his classic book “The Phoenix Program” we have an extremely detailed account of the Phoenix Program exposing a classic example of the brutality of the CIA’s counter insurgency wars. By studying the Phoenix program one can gain a great deal of insight into the wars in Afghanistan, Syria and Iraq. How the book came to be written is an interesting story in ...

A simple model that helps make much about the modern world easier to comprehend is that of a high-low tag team against the middle. As part of a time-tested strategy of divide and rule, the rich tend to push for policies and attitudes that increase identity-politics divisiveness—more immigration, more Black Lives Matter rioting, more transgender agitation, and so forth—which makes it harder for the nonrich to team up politically to promote their mutual economic interests. You could call it: “Diverse and Conquer.” A striking example of how identity politics turn in practice into the Zillionaire Liberation Front has emerged in the war over which Dead White Male to kick ...

When Greece Was Rich—and Why

The Rise and Fall of Classical Greece, Josiah Ober, Princeton, 464 pages Did political decentralization foster classical civilization? That is one of the central claims of this fascinating new work of analytical history by the Stanford political scientist and classicist Josiah Ober. Ober uses the tools of institutional political economy to explore the causes of economic and cultural “efflorescence” in ancient Greece. Rather than focusing on the impacts wrought by individual decision-makers animated by distinctive outlooks or on the aftereffects of great fortuities, Ober does social science, using the evidence of history to test hypotheses about the significance of political ...

Seeking Justice for Guatemalan Slaughter: Reagan in the balance

Seeking Justice for Guatemalan Slaughter Brave prosecutors in Guatemala are trying to enforce accountability for government- sponsored rapes, tortures and murders in the 1980s, a time when President Reagan and his administration were complicit in the atrocities but remain respected U.S. figures, as Allan Nairn explained to Dennis J Bernstein. Comedian-turned-politician Jimmy Morales, who was sworn in as Guatemala’s president on Jan. 14, appears to have close ties to some of the country’s most notorious death squad leaders responsible for killing thousands and uprooting tens of thousands of indigenous people from the Guatemalan highlands and the rest of the country in the 1980s. ...

Nazi Holocaust organizer Adolf Eichmann who was executed by Israel back in 1962 for numerous war crimes, considered himself “a mere instrument in the hands of the [Nazi] leaders,” a letter to the then-president asking for clemency reveals. The information was released on Wednesday by the office of Israel's President Reuven Rivlin. The documents will be officially made public at a ceremony at Rivlin's official Jerusalem residence at International Holocaust Remembrance Day. The request of one of the masterminds of the ‘Final Solution’, a German plan for the extermination of the Jews during World War II, was made to then president Yitzhak Ben-Zvi. "There ...

Blacks and the Confederacy

Last July, Anthony Hervey, an outspoken black advocate for the Confederate flag, was killed in a car crash. Arlene Barnum, a surviving passenger in the vehicle, told authorities and the media that they had been forced off the road by a carload of “angry young black men” after Hervey, while wearing his Confederate kepi, stopped at a convenience store en route to his home in Oxford, Mississippi. His death was in no small part caused by the gross level of ignorance, organized deceit and anger about the War of 1861. Much of the ignorance stems from the fact that most Americans believe the war was initiated to free slaves, when in truth, freeing slaves was little more than an ...

Empires (Like the U.S.) Fall When Corruption Becomes Rampant
Post Date: 2016-01-09 11:55:55 by Ada

idespread corruption destroys empires. By way of example, corruption was one of the main causes of the collapse of the Roman Empire: The Praetorian Guard—the emperor’s personal bodyguards—assassinated and installed new sovereigns at will, and once even auctioned the spot off to the highest bidder [and see this]. The political rot also extended to the Roman Senate, which failed to temper the excesses of the emperors due to its own widespread corruption and incompetence. As the situation worsened, civic pride waned and many Roman citizens lost trust in their leadership. The Ottoman Empire started its decline when the sale of offices, bribery and corruption became widespread. ...
