Feb. 15, 2007, 1:21PM FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. — A judge ordered another DNA sample be taken from Anna Nicole Smith's body Thursday as he heard often fiery arguments in the fight over the former Playboy Playmate's remains and custody of her infant daughter. The swab of Smith's cheek was to be taken during a lunchtime recess, despite the objections of attorneys for her longtime companion, Howard K. Stern, and her estranged mother, Vergie Arthur, and testimony from the medical examiner and DNA experts that such an additional sample was likely not necessary. Circuit Judge Larry Seidlin said he wanted to make sure all samples were taken before Smith was buried, so her body ...

Coaches offer fans a quandary February 4, 2007 The Associated Press ATLANTA — With two black coaches in the Super Bowl for the first time, the historic accomplishment presents a welcome dilemma for many black fans: For whom to root? Many are not picking sides in Sunday's game — they see Indianapolis Colts Coach Tony Dungy and Chicago Bears Coach Lovie Smith's presence in the NFL's biggest game as a win-win situation. "We can't lose," said New York University history professor Jeffrey Sammons, who studies sports and race. Black coaches led two of the four teams that reached the NFL's conference title games, so the odds were good that one would ...

(02-04) 19:06 PST MIAMI (AP) -- A wet and wild Super Bowl, the winning conditions for Peyton Manning and the Indianapolis Colts. A team built for indoors found its footing on a rain-soaked track and outplayed the Chicago Bears to win the NFL title 29-17 Sunday. The Colts were far less sloppy, particularly their star quarterback, who proved he can indeed win the big game — the biggest game. That's what it was for Tony Dungy, too. He became the first black coach to win the championship, beating good friend and protege Lovie Smith in a game that featured two black coaches for the first time in Super Bowl history. It was a game of firsts: the first rainy Super Bowl and the ...

Superbowl season is always one of the most interesting times of the year for sports wagering. All of the hype surrounding the big game makes for numerous betting opportunities - some books have over 200 different proposition bets to choose from. With the sheer number of lines on the board, every bettor is sure to find a few attractive options, but sorting through the dozens of wagers available can be difficult. There are three key considerations that proposition bettors should keep in mind this weekend: First, aggressive line shopping will definitely pay off. There is a lot of variation between sportsbooks on the line offered on any particular bet. Hunting down the best one will add ...

NFL Gets Its Panties in a Bunch Over Jesus and Big TVs

NFL Gets Its Panties in a Bunch Over Jesus and Big TVs In a truly noble move, Fall Creek Baptist Church in Indianapolis tried to bring football and Jesus together on Super Bowl Sunday, before having its plans sacked (sorry, obligatory pun) by the NFL. While the church fouled for sure (again, sorry) by initially planning to charge for the bash, even after making the event free to all who worship, the NFL refused to budge, saying the church's plans to show the game on a projector weren't kosher. What's strange here is the NFL's claim that copyright law "limits it to one TV no bigger than 55 inches." Budding lawyers out there, is this just BS? Does this just ...

click for more pics Like the Alps, but in Iowa By P.J. Huffstutter Times Staff Writer January 1, 2007 Cedar Falls, Iowa — SURROUNDED by cornfields that stretch to the horizon, in a place where molehills pass for mesas, avid outdoorsman Don Briggs has long dreamed of climbing a mountain. So he decided to build one. Briggs spends most winter nights hosing down a quartet of grain silos on a friend's farm — and relies on the Corn Belt's frigid temperatures to transform the water into frozen walls of ice that tower nearly 70 feet straight up. By the time he's done, the ice encasing the outside of the silos is 4 feet thick in spots — and ready for the onslaught of ...

Chicago Bears' defensive tackle Terrence "Tank" Johnson was arrested after police recovered six firearms and marijuana in his Gurnee home while executing a search warrant Thursday morning. Sources tell CBS 2 complaints from a neighbor in Gurnee prompted police to search the garbage from Johnson's home three times in recent weeks. The affidavit for a search warrant indicates they found marijuana residue, and the judge granted the request. But neither the judge nor state's attorneys were told or realized that "Terry Johnson" was "Tank Johnson," the Bears starting tackle. Johnson was not home when police arrived around 11 a.m. Thursday, apparently ...

Nash scores 42 to outshine Kidd Nash scores 42 to outshine Kidd's triple-double in Suns win Paul Coro The Arizona Republic Dec. 8, 2006 12:00 AM EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. - As the Nets home crowd was informed that Jason Kidd had just tied Wilt Chamberlain for the third most triple-doubles in NBA history, only Steve Nash could get Kidd to do something he rarely does on the court - smile. Nash patted the back of fellow point guard and his former teammate/mentor's head and said, "You've only got 75 more than me." De-icing Kidd's game face is not the only thing Nash can do. Only Nash could steal his thunder - and a Suns win, their league-best eighth in a row - as he ...

LONDON (AFP) - A man was rushed to hospital in Britain with severe internal injuries after trying to launch a powerful firework from his bottom, an ambulance service spokesman said. It is thought that the 22-year-old could have been trying to imitate a scene from "Jackass: The Movie", a controversial film featuring a series of edgy pranks. Footage of the incident in Sunderland, north-east England, was captured on a mobile phone by a gang of youths and shows a white flash followed by hysterical laughter and a youth shouting: "Ha ha ha ha," followed by an expletive. A spokesman for the North East ambulance service said: "We received a call stating there was a male ...

Mothers Wearing Army Boots by Larry L. Beane II by Larry L. Beane II DIGG THIS I was distressed to read a paragraph in the Reporter (the national newspaper of the Lutheran Church – Missouri Synod). In the October 2006 issue, page 2, in the article entitled: "Conference explores ways to help chaplains readjust after returning from combat zones," there is the following paragraph: "A female soldier is driving a supply truck at dusk in Iraq. A boy, perhaps 10, runs in front of the vehicle, but she has been trained not to stop. She hits him and keeps driving. Back home in the States she thinks about the Iraqi boy all the time. Especially when she looks at her own 10 ...

With Hands and Hounds, Stalking Feral Hogs in Texas

ASPERMONT, Tex. — On a moonless October night, with the Milky Way staining the West Texas sky, a burly man in overalls turned off the engine of his mud-caked white Toyota truck. Yelps from coyotes and an owl’s hoot occasionally broke the silence. Then, from an open field, Bob Richardson heard the noise he had been awaiting. Four of his short-haired scent hounds, which had been released earlier, began to bark from the darkness. Mr. Richardson jumped out of the truck and freed a black pit bull from a cage on the truck’s flatbed. He chased after his pit bull into the darkness toward the barking hounds. He tripped in a wet ditch but kept running through the milo stalks. When ...

Costly error ends Tigers' season

ST. LOUIS -- A season that began with pitchers fielding practice in February, among other things, will end with everyone anticipating PFP next year. In between, the best pitching staff in baseball gave the team quite a ride. Hours after Tigers manager Jim Leyland hoped aloud that his team wouldn't extend their record for pitchers' errors in a World Series, the problem arose again at a time the Tigers couldn't afford it. Justin Verlander's throw wide of third base in the fourth inning allowed Jeff Weaver's comebacker to score the tying run and put the go-ahead tally in position to score, sending the Tigers home with a 4-2 loss in Game 5. The upset of all upset seasons, an unlikely rise ...

Bears do-it-all defense keys epic comeback vs. Cards GLENDALE, Ariz. (AP) -- Six turnovers, 3 points on offense, and somehow the Chicago Bears are still unbeaten. Somehow, some way, the Bears rallied from 20 points down at halftime and escaped with a 24-23 victory in Arizona on Monday night, leaving the shellshocked Cardinals to ponder yet another excruciating late-game collapse. "Sometimes, when you're a team of destiny, things like that happen," Chicago coach Lovie Smith said. The Bears are off to their best start in 20 years at 6-0. For that, they can thank their defense, punt returner Devin Hester and Arizona kicker Neil Rackers. Rex Grossman gets no credit for this one. ...

NEW SMYRNA BEACH, Fla. (AP) -- The Lake County sheriff killed in an accident in a charity bus race somehow exited the vehicle and was hit by other buses, said one of the drivers, Daytona Beach's police chief. Chief Mike Chitwood said he saw what looked like a pile of clothes on the track as he rounded a curve Saturday at New Smyrna Speedway. Beside the pile, the school bus driven by Sheriff Chris Daniels had spun onto the infield during the charity racetrack event. "And then a light came on in my head," Chitwood said. "That pile was Chris' body." He said he hurried to the scene and instantly knew a bus had run him over. The Florida Highway Patrol is still ...

Written off by the entire baseball world only three years ago, the Tigers made it official Saturday. They're back, and on the prowl. Ordonez hit his second homer of the game, connecting for a three-run shot with two outs in the bottom of the ninth inning that lifted Jim Leyland's Tigers over the Oakland Athletics 6-3 for a four-game sweep of the AL championship series. With the crowd of 42,967 at Comerica Park in delirium, joined by fans watching from distant downtown buildings and all over Michigan, the Tigers celebrated. The wild-card Tigers ...

Racism by fans prompts a UEFA warning to Croatian footballers The UEFA warned Croatia on Tuesday (October 10th) that it could face serious sanctions if there are new instances of racist behaviour among its fans. "The sanctions range from a fine to points deduction to exclusion from the competition," UEFA's head of communications, William Gaillard, said ahead of a key Euro 2008 Group E qualifier between Croatia and England in Zagreb on Wednesday. "It's clear that second-time and third-time offenders are not going to be treated at all the same way as a first-time offender." Two months ago, around 200 Croatian fans formed a giant human swastika during their national ...

Jeremy Bonderman offered each Yankee batter a choice on Saturday: Drop his bat and bend over for a spanking, or Bonderman would throw a baseball at high speed toward them. Yankee after Yankee chose the former option, dropping both cudgel and trou, and receiving a severe thrashing rather than face Bonderman's fearsome fastballs and sliders. Until the third inning, that is, when No. 8 batter Alex Rodriquez, perhaps believing that Bonderman would not follow through on his threat, actually entered the batter's box. Bonderman, a man of his word, immediately hurled a baseball within a foot of Rodgriquez, who immediately dropped his bat and raced to the mound, unbuckling his belt as he ran. ...
