Elite take home-school route By Sal Ruibal, USA TODAY Will Viana gets out of bed at 4 a.m., washes his face and pads into the kitchen of his family's home in Valrico, Fla., for a bowl of oatmeal. This is not a middle-of-the-night snack: The slim 13-year-old soon will head out through the rainy gloom for several grueling hours of swim practice. When his Blue Wave teammates finish their workouts, they will rush to catch a bus that will take them to their public schools. But Viana, an aspiring Olympian, will head home for a second breakfast and his lessons, taught by his mother, Tracy. He'll be back in the pool by midafternoon. Viana and his family are part of a small but growing trend ...

More than 50 cars that included $200,000, 200-mph exotics left Seattle on Saturday, with some clocked going 120 mph. Racers veered between lanes, followed too close and otherwise drove aggressively, forcing troopers to stop all traffic on the freeway with a rolling roadblock necessary to pull over the vehicles. Kittle Book Charity case? Barry, Barry disappointing Tuesday, May 31, 2005 Ron Kittle is no fan of Barry Bonds — not after his tense encounter with the slugger at Wrigley Field in 1993. Here's an excerpt from Kittle's book, describing how he approached Bonds with a couple of Bonds' game-worn San Francisco Giants road jerseys, asking him to autograph them for an auction for Kittle's charity for children with cancer: "I paid about $110 of my own money for them, so they could be auctioned off at the golf outing. I did that all the time for stars like Mark McGwire, Sammy Sosa, Derek Jeter and Roger Clemens. When I tell them how their autographs help the cause, every player gladly ...

Freedom Above Fortune News Dear Friends: It has been about 5 weeks since I last updated you about events surrounding my June 14th, 2005 trial, where I will defend against allegations that I willfully aided or assisted in the preparation and presentation of amended tax returns that were false as to a material matter and that I conspired to defraud the United States in connection with assistance rendered to my client, Walter "Al" Thompson. It has been a busy five weeks to be sure. My legal team and I have been pleased with our progress to date but there is still much to be done. I apologize for the length of this email. There have been a lot of developments and I want to share ...

Fred Cronin, a fisheries biologist for the Illinois Department of Natural Resources, told The Kansas City Star that the stress of being transported may have proved too much for the old, heavy fish. "We're guessing that this fish was at least 30 years old," Cronin said. "When you have a fish this old, this heavy, that has lived in zero gravity its whole ...

In a league of her ownGirl, 11, throws perfect game against all-boys team THE ASSOCIATED PRESS May 18, 2005, 1:07 PM EDT OAKFIELD, N.Y. -- Katie Brownell is a shy 11-year-old girl of few words. But when she gets on the baseball field, she lets her pitching do the talking. Brownell is the only girl in the Oakfield-Alabama Little League baseball program in this community about halfway between Buffalo and Rochester. On Saturday, that didn't stop her from accomplishing something league officials can't remember anybody -- boy or girl -- ever doing. She threw a perfect game for the Dodgers in an 11-0 victory over the Yankees. How dominant was she? She struck out all 18 batters she faced in ...

Parents taking issue with forfeits when boys don't join girls on mat By Linda Shaw Seattle Times staff reporter Girls who wrestled for several Puget Sound-area middle schools this year easily won their matches against boys from two private schools. The girls stepped onto the mat. Their opponents from Tacoma Baptist and Cascade Christian stayed in their seats. The referee then raised the girls' hands to signal they'd won by forfeit. But the easy victories didn't sit well with the girls, including Meaghan Connors, a seventh-grader at McMurray Middle School on Vashon Island. Her father, Jerry, is prepared to go to court over what he considers a clear case of sex discrimination. For years, ...

Seventeen Techniques for Truth Suppression Originally Thirteen Techniques for Truth Suppression by David Martin, author of America's Dreyfus Affair Strong, credible allegations of high-level criminal activity can bring down a government. When the government lacks an effective, fact-based defense, other techniques must be employed. The success of these techniques depends heavily upon a cooperative, compliant press and a mere token opposition party. Dummy up. If it's not reported, if it's not news, it didn't happen. The U.S. Army determined days after Army Ranger Pat Tillman's 2004 death in Afghanistan that the former professional football player had been killed by friendly fire, but kept it secret for weeks and even destroyed evidence, Army officials said on Wednesday. A 1,600-page report by Brig. Gen. Gary Jones of the Army Special Operations Command found that the Army did not tell his family or the public that Tillman had been killed mistakenly by fellow Rangers until weeks after his nationally televised memorial service, officials said. At the time, the Army's public account of Tillman's death on April 22, 2004, in a remote canyon near the Pakistani border indicated he had been slain by enemy ...

When written rules are broken, punishment follows. It's a basic tenet in sports, and one we see practiced nearly every day. What we don't often see, and frankly, what I can't ever recall seeing, is a punishment for breaking unwritten rules. But that appears to be what took place at Central Cabarrus High this past week. Softball coach Monte Sherrill was suspended by the school for two games after his team, which is ranked fourth in the nation by USA Today, beat West Charlotte, 55-0, on April 15. Go ahead and read that score again; it's not a typo. And to make matters worse, the game lasted just two innings (two innings!) before West Charlotte's athletic director asked officials to end ...

Jerell Thomas was convicted after the killing. The Washington state Court of Appeals yesterday overturned the conviction of Jerell Thomas, who killed 20-year-old Kristopher Kime in the 2001 Mardi Gras riot. The decision was not unexpected, but it does put pressure on the King County prosecutor to win a new conviction in a case that shocked the city. Thomas was found guilty in 2001 of second-degree felony murder in the death of Kime, who was punched three times in the head, according to testimony at his trial. Kime was blindsided because he was helping a woman who had also been victimized in the melee. Thomas, then 17, also was convicted of assault in connection with attacks on two ...

Abduction, Often Violent, a Kyrgyz Wedding Rite By CRAIG S. SMITH ISHKEK, Kyrgyzstan - When Ainur Tairova realized she was on her way to her wedding, she started choking the driver. Her marriage was intended to be to a man she had met only the day before, and briefly at that. Several of his friends had duped her into getting into a car; they picked up the would-be groom and then headed for his home. Once there, she knew, her chances of leaving before nightfall would be slim, and by daybreak, according to local custom, she would have to submit to being his wife or leave as a tainted woman. "I told him I didn't want to date anyone," said Ms. Tairova, 28. "So he decided to ...

Florida high court refuses to hear Limbaugh appeal By JILL BARTON Associated Press Writer WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. — The Florida Supreme Court said Thursday it will not consider an appeal from conservative commentator Rush Limbaugh over prosecutors' seizure of his medical records during an investigation into whether he illegally purchased painkillers. The 4-3 order did not explain the court's reasoning. Limbaugh's attorney had argued that an appeals court misconstrued Florida law when it ruled prosecutors could review the records. Prosecutors seized Limbaugh's medical records in 2003 for an investigation into whether he illegally purchased prescription painkillers, but they have ...

Peter Lau, president of the China Unity Assn. of Greater Los Angeles, says that it's appropriate to raise China's flag, given the country's surging economy and its many ties with Chinatown businesses. Others are not so sure. The first time they tried to raise the Chinese flag in Los Angeles' Chinatown two decades ago, a mob of anti-communists tore it down and burned it. On Sunday, a group of Chinese Americans will try again. And this time, they say the red banner with its signature five yellow stars is here to stay. If they are right, it would mark a significant shift in Southern California's Chinese American community, which has traditionally viewed the flag as a symbol of the ...
