At one time I was mystified why dowries were paid. A woman got married and her parents gave money and other material possessions to the groom? What was up with that? There had to be some sort of rational explanation for it. One explanation is that the dowry was "seed money" for the groom. Since men have traditionally supported women (since women got pregnant and squeezed out the babies), the dowry was a leg up to get the family established. That made a great deal of sense. It was a nail biter, but 49'ers beat the Falcons. It's been more than a few years, but finally California will be represented at the Super Bowl. LA Kings won the Stanley Cup. I have watched Gold Rush since the first show of the first season. Some of it is pretty good when they have actual miners who know what they are doing (like the young kid, Parker Schnabel and his grandpa) and the big guy from Sweden or Norway or wherever it is he's from. But I thought, and have for a while, that there was just too much about the show that was "off." I learned a bit more about it last night. There is a group on facebook called the Gold Rush Alaska Gossip and it pretty well lays out that the group the show centers on, the Hoffman crew, really don't know what they're doing, have sponsors (like Volvo) and leave when the producers get the footage they want. ...

My mother in law is visiting... Two weeks of french ,french food, french conversation, french insults, french talking toys to make sure my son becomes french (fuck the speech impediment dangers) because speaking french is not enough, one must BECOME french.... I can't remember where I read it, but the comment was along the lines of "They'll go all Sodini" on them. I didn't recognize the name so I Googled it. Sigh. I saw "The Hunger Games" last night with Number Three Girlfriend and I do recommend it. Some nasty stuff and some really unpleasant people but not whole lot of blood, but certainly a lot of death. I doubt I would have lasted very long even at 16. Maybe my Cub Scout and Boy Scout training might have helped. Every seat was taken in the theater which is why I insisted we get there half an hour early.
