Powerful Government Accountability Office report confirms key 2004 stolen election findings by Bob Fitrakis & Harvey Wasserman October 26, 2005 As a legal noose appears to be tightening around the Bush/Cheney/Rove inner circle, a shocking government report shows the floor under the legitimacy of their alleged election to the White House is crumbling. The latest critical confirmation of key indicators that the election of 2004 was stolen comes in an extremely powerful, penetrating report from the Government Accountability Office that has gotten virtually no mainstream media coverage. The government's lead investigative agency is known for its general incorruptibility and its ...

WASHINGTON -- The trade deficit soared to a record in September as the Gulf Coast hurricanes helped push America's foreign oil bill to an all-time high. The politically sensitive deficit with China also set a record. The Commerce Department reported Thursday that the deficit jumped to $66.1 billion in September, 11.4 percent higher than the $59.3 billion imbalance recorded in August. It was a far bigger increase than analysts had been expecting and reflected in part a record $23.8 billion in oil purchases as the price skyrocketed, reflecting widespread shutdowns of production facilities following hurricanes Katrina and Rita. So far this year, the deficit is running at an annual rate of $70 ...

Please do not misunderstand your editor: his motto is the only good terrorist is a dead terrorist. But there is nonetheless something stomach-churning about the way terrorists are choosing to die in Ramadi. Read the account below, and you'll find yourself asking: are these men on powerful drugs? Are they cretins with IQ 60? What's going on here? Multi National Forces West press release, forwarded by Mike Thompson: "In the first incident, a sniper team observed an insurgent digging a hole along a street that historically contained a high number of improvised explosive devices (IEDs). The sniper team engaged the insurgent with one round and was able to confirm one enemy killed in ...

NORRISTOWN - Senior Pentagon officials were warned not to let the USS Cole dock in Yemen two days before terrorists attacked the ship five years ago killing 17 sailors, according to Congressman Curt Weldon, who said the crucial intelligence was gleaned from the former secret defense operation, "Able Danger." Weldon, vice chairman of the House Armed Services Committee, revealed the information in a House speech last Wednesday evening that blasted the Defense Intelligence Agency's (DIA) attempts to discredit Army Reserve Lt. Col. Anthony Shaffer, a DIA employee who worked as a liaison with the "Able Danger" team. In June, Shaffer told The Times Herald during an ...

CANCUN, Mexico - Mexicans and stranded tourists, hungry and frustrated after a two-day beating by Hurricane Wilma, stood in line to buy supplies Sunday or simply raided grocery or furniture stores, dragging goods from shops ripped open by the storm. The hurricane's steady march toward southern Florida meant an end here to two days of howling winds and torrential rains that shattered windows, peeled away roofing and sent the ocean crashing into hotel lobbies. The sun emerged over Mexico's sugar-white Caribbean beaches. But another kind of chaos took over, as police shot into the air to scare looters away from a shopping center, and looters responded by throwing rocks and chucks of ...

The October 1 suicide bombing outside the University of Oklahoma football stadium may have been the work of a terrorist cell, not simply the act of a disturbed student. Many of the 85,000 football fans at the Oklahoma University-Kansas State game on Saturday, October 1 thought they were hearing thunder. Others thought fireworks or a game cannon had been set off. But some in the packed Oklahoma Memorial Stadium were anxiously thinking "BOMB!" The loud explosive noise that erupted during the game's second quarter "was heard as far as five miles away," according to a report in The Oklahoma Daily, the university's student newspaper. It was indeed a bomb that had ...

A Pair of Yellow Eyes and a .44In the still waters of a Louisiana swamp, alligator hunters face off with a prehistoric quarry. Modern fashion houses are waiting. By Ellen Barry Times Staff Writer October 8, 2005 GROSSE TETE, La. — There is no easy way to get to Smith Lake. The road ends half a mile away, beside a narrow channel dense with waterlilies. When the hunters slide their skiff into the canal, the whole swamp billows beneath them like a curtain at an open window. After that they enter a long corridor. The water is gray-brown, as thick as sauce, and the air has the sweet-foul smell of swamp gas. Around them, everything twitches: The wings of dragonflies tremble, spiders skitter ...

Who's in Charge? Karl Rove!

All you really need to know about the White House's post-Katrina strategy -- and Bush's carefully choreographed address on national television tonight -- is this little tidbit from the ninth paragraph of Elisabeth Bumiller and Richard W. Stevenson's story in the New York Times this morning: "Republicans said Karl Rove, the White House deputy chief of staff and Mr. Bush's chief political adviser, was in charge of the reconstruction effort." Rove's leadership role suggests quite strikingly that any and all White House decisions and pronouncements regarding the recovery from the storm are being made with their political consequences as the primary consideration. More specifically: ...

BANGKOK, Thailand (AP) - Straddled atop hulking pachyderms and wielding long mallets, the Chivas Regal Scotland team clinched their second King's Cup Elephant Polo title Sunday after scoring a golden goal in overtime to beat Thailand's Mullis Capital, 6-5. Some 1,500 spectators came to watch the fifth annual charity game to raise money for Thailand's National Elephant Institute in Lampang, northern Thailand. “I have spoken several times about the strong possibility of a joint US/Israeli attack on Iran. This has not happened but understand that it has been on the drawing board for some time now waiting for events to “clarify” as the President says. Also being planned is a January, 2006, attack on Syria. This is not because Syria threatens the United States (to the contrary, seeing the destruction and slaughter of civilians the US troops are wreaking daily in their neighbor, they want nothing to do with us. The idea is that Kurdish oil from northern Iraq is wanted to ship, via a pipeline across Syria, to a shipping port in Haifa, Israel. At one stroke, Israel will gain access to ...

ADVERTISEMENT Strips of metal were peeled away, creating two holes that were visible from the floor of the huge arena. Water dripped in and people were moved away from about five sections of seats directly below. Others watched as sheets of metal flapped visibly and noisily. From the floor, more than 19 stories below the dome, the openings appeared to be 6 feet long. "The superdome is not in any dangerous situation," Gov. Kathleen Blanco said. ...

"Women just don't know how to gauge when someone is unfixable," said Brown, who hopes to clue them in with her latest book, "How to Spot a Dangerous Man ...

COURCHEVEL, FRANCE - Caution: falling hopes. One by one, the riders considered contenders to unseat six-time Tour de France champion Lance Armstrong cracked on the climb to this ski resort Tuesday, littering the roadway behind him like loose rock. Three riders stayed with Armstrong in the final few miles, and his trademark acceleration in the final half-mile couldn't quite shake bright young Spanish star Alejandro Valverde, who won Stage 10. Few men with the talent or the team support to chase Armstrong remain within realistic striking distance, and the yellow jersey he pulled on again after a two-day break is most likely what he will wear for his curtain call on the ...

PITTSBURGH -- James Henry Smith was a zealous Pittsburgh Steelers fan in life, and even death could not keep him from his favorite spot: in a recliner, in front of a TV showing his beloved team in action. Smith, 55, of Pittsburgh, died of prostate cancer Thursday. Because his death wasn't unexpected, his family was able to plan for an unusual viewing Tuesday night. The Samuel E. Coston Funeral Home erected a small stage in a viewing room, and arranged furniture on it much as it was in Smith's home on game day Sundays. Smith's body was on the recliner, his feet crossed and a remote in his hand. He wore black and gold silk pajamas, slippers and a robe. A pack of cigarettes and a beer were ...
