naturalmedicine@advancedalternativenews.com> Advanced Natural Wellness One thing we all take for granted is the water that comes out of our tap. But ask the folks in Flint, MI, and they'll tell you it's not a good idea to believe it when officials tell you your water is safe. You see, back in 2014 the city turned to the Flint River as a main source of water. This decision exposed residents to all sorts of unhealthy pollutants every time they enjoyed a glass of water from their faucet, took a shower, or enjoyed a relaxing soak in the tub. Right off the bat, fecal coliform bacteria and other disease-causing organisms entered the public water supply. And when officials tried to ...

Telegraph... Skinny patients are far more likely to die after common heart treatments than those who are overweight, a major study suggests. Research on more than 1 million adults found those who were underweight were five times as likely as obese patients to die after a routine cardiac procedure. Obese patients fared even better than those of normal weight, the study found, in a phenomenon dubbed “the obesity paradox”. The findings, presented at the European Society of Cardiology Congress in Barcelona, come from a US study which tracked patients for 30 days after their procedure. All had undergone cardiac procedures used to investigate and unblock narrowed arteries. Around 10 ...

The new feature, developed in conjunction with the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI), will be fully rolled out on mobile in the US in the coming days. When users search the term, a ‘knowledge panel’ offering information on the disorder will appear along with an option to “check if you’re clinically depressed,” according to a Google blog post. © Google The clinically validated PHQ-9 questionnaire will assess an individual’s likely level of depression and the ...

The Real Cause of America's Opioid Epidemic

The Opioid epidemic is spreading across the heartland of America. The number of drug overdose deaths from both prescription (e.g., Oxycontin) and black market (e.g., heroin) opiates exceeded 30,000 in 2015. Initial estimates for 2016 indicate yet another new record of deaths. It is such an enormous problem that I taught a special class on it at our undergraduate instructional conference, Mises University, which you can listen to here. Recently the Commission on Combating the Opioid Crisis issued a preliminary report and recommended that the president declare a national emergency. From 2002 to 2015 the number of such deaths has increased by 280%. The chart below shows that prescription ...

Sci-alert A nation-wide study in Denmark has unearthed a surprising new link between the levels of naturally occurring lithium in drinking water and the incidence of dementia. Dementia is one of the biggest causes of disability in elderly people worldwide, with 9.9 million new cases happening every year, but there's still a lot we don't know about what causes the syndrome and how to prevent it. These new results suggest that adding lithium to tap water could be a future health intervention. Lithium, the third element in the periodic table, isn't just the stuff that powers batteries in most of our electronic devices. Trapped in various minerals, this light metal is scattered ...

Sci-alert... A common class of antiseptic found in everything from mouthwash to spermicides has been found to impair the workings of our cells' mitochondria – the parts of the cell that convert glucose into other forms of chemical energy. Concerns over the class of antimicrobial agents called quaternary ammonium compound has been so great, the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has already banned one of the chemicals from certain products and asked for more information on another. Researchers from the University of California, Davis, tested two common forms of quaternary ammonium salts called cetylpyridinium chloride (CPC) and benzalkonium chloride (BAK) on human tissues ...

U.S. researchers said Wednesday that they have developed a new test that identified more than half of 138 people with relatively early-stage colorectal, breast, lung and ovarian cancers by detecting tiny amounts of DNA circulating in the blood that originate from tumors. "This study shows that identifying cancer early using DNA changes in the blood is feasible and that our high accuracy sequencing method is a promising approach to achieve this goal," said Victor Velculescu, professor of oncology at the Johns Hopkins Kimmel Cancer Center, whose study was published in the U.S. journal Science Translational Medicine. Blood tests for cancer are a growing part of clinical oncology, ...

Sci-alert... If the absolute worst were to happen and a nuclear conflict erupted close to where you live, it's vital to know what to do. And what not to do. Simmering nuclear tensions in the past week have thrown apocalypse survival tactics back into the spotlight, and with them, a rather unusual emergency factoid: if a nuclear blast happens, you really, really should refrain from using hair conditioner. It might sound a little crazy, because after all, priorities people! As one online commenter put it, "like Imma be worried about bounce and body when the sky is literally on fire". They've got a point. But the reason we shouldn't condition our hair is less to do ...

New Research Shakes Idea That Having Pets Is Better For Kids' Health

Sci-alert... Can having a pet improve your health? It's a question that's fascinated scientists and pet owners for years, but the latest research seems to suggest that no, maybe it can't. The study showed that children in households who had cats and dogs were healthier overall in a number of ways – but after accounting for controlling factors, it also showed that the cats and dogs were unlikely to be the reason why. The findings are a counter argument to many other studies that have found a link between pets and healthiness, but members of the team from the RAND Corporation, a research nonprofit, say they were surprised by the results too. "We could not find ...

China-born clones bring pig organs closer for human transplants

(Xinhua) KUNMING, Aug. 11 -- Scientists have cloned genetically modified piglets that may prove a safe source of organs for transplants into humans. The 15 black-headed piglets, born in a lab in southwest China's Yunnan Province, do not carry the active infectious viral gene which has impeded the process of pig-to-human transplantation for more than a decade, said Chinese members of an international research team who released their findings Friday. Pigs have porcine endogenous retroviruses (PERVs) embedded in their genome. These viruses are able to jump from a pig cell to a human when mixed in the lab. The viruses can then be passed to fresh human cells from the infected one. This ...

(Xinhua) Dozens of U.S. cities, counties and states are suing major U.S. pharmaceutical companies amid the worst drug addiction epidemic in U.S. history, accusing the companies of spurring a major health crisis. Many of the lawsuits allege that the U.S. pharmaceutical industry went on an aggressive marketing campaign and downplayed the highly addictive nature of opioids, a powerful class of prescription drugs that has the same chemical properties as heroin, and in fact comes from the same plant. The plaintiffs in the cases claim this spurred a national health and addiction crisis. Indeed, since the year 2000, the United States saw over 300,000 deaths due to opioids, which have also ...

Doctors Remove Brace Wire From Woman's Intestine By Gayathri Anuradha 08/08/17 AT 1:29 AM When a 30-year-old woman visited the emergency room of Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital in Western Australia complaining of increasing abdominal pain, the best guess of the doctors there was it was a bad case of gall stones. However, a CT scan showed something unexpected and worrisome — a foreign object lodged in the small intestine, and which had punctured its walls. In the unusual case published Monday in the medical journal BMJ Case Reports, surgery revealed the woman had swallowed a seven-centimeter long dental wire, which had been lodged there for the last 10 years, possibly ...
