Local.no Researchers based in Norway believe that in around 10 years time cargo ships will have the technology to sail the seas without the need of a captain or crew. Marintek, part of the SINTEF group based in Norway, is one of a number of partners working on developing systems which can operate without the need for humans. The "Seatonomy" project is looking to have ships sailing without human crews in the next 10 to 20 years. The 12 million kroner ($1.9 million) research investment by SINTEF could actually improve ship safety as human error causes more than 75 percent of today’s vessel accidents. Researcher Ørnulf Rødseth said on ScienceNordic.com: ...

Hulbert: 'Making Bullish Case' for Stocks 'Getting a Lot Harder' Wednesday, 10 Sep 2014 08:45 AM By Dan Weil Several different measures show the stock market may face trouble ahead, says Mark Hulbert, editor of Hulbert Financial Digest. "Making the bullish case is getting a lot harder," he writes in his MarketWatch column. First, there's Nobel laureate economist Robert Shiller's cyclically adjusted price-earnings (CAPE) ratio, which is based on 10 years of earnings. It stands at 26.4, trailing only the levels of 1929, 1987 and 2007. Those peaks, of course, were followed by stock market crashes. "The CAPE isn't a perfect indicator, as Shiller ...

Bluster and Bluff in the Baltic

“I say to the people of Estonia and the people of the Baltics, today we are bound by our treaty alliance. … Article 5 is crystal clear: An attack on one is an attack on all. So if … you ever ask again, ‘who’ll come to help,’ you’ll know the answer – the NATO alliance, including the armed forces of the United States of America.” That was Barack Obama in Tallinn, Estonia, last week, reissuing a U.S. war guarantee to the tiniest of the Baltic republics – which his Cold War predecessors would have regarded as certifiable madness. From 1945 to 1989, no president would have dreamed of issuing a blank check for war in Eastern Europe. Our red ...

Chinese mainland on alert after Taiwan's cooking oil scandal

BEIJING, Sept. 6 (Xinhua) -- China's top quality watchdog on Saturday cautioned against the consumption of food products that may contain recycled cooking oil from Taiwan. Taiwan police on Thursday busted a ring of six people selling hundreds of tonnes of recycled cooking oil made from kitchen waste and grease of leather processing plants in Kaohsiung and neighboring Pingtung. Chang Guann Co., a well-established supplier of cooking oil in Taiwan, purchased the recycled oil to produce 782 tonnes of lard, and sold the products to at least 235 food companies and restaurants. "After a preliminary inspection, the mainland has not found any imports of lard products from the ...

Cutting fossil subsidies nessesary to advance renewables: agency

Paris (AFP) - Renewable energy, essential for meeting global CO2 emission targets, needs a stable regulatory framework, a cut in fossil fuel subsidies and more interconnected power grids to develop, a global energy agency said Sunday. The development of renewable energy will lead to a "new industrial paradigm" for electricity production, as it should expand by 70 percent globally between 2011 and 2030, according to the International Renewable Energy Agency. IRENA said cutting, or even cancelling, subsidies to energy produced with fossils would significantly reduce the cost of financing renewable projects. "Renewable energy investors need stable and predictable policy ...

"The stock market is at an all-time, but economic activity is not at an all-time," explains billionaire investor Sam Zell to CNBC this morning, adding that, "every company that's missed has missed on the revenue side, which is a reflection that there's a demand issue; and when you got a demand issue it's hard to imagine the stock market at an all-time high." Zell said he is being very cautious adding to stocks and cutting some positions because "I don't remember any time in my career where there have been as many wildcards floating out there that have the potential to be very significant and alter people's thinking." Zell also discussed his ...

What are the “‘Ebola Tech Plays’ Set to Skyrocket” from Teeka Tiwari?

Teeka Tiwari teasers wash up on the shores of Gumshoe island every few months, though we don’t cover them all that often because he hasn’t done a lot of teasing of individual stock ideas (he has more frequently, if memory serves, pitched his trading “systems”). It looks like Tiwari’s Mega Trends is now being published by Common Sense Publishing, one of the newer arms of the Agora octopus, so perhaps we’ll see more of his teases in the months to come. This one caught the eye as one of several active promotion campaigns about Ebola-related stocks. No one is surprised that any stock with any kind of hint of a connection to curing or treating the dreaded Ebola ...

Big Tech Teeters, May Sack Most People since 2009

There is one thing for sure that big American tech companies, many of them severely revenue-challenged, excel at: buying other companies. They’re all doing it. And the price they pay? The higher, the better. They’re paying for these overvalued acquisitions with their overvalued stock, of which they can print an unlimited amount; and they’re paying for them with money they can borrow at nearly no cost after inflation. When the cost of capital is near zero, thanks to the Fed’s machinations, it doesn’t really matter on what this nearly free capital gets blown. So long as it doesn’t get spent on people. Acquisitions bestow a lot of benefits on the acquirer, ...

Businesses accusing Yelp of extortion lose another round in court

Can a business buy itself an amazing rating on Yelp? Maybe. The influential ratings website denies tampering with any reviews, but a federal appeals court ruled that it can if it wants to — saying it would not amount to extortion. The decision by the U.S. 9th Circuit Court of Appeals in San Francisco was in response to a lawsuit filed by small businesses alleging Yelp manipulated ratings to extort businesses into advertising. "The business owners may deem the posting or order of user reviews as a threat of economic harm, but it is not unlawful for Yelp to post and sequence the reviews," Marsha S. Berzon, a member of the court's three-judge panel, wrote in the ruling ...

Ecuador will be the First Country to Start Digital Currency

Ecuador has announced it will begin to circulate electronic currency created by its central bank in December. This is the way of the future. They often take a country like this for the test case. Ecuador will begin the process and we will see it swing to the USA and Europe during the decline in the ECM after 2015.75. This is the way to the future. Ecuador’s currency is effectively the US dollar. Ecuador is planning to take the first step toward abandoning the country’s existing currency, the U.S. dollar as people perceive the action. But this is a trial run for the USA since it will be a digital replacement that is going to emerge as a new electronic currency.

Making Money On White Displacement, With The Help Of An Iranian Immigrant

Ten years ago I worked for Ocean Tomo, which styled itself with more enthusiasm than precision as “an intellectual capital merchant bank.” Ocean Tomo’s founder and CEO, and my boss, was Jim Malackowski who drove race cars, owned the most expensive single-family house in Chicago at the time, and, being fashionably ultra-liberal, helped bankroll a promising Democratic Senate candidate he insisted on calling “Baruch” Obama. Jim wanted to make money from white displacement. He would not have used the phrase “white displacement;” he preferred speaking of “preferences.” After all, everyone has preferences. The United States government makes no secret ...

Republicans Can Learn A Lot From Burger King's Move To Canada

The merger of U.S. hamburger giant Burger King with Tim Horton’s, Canada’s favorite coffee shop, will create the world’s third largest “fast food” company with a total of 18,000 restaurants in over 100 countries. It is also a piercing wake-up call for the U.S. because the new company will make its global headquarters in Canada’s province of Ontario. That underscores what savvy business everywhere have learned, namely, that the United States is an increasingly less attractive place to do business. “Canada has quietly and politely become, well, more AMERICAN than America,” says columnist Stephen Green. Since 2003, more than thirty-five major American ...

Fed: US consumers have decided to 'hoard money'

One of the great mysteries of the post-financial crisis world is why the U.S. has lacked inflation despite all the money being pumped into the economy. The St. Louis Federal Reserve thinks it has the answer: A paper the central bank branch published this week blames the low level of money movement in large part on consumers and their "willingness to hoard money." The paper also cites the Fed's own policies as a reason for consumers' unwillingness to spend.. Though American consumers might dispute the notion that inflation has been low, the indicators the Fed follows show it to be running well below the target rate of 2 percent that would have to come before interest ...

Libertarian Thought Is Rapidly Winning Hearts and Minds

Lew Rockwell has just shown how the New York Times and other Republicran media belittle the rapidly growing impact of serious Libertarian thinkers and actors on America and beyond and shows that a large and growing minority of serious people in America are thinking seriously about the ideas and goals of Libertarianism. In short, the best and brightest of Americans are awaking more and more to the catastrophes of the System and to the realistic and moral alternatives Libertarians have been proposing forcefully for centuries. This is not yet clear even to most of the serious people waking up to Libertarian thought and action, both because of the Big Media belittling and blacking-out ...

You see, rumors are circling that the deal will result in another tax inversion, with Burger King fleeing to Canada in order to pay a lower corporate tax rate. Yet just a few months ago, Buffett stated, “We do not feel that we are unduly ...
