How Al-Qaeda Ended Up With Anti-Aircraft Missiles: Here Is The Congressional Authorization

After the terrorist group Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), a rebrand of Jabhat al- Nusra, which is the Syrian al-Qaeda affiliate, claimed responsibility for the dramatic downing of a Russian Su-25 fighter jet over Idlib in northwest Syria on Saturday - the first Russian plane downed in Syria since 2015 - a number of analysts have published articles asking the obvious million dollar question: where did al-Qaeda get the portable anti-aircraft missile system used in the attack? Once such article in Al Monitor speculates on the following: "The three immediate questions that arose from the attack were how the downing was made possible, how the militants acquired the arms and whether there was a ...

Captive virgins, polygamy and sex slaves: Here’s what marriage would look like if we actually followed the Bible

Bible believers are beside themselves about the prospect that marriage norms and laws are changing. Most don’t actually read their Bibles. If they did, they would know that the biblical model of sex and marriage has little to do with the one they so loudly defend. Sex in the Bible includes rape, incest, master-slave sexual relations, captive virgins, and more. Of course, just because a story is told in the Bible doesn’t mean it is intended as a model for moral behavior. Does God forbid or command the behavior? Is it punished or rewarded? In the New Testament stories, does Jesus change the rules or leave them alone? By these criteria, the Bible not only describes many forms of ...

Lie After Lie: What Colin Powell Knew About Iraq Fifteen Years Ago, and What He Told the UN

As much criticism as Powell received for this — he’s called it “painful” and something that will “always be a part of my record” — it hasn’t been close to what’s justified. Powell was much more than just horribly mistaken: He fabricated “evidence” and ignored repeated warnings that what he was saying was false. Unfortunately, Congress never investigated Powell’s use of the intelligence he was given, so we don’t know many of the specifics. Even so, what did reach the public record in other ways is extremely damning. While the corporate media has never taken a close look at this record, we can go through Powell’s ...

Recipe Concocted for Perpetual War is a Bitter One

Perpetual war is leading to a host of societal ills, yet debates on war and peace are almost entirely absent from public discourse, Robert Wing and Coleen Rowley observe. Last October marked the 16th anniversary of our unending war – or military occupation – in Afghanistan, the longest conflict on foreign soil in U.S. history. The cost to human lives in our current cycle of U.S.-initiated “perpetual wars” throughout the Middle East and Africa is unthinkably high. It runs well into millions of deaths if one counts – as do the Nuremberg principles of international law – victims of spinoff fighting and sectarian violence that erupt after we destroy governance ...

Pentagon wants more "useable" weapons and an end to first strike taboo The Pentagon’s official outline for its use of nuclear force was denounced as “radical” and “extreme” by prominent anti-nuclear weapons groups when it was released Friday afternoon—confirming peace advocates’ worst fears that the Trump administration would seek to expand the use of nuclear force. “Who in their right mind thinks we should expand the list of scenarios in which we might launch nuclear weapons?” asked Peace Action in a statement. “Who let Dr. Strangelove write the Nuclear Posture Review?”The Nuclear Posture Review (NPR) calls for the ...

This freezing waterfall is an annual event. Something strange is going on here. In 2010 the province was in such a severe drought that the President of China had to tour the place.

The Forgotten Voices of America’s ‘Ignored Abroad’

Back-to-back hurricanes that wreaked havoc in Puerto Rico and the US Virgin Islands in 2017 and a false ballistic missile attack warning that traumatized Hawai'i have these "ignored abroad" territories and two states looking at separation from the United States. Although independence can be a costly endeavor, the Trump administration's lack of empathy and support for Puerto Rico, forty percent of which is still lacking electrical power four months after Hurricane Maria destroyed much of the island commonwealth's infrastructure, the Puerto Rican independence movement is receiving a fresh look from many Puertorriqueños. Although the two main Puerto Rican ...

The Jaysh al-Nasr rebel group in Syria, part of the US-backed Free Syrian Army, has posted footage of its fighters celebrating the shoot-down of a Russian Suhkoi-25 jet fighter in the Idlib province of Syria. It is the first time a Russian fighter has been shot down by Syrian rebels attempting to overthrow the government of Bashar al-Assad in Syria. The plane was apparently brought down by a man-portable air defense system (ManPADS) surface-to-air missile. According to press reports, the pilot ejected from the plane safely but was killed by the Syrian rebels on the ground. The 2017 US military spending bill provided authorization for the Department of Defense to arm the rebels with ...

US Sanctions, Baffled Russians, Hot Air and History

So, finally, the suspense is over. Kind of. The US Treasury has finally released the list of Russian entities and individuals which could (conditionally!) be sanctioned by the US Treasury in compliance with the H.R.3364 – Countering America’s Adversaries Through Sanctions Act. These two short excerpt from the report show why I say “could”: and Now let’s translate all this in plain English: the US took a copy of the Kremlin telephone book, then a copy of Forbes and created a new list combining both. Then the US proclaimed that these entities and individuals are not under any sanctions yet, but are candidates for such sanctions. Does that make *any* sense to you ...

This Is the Bizarre Reason Elvis Never Toured in the UK By Joe Setyon January 28, 2018 at 2:53pm In the 1950s and 60s, Elvis Presley was one of the most famous entertainers in the world. “The King” toured around the United States, and was always met with crowds of adoring fans. But Presley, who died in 1977, never performed in the United Kingdom, despite the fact that he had legions of fans there as well. According to Philip Norman, who wrote the book for a musical about Presley, there is a simple, yet bizarre reason that the musician never toured the United Kingdom. In a column for The U.K. Daily Mail published earlier this month, Norman claimed that Presley never ...

PressTv Unlike the United States, China is welcome in Latin America, because it “invests capital, is a good trading partner, respects countries' sovereignty” and does not pursue a policy of regime change, says Dennis Etler, an American political analyst who has a decades-long interest in international affairs. Etler, a former professor of Anthropology at Cabrillo College in Aptos, California, made the remarks in an interview with Press TV on Friday while commenting on a speech US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson delivered on Thursday before leaving for a Latin America tour. In a wide-ranging speech at the University of Texas, Tillerson warned Latin American countries ...

The State of the Union: A Year in Trump’s America

We’ve seen worse There’s usually not a whole lot of foreign policy material in the President’s State of the Union address, at least not since the days of George W. Bush and his invocation of Doestoevskyian nihilists as a justification for world conquest. Oh, it gets mentioned, of course, but usually at the end, as the obligatory capstone to all the rhetoric about “strength,” “freedom,” and “unity” that decorates these presidential perorations. President Trump’s speech was no exception: except for talk of “reciprocal” trade agreements (who could object?), lifting budget caps on military spending (they keep talking about it, and ...
