Mycorrhizal Fungi: The World’s Biggest Drinking Straws And Largest Unseen Communication System Post Date: 2018-08-18 22:24:42 by Horse

Quick, which is the biggest symbiotic association on Earth? Did you guess the mycorrhizae? They are the huge symbioses between fungi and the roots of most terrestrial plants. Their total size is not easy to measure because not all the fungal filaments in soils are mycorrhizal nor are the mycorrhizal ones always mycorrhizing (a new verb?). Even so, one can make the case that the combined mass of the participating fungi and plant roots is colossal. A friend, the soil microbiologist David Lipson, tells me that the mass of mycorrhizal fungi on the planet is estimated to be somewhere around 1-3 x 1010 tons (thats between 1.4 and 4 tons per person). We are obviously talking about a topic ...

Pushes corporate news collusion to silence independent media Remember the day you found out Google was steeped in pure evil? So you sought out a different browser to escape the evil overlords that run Chrome. Many of us sought out Firefox from Mozilla, an organization with a strong history supporting free speech and open access to information. But now Mozilla has joined the dark side. Theyre jumping in bed with pure evil, pushing an Information Trust Initiative that would block independent media sources at the browser level while favoring corporate media giants like CNN, a cesspool of deliberately fake news. Surprised? You shouldnt be. The Mozilla ...

There are now five different lines of observational evidence pointing to the existence of Planet Nine," said Konstantin Batygin, a planetary astrophysicist at Caltech in Pasadena. Some of these clues relate to the gravitational tug of Planet Nine, which appears to be disturbing the distant Kuiper Belt, which is made up of icy objects and stretches from Neptune out into deep space. Its believed Planet Nine is a "super-Earth", the name for a type of large world which appears to be very common in ...
Scientists create mineral to absorb CO2 from atmosphere Post Date: 2018-08-18 00:22:25 by Tatarewicz

NEW YORK, Aug. 15 (Xinhua) -- Scientists have found a rapid way of creating magnesite, a mineral that can absorb carbon dioxide from the atmosphere, offering a potential solution to global warming. The research, presented recently at the Goldschmidt geochemistry conference in Boston, explained how magnesite can form at low temperatures and offered a way to dramatically accelerate its crystallization. Magnesite is a naturally occurring rock used in jewelery and for various industrial processes. Every ton of magnesite is capable of removing about half a ton of CO2 from the air. However, the process normally takes thousands of years in nature at Earth's surface. In the lab, the ...

Debunking the Myth that the Moon Landing Was a Hoax By Donald Sinclair Updated July 21, 2014 14:29 BST One of the few photographs of Neil Armstrong on the moon shows him working on his space craft on the lunar surface Nasa Forty five years ago today, for the first time in history humanity existed on two worlds at the same time. On Earth, approximately 1 in 7 of the 3.6 billion people on its surface was watching two people step out onto the Moon. This moment followed an eight year space race, a 3 day journey to a lunar orbit, a two and a half hour descent that nearly had to be aborted at the last minute, and what you can only imagine was a uniquely tense 7 hour wait in the lunar ...

Positron Dynamics is out to make space travel to distant stars a reality using antimatter. Antimatter is the most energy-dense material known. Positrons are the easiest form of antimatter to produce. With physics that is understood today, any hopes of traveling beyond the edge of the Solar System can only be realized with antimatter. To get there, our first steps lie in Earths orbit.
Inside Space Shuttle Challenger STS-51L During The Accident (Higher Quality) Post Date: 2018-08-16 06:43:35 by BTP Holdings

On January 28, 1986 despite the warnings of engineers not to launch in freezing temperatures, NASA management chose to launch Space Shuttle Challenger. The result was the loss of 7 astronauts in a horrific explosion 73 seconds later when flames from a solid rocket booster leak from a cracked o-ring and burned through the main fuel tank. The solid rocket boosters remained intact after the explosion and continued on out of control before mission control sent a self destruct signal to them so they could not cause destruction on the ground. This video gives a detailed and technical explanation of the entire Challenger accident including pre-launch assembly, launch, post-launch, and accident ...

Smart Gun Pioneer Markets Product as Safety Option That Wont Add Regulations By: Robert Davis Biofire Technologies founder Kai Kloepfer says smart guns are a way of making firearms safer without placing new regulatory burdens on the gun market. Smart guns still in the prototype stage require fingerprint authentication to be operated, much like a smartphone. An advanced fingerprint sensor built into the smart gun reads your fingerprint when you pick up the firearm to make sure that the owner has allowed you to use it, Biofires website states. Each smart gun can register as many users as you need. You have ...
Dark Energy May Be Incompatible With String Theory Post Date: 2018-08-14 04:21:16 by Tatarewicz

A controversial new paper argues that universes with dark energy profiles like ours do not exist in the landscape of universes allowed by string theory. 33 Art for "Dark Energy May Be Incompatible With String Theory" String theory permits a landscape of possible universes, surrounded by a swampland of logically inconsistent universes. In all of the simple, viable stringy universes physicists have studied, the density of dark energy is either diminishing or has a stable negative value, unlike our universe, which appears to have a stable positive value. When mercury is added to aluminum, it forms an amalgam (a mercury alloy). Aluminum is normally protected by a thick oxide layer, but the formation of the amalgam disrupts it. It allows fresh aluminum to react with air to form white aluminum oxide. As the oxide grows, it forms as these cool white fibers.

Kennedy Space Center, May 14th 2010. I was privileged to travel to the Kennedy Space Center, to watch the launch of Atlantis, on what was then, the final "scheduled" flight of the orbiter (STS-132). This video is my homage to the shuttle program, through the in depth experience of a single orbiter launch. I believe we should be thankful for the Atlantis orbiter, all her astronauts, the countless NASA staff who made her fly, and the American people who created a space vehicle of extraordinary power and grace. This footage incorporates numerous camera views from the ground, footage I took during launch, and video and audio from NASA showing the orbiter stack itself, during ...
10 INCREDIBLE Space Launch Failures! [4K] Post Date: 2018-08-11 13:09:52 by BTP Holdings

Space launch is the earliest part of a flight that reaches space. Space launch involves liftoff, when a rocket or other space launch vehicle leaves the ground, floating ship or midair aircraft at the start of a flight. Liftoff is of two main types: rocket launch (the current conventional method), and non-rocket spacelaunch (where other forms of propulsion are employed, including airbreathing jet engines or other kinds). Rocket launch is the only current way to reach space. In some cases an airbreathing (jet engine) first stage has been used as well.Non-rocket space launch is a launch into space where some or all of the needed speed and altitude are provided by something other than ...

Major changes are happening to our planet, and the experts are groping for answers. In recent days some have suggested that what we are witnessing is the natural progression of man-made climate change, but that explanation has generally been received with a lot of skepticism. Something truly dramatic appears to be happening to the globe, and it isnt just because the amount of carbon dioxide in the air suddenly reached some sort of magical tipping point. But without a doubt, temperatures are getting warmer. In July, Death Valley experienced the hottest month ever recorded on the planet. Over in Europe, Saturday was being billed as Europes ...
