TEHRAN (FNA)- Head of the Iranian Space Agency (ISA) Morteza Barari announced on Sunday that three domestically-made satellites are ready to be launched. "Sharif University of Technology's Dousti satellite, the sensing-operational satellite of Amirkabir University and a communication satellite named Nahid are ready to launch," Barari said, addressing a meeting in Tehran. He also said that several other satellites are under construction, adding, "We have planned to build a sensing satellite with the precision of one meter by 2025." Iran in February 2017 unveiled two new home-made satellites of Nahid 1 and Amir Kabir as well as a space tug built for the first time ...
Video: Dwarf Planet Dubbed 'The Goblin' Discovered Post Date: 2018-10-07 07:01:49 by Tatarewicz

C2C... In the process of searching for signs of a massive planet thought to be lurking in our solar system, astronomers discovered a dwarf planet which they have dubbed 'The Goblin.' The rather diminutive object is believed to be around 186 miles wide and has an odd orbit that scientists suspect could be due to the influence of a larger celestial body colloquially known as 'Planet Nine.' The existence of this mysterious world, long the subject of speculation in paranormal and conspiracy circles, gained mainstream credibility back in 2014 when scientists theorized that movements of distant objects in the solar system were being caused by a massive and heretofore ...
New font Sans Forgetica designed to boost your memory Post Date: 2018-10-06 02:13:51 by Tatarewicz

During my early years at university, I was a terrible student. Uninterested, tired. Forgetful. It would have been handy to have a font specifically designed to help me alleviate the most pressing of those issues -- the fact that, going into a test, I'd have to write my lab notes over and over again, just to help me remember them. Enter Sans Forgetica. Researchers at the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology (RMIT) in Australia have developed an entirely new font designed "using the principles of cognitive psychology" to help you better remember your study notes. The font is a sans serif style typeface, with two unusual features: It slants slightly left, which is a rarely ...

What Cassini found as it plunged into Saturn a year ago By Ashley Strickland, CNN 5 hrs ago © NASA/JPL-Caltech A year after Cassini ended its 20-year mission to study Saturn, the last data the spacecraft recorded before plunging into the planet's atmosphere are revealing its long-held secrets. Cassini's sensors were recording until the last second during its "death dive," and all of the data were transmitted to NASA scientists on Earth before the spacecraft disintegrated. Over the past year, scientists have been analyzing the data. Saturn's magnetic field has long remained elusive, but Cassini's instruments allowed scientists to measure the planet's ...
Universe Aglow With Lyman-Alpha Emission Post Date: 2018-10-03 04:59:30 by Tatarewicz

TEHRAN (FNA)- Deep observations made with the MUSE spectrograph on ESO's Very Large Telescope have uncovered vast cosmic reservoirs of atomic hydrogen surrounding distant galaxies. The exquisite sensitivity of MUSE allowed for direct observations of dim clouds of hydrogen glowing with Lyman-alpha emission in the early Universe -- revealing that almost the whole night sky is invisibly aglow. An unexpected abundance of Lyman-alpha emission in the Hubble Ultra Deep Field (HUDF) region was discovered by an international team of astronomers using the MUSE instrument on ESO's Very Large Telescope (VLT. The discovered emission covers nearly the entire field of view -- leading the team ...
Plate Tectonics Active On Earth Since Beginning? Post Date: 2018-10-02 03:58:18 by Tatarewicz

TEHRAN (FNA)- A new study suggests that plate tectonics -- a scientific theory that divides the earth into large chunks of crust that move slowly over hot viscous mantle rock -- could have been active from the planet's very beginning. The new findings defy previous beliefs that tectonic plates were developed over the course of billions of years. The paper, published in Earth and Planetary Science Letters, has important implications in the fields of geochemistry and geophysics. For example, a better understanding of plate tectonics could help predict whether planets beyond our solar system could be hospitable to life. "Plate tectonics set up the conditions for life," said ...

As shocking as this revelation was, I was relieved his sexuality was the reason my parents divorced and that my dad hadnt left my mom to start another family that he loved more than ours. Still, I was confused. This was 1978, and there were no healthy representations of gay people in the media, and I had absolutely no idea what having a gay dad would mean for me. TEHRAN (FNA) UNSW and RMIT researchers have discovered a revolutionary and cheap way to make filters that can turn water contaminated with heavy metals into safe drinking water in a matter of minutes. Recent UNSW SHARP hire Professor Kourosh Kalantar-zadeh and his former colleagues at RMIT showed that nano-filters made of aluminium oxide could be cheaply produced using virtually no energy from a fixed amount of liquid metal gallium. In a paper published in Advanced Functional Materials, lead author Dr Ali Zavabeti (RMIT) and Professor Kalantar-zadeh explained that when a chunk of aluminium is added to the core of liquid gallium at room temperature, layers of aluminium oxide are quickly ...

Its likely that many of you reading this have had your cellphone bombarded at some point with spam calls that trick you into answering by spoofing a local number. The purpose being so that you dont see a 1-800 prefix or something similar that would let you know its not a real person. Those kinds of spoofed calls have seemed to multiply with no end in sight, basically leaving callers helpless to stop them beyond blocking each number or just never answering your phone when you see numbers you dont recognize. Thankfully, the FCC is finally moving to take action and has proposed a first-of-its-kind fine against one company accused of engaging in this practice. The proposed ...

Scientists Say They've Found The Driver of False Beliefs, And It's Not a Lack of Intelligence Post Date: 2018-09-17 02:24:54 by Tatarewicz

Why is it sometimes so hard to convince someone that the world is indeed a globe, or that climate change is actually caused by human activity, despite the overwhelming evidence? Scientists think they might have the answer, and it's less to do with lack of understanding, and more to do with the feedback they're getting. Getting positive or negative reactions to something you do or say is a greater influence on your thinking than logic and reasoning, the new research suggests so if you're in a group of like-minded people, that's going to reinforce your thinking. Receiving good feedback also encourages us to think we know more than we actually do. In other words, the ...

Mosaic Researchers at one of the UKs leading genetics centres tell us about their serendipitous findings. Science, mostly, progresses iteratively. But every now and then, a discovery will be made often incidental to the main aim of the research that is entirely unexpected. Such serendipitous findings enable us to leapfrog our usual incremental advances. They can even disrupt a whole field of research. In 2003, the Human Genome Project, the 13-year-long international effort to fully sequence human DNA and identify all our genes, was completed. The Wellcome Sanger Institute, near Cambridge, England, was the only British organisation involved, completing the sequence of ...
What Termites Can Teach Us Roboticists are fascinated by their “swarm intelligence,” biologists by their ability to turn grass into energy. But can humans replicate their achievements? Post Date: 2018-09-13 18:58:30 by Horse

Isoptera have capacities that synthetic biologists and roboticists alike seek to copy. Illustration by Mikel Jaso New termite colonies are founded on windless evenings, at dusk, after the rain. Most termites have neither eyes nor wings, but every mature colony has a caste of translucent-winged seeing creatures called alates, which are nurtured by the colonys workers until they are ready to propagate. When the time comesgiven the right temperature and humiditycolonies release thousands of alates into the air, an event called swarming. Most of the nutrient-rich alates are eaten by animals as they glide to the ground. The few that survive shed their wings and ...

The worst drought in years in the western half of the United States has sparked hundreds of wildfires, has crippled thousands of farms, and has produced what could ultimately be the worst water crisis in modern American history. As you will see below, Lake Powell and Lake Mead have both dropped to dangerously low levels, and officials are warning that we may soon be looking at a substantial shortfall which would require rationing. Unfortunately, many in the eastern half of the country dont even realize that this is happening. The mighty Colorado River once seemed to be virtually invulnerable, but now it doesnt even run all the way to the ocean any longer. Demand for water is ...

TEHRAN (FNA)- A new study used semi-artificial photosynthesis to explore new ways to produce and store solar energy. They used natural sunlight to convert water into hydrogen and oxygen using a mixture of biological components and human-made technologies. The quest to find new ways to harness solar power has taken a step forward after researchers successfully split water into hydrogen and oxygen by altering the photosynthetic machinery in plants. Photosynthesis is the process plants use to convert sunlight into energy. Oxygen is produced as by-product of photosynthesis when the water absorbed by plants is 'split'. It is one of the most important reactions on the planet because it ...
