Lighting our way to darkness: Scientists warn of too much ‘artificial light’ on Earth Post Date: 2017-11-23 07:34:46 by Tatarewicz

RT... A new study conducted using satellite data shows that artificial lighting is growing brighter. The data suggest this is disrupting the order of ecological and human life, which previously depended on natural light sources such as the moon. The international study led by Christopher Kyba of the GFZ German Research Centre for Geoscience tracks what researchers are calling a negative trend that has implications for the health of human beings and the environment. The light pollution that humans are creating can affect living things, because they have evolved in accordance with the normal day-night cycle, according to the study. This is due to the fact that major sources of light during ...
Explosive volcanic eruptions triggered by cosmic rays: Volcano as a bubble chamber Post Date: 2017-11-22 23:22:59 by Horse

Volcanoes with silica-rich and highly viscous magma tend to produce violent explosive eruptions that result in disasters in local communities and that strongly affect the global environment. We examined the timing of 11 eruptive events that produced silica-rich magma from four volcanoes in Japan (Mt. Fuji, Mt. Usu, Myojin-sho, and Satsuma-Iwo- jima) over the past 306 years (from AD 1700 to AD 2005). Nine of the 11 events occurred during inactive phases of solar magnetic activity (solar minimum), which is well indexed by the group sunspot number. This strong association between eruption timing and the solar minimum is statistically significant to a confidence level of 96.7%. This ...

Kim Dotcom, wanted in the US for alleged widespread illegal file sharing, has vowed to build an alternative internet to combat privacy and freedom problems online. The knowledge that government agencies have used the internet to spy on citizens, along with high-profile hacking scandals, has brought online privacy to the forefront of peoples minds. Megaupload founder Kim Dotcom says he will help facilitate an unobstructed internet, free from prying eyes, through MegaNet, which will operate without IP addresses. The German entrepreneur is currently resisting extradition to the US from New Zealand over alleged copyright infringement. Kim Dotcom ✔ @KimDotcom I have been ...

An algorithm that learns, tabula rasa, superhuman proficiency in challenging domains. AlphaGo Zero after 36 hours It is usual to distinguish between biological and machine intelligence, and for good reason: organisms have interacted with the world for millennia and survived, machines are a recent human construction, and until recently there was no reason to consider them capable of intelligent behaviour. Computers changed the picture somewhat, but until very recently artificial intelligence has been tried, and proved disappointing. As computers and programs increased in power and speed a defensive trope developed: a computer will never write a poem/enjoy strawberries/understand the ...
London buses to be powered by coffee to reduce emission Post Date: 2017-11-20 02:07:05 by Tatarewicz

LONDON, Nov. 20 (Xinhua) -- A coffee-based biofuel will be used to help power London's public buses from Monday in a bid to reduce transport emission, local media reported. Bio-bean, a London-based green-energy start-up, said it has produced enough coffee-derived biofuel to power one bus for a whole year, the BBC reported. The company collects waste coffee grounds mostly from London's coffee shops for processing, and tops the resulting coffee oil with a range of animal and vegetable oil. The final mix, consisting of 80 percent of diesel and 20 percent of biofuels, can reduce carbon emission from a bus journey by 10 percent to 15 percent, the AFP reported. The buses can be ...
HENRY FORD MADE A HEMP CAR IN 1941, BUT NO ONE KNOWS ABOUT IT Post Date: 2017-11-19 13:40:57 by Horse

As much as we like to think biodiesel is a modern breakthroughs, biofuel really isnt a new development at all. In the 1941 the first prototype car made from and fueled by hemp was constructed by Henry Ford. 70% of the cars body was made of industrial hemp and resin binder along with other cellulose fibres. Back in the 20th century marijuana was forbidden in order to suppress the inexpensive hemp fuel and fibre production, so that profits could be made by using petrol, all for tiny groups of people who wanted control and money. They knew that using hemp would withdraw our economic system and enable the majority of the population to return to wealth and power. Marijuana and hemp ...

Amid bad news, Lockheed takes victory lap in the Beltway bubble. WASHINGTON They call Washington a bubble. A la-la land. Home of the Deep State. A long-forgotten 1980s television series, Tales of the Darkside, once described a place that is just as real, but not as brightly lit as our own world. Sounds a bit like Capitol Hill. Nowhere was that more evident than yesterday, as defense industry giant Lockheed Martin hosted an auspiciously-timed reception on the Hill to tout its multi-billion dollar F-35 Joint Strike Fighter program, which as anyone reading in this space would know has been more than 16 years in development, and plagued by ...

NASA's Van Allen Probes Spot an Impenetrable Barrier in Space Two donuts of seething radiation that surround Earth, called the Van Allen radiation belts, have been found to contain a nearly impenetrable barrier that prevents the fastest, most energetic electrons from reaching Earth. A cloud of cold, charged gas around Earth, called the plasmasphere and seen here in purple, interacts with the particles in Earth's radiation belts shown in grey to create an impenetrable barrier that blocks the fastest electrons from moving in closer to our planet. Watch a giant crab mercilessly attack a full-grown bird and fuel your nightmares Mike Wehner, BGR News November 10, 2017 Crab and arthropods in general are often pretty creepy all on their own, but when you see one ruthlessly murdering (and eating!) a creature you would never expect, they get even more frightening. A newly-captured video of an island-dwelling giant crab brutalizing an innocent sea bird is probably one of the most disturbing thing youll see in quite some time, so enjoy, and do your best not to have nightmares. The creepy-crawly here is a coconut crab, so named because their size and remarkable pinching force allows them to slice open tasty coconuts and feast ...

Minister of Economic Affairs Shen Jong-chin has said the green energy rooftop program will be promoted through three approaches: Firstly starting from households and then expanding the program into the community, toward the goal of creating green energy cities; secondly, beginning with remote rural areas and Aboriginal tribal areas and state-run power plants; and thirdly by encouraging major industrial energy users to install solar panels to supply a certain percentage of ...
NASA Has More Evidence Volcanic Activity Is Heating Up Antarctica’s Ice Sheet Post Date: 2017-11-07 17:27:55 by Ada

Ancient underground streams of heated rock, called a mantle plume, might be an explanation for the instability of Antarcticas western ice sheet, according to a new NASA study. Scientists have been debating whether or not mantle plume heat contributes to western Antarcticas instability. Some recent studies provided evidence this might be the case, but even this studys authors were skeptical. I thought it was crazy, Hélène Seroussi, the studys co-author and scientist at NASAs Jet Propulsion Laboratory, said in a release. I didnt see how we could have that amount of heat and still have ice on top of it, Seroussi said ...

Rewriting history: Biblical eclipse sheds new light on pharaohs Post Date: 2017-10-30 08:23:35 by Ada

A mysterious event mentioned in the Bible was actually the oldest solar eclipse ever recorded, a new Cambridge study has found. The revelation may help to rewrite the dates of Egyptian pharaohs, including the famous Ramesses II. The celestial event described in the Old Testament Book of Joshua has been puzzling scholars for centuries. In the King James Bible, after Joshua led the Israelites into Canaan - a land which is now partly in modern Israel and Palestine - he prayed: Sun, stand still at Gibeon, and Moon, in the Valley of Aijalon. And the Sun stood still, and the Moon stopped, until the nation took vengeance on their enemies, the passage continued. Now, ...

A white male professor of philosophy has discovered that in order to have an academic career in these days he must find white privilege everywhere. Professor John Caputo, according to this report, has found white male privilege in reason itself. Reason, says Professor Caputo, is a white male Euro-Christian construction. Since reason is white, reason is not neutral. It implies that what is ...
Kaspersky Software Caught Classified NSA Malware Post Date: 2017-10-26 07:43:09 by Ada

Russian Company Vilified Because Its Software Did Its Job Russian anti-virus company Kaspersky Lab has been increasingly vilified in the US for acquiring classified US government programs. This hs led to a full ban on Kaspersky software on federal PCs, and several retails dropping the wildly popular program. Kaspersky Labs own internal investigation into the matter revealed that was indeed the case, in as much as its antivirus software accidentally swept up NSA malware and its adjoining source code during a 2014 malware scan, even though that malware was itself classified. This means, however, that the antivirus software was doing exactly what it was supposed to do, ...

The company plans to begin the code review before the end of the year and establish a process for conducting ongoing reviews, of both the updates it makes to software and the threat-detection rules it uses to detect malware and upload suspicious files from customer machines. The latter refers to signatures and so-called Yara rules, ...
The universe shouldn't exist, scientists say after finding bizarre behaviour of anti-matter Post Date: 2017-10-24 07:20:37 by Ada

We don't know why the universe isn't destroying itself Our universe shouldn't exist, scientists say. The most elite scientists in the world are still struggling to find why exactly our universe didn't destroy itself as soon as it came into existence. That's what science says should have happened but it clearly hasn't, since you're here reading this, as far as we know. At the beginning of the universe, according to the standard model, there equal amounts of matter and anti-matter. The trouble with that is that they would each have annihilated each other, leaving none of the matter that surrounds us today. Nasa's most stunning pictures of space 30 ...
