SYDNEY, Feb. 10 (Xinhua) -- An Australian pharmaceutical company has successfully prevented the progression of Diabetic Kidney Disease (DKD) for the first time. DKD is an often fatal long-term complication of type 2 diabetes which is the most common cause of severe renal disease. It affects one third of people with type 2 diabetes and has no viable treatment until now. An international team of scientists in collaboration with Melbourne-based global biotechnology leader CSL Limited investigated a therapeutic approach that targets the transport of fatty acids, or lipids, from the blood into tissues to treat DKD. Using 2H10, an antibody developed by CSL, the researchers were able to block ...

The Legalization Cure for the Heroin Epidemic

A heroin epidemic has been spreading across the United States, expanding enormously for the last several years. With it, the number of people dying has also increased dramatically. While politicians offer failed solutions like “securing the borders,” the real solution is to legalize drugs. The number of drug overdoses in the US is approaching 50,000 per year. Of that number nearly 20,000 are attributed to legal painkillers, such as Oxycontin. More than 10,000 die of heroin overdoses. I believe these figures vastly underestimate the number of deaths that are related to prescription drug use. The “face” of the heroin epidemic has changed since the 1960s when it was ...

People'sDaily... The Mediterranean diet can provide significant help to those suffering from severe depression, Australian researchers have discovered. Mediterranean diet has long been known to have significant physical health benefits. Now researchers from Melbourne's Deakin University have discovered that it can also help those suffering mental health issues. The team from Deakin put dozens of patients with major depressive disorders on a Mediterranean-style diet rich in protein, legumes, fresh fruit and vegetables, olive oil and nuts. After 12 weeks of health eating, researchers said that one third of the participants reported a significant improvement in their mood and ...

The case was referred to the Regional Review Committee in the Netherlands It concluded that the female doctor had effectively acted in good faith The Netherlands introduced the euthanasia law 17 years ago A Dutch woman doctor who drugged an elderly woman and then asked her family to hold her down as she fought desperately not to be killed did not break the law, according to medical experts citing the country's euthanasia legislation. The shocking case was referred to the so-called Regional Review Committee in the Netherlands which admitted that while the case involved some irregularities that merited a reprimand, the female doctor had effectively acted in good faith. However they ...

Why Hasn’t Obamacare Been Repealed?

The Republicans have talked about repealing it since the day it was passed. They voted many times in Congress to repeal it. They now have absolute control of the government. They could have had a bill already drafted to repeal Obamacare and put it on Trump’s desk his first day in office. Oh, people say, but they need more time; give them a chance. We have given them a thousand chances too many already. They have failed again. Remember the 11th commandment: Never trust the Republicans.

Ablation' Procedure Helps 3 out of 4 Patients With Irregular Heartbeat

WEDNESDAY, Jan. 25, 2017 (HealthDay News) -- Just how successful is the procedure called catheter ablation at fixing irregular heartbeats that can be potentially fatal? Pretty successful, a new study found, but there are caveats. Burning or freezing specific areas of the heart can alleviate the common irregular heart beat called atrial fibrillation in 74 percent of patients. However, the procedure doesn't work for everyone and there are risks of complications, researchers report. Atrial fibrillation increases the risk of early death by two times in women and 1.5 times in men. It causes 20 to 30 percent of all strokes and can decrease quality of life due to palpitations, shortness ...

Effortless fat loss could soon be a reality thanks to roundworms

RT... A team of researchers in California have discovered the exact hormone that triggers fat to burn, using roundworms as their test subjects. If they can replicate their results in humans this could be a game changer for fat loss. “Serotonin, a central neuromodulator with ancient ties to feeding and metabolism, is a major driver of body fat loss. However, mechanisms by which central serotonin action leads to fat loss remain unknown,” the study’s abstract states. While scientists have long been aware of a connection between serotonin and fat loss, the scientific community had yet to determine exactly how the process worked - and whether it could be triggered without any ...

Being overweight is not healthy, no matter what your age. However, recent research suggests that lack of exercise among senior citizens with too much extra weight may well be risking more than their physical health. They may be risking their cognitive functions, too. The study, conducted at Seoul National University Hospital Healthcare System in Korea, tested volunteers age 60 and older to determine whether brain skills may be affected by having excess body fat.1 The researchers calculated the body mass index (BMI) for the 250 participants as well as took the measurements of their waist circumferences and imaging of the abdominal area to detect fat stores. Then, the volunteers were given ...

CBC... Marble statues of Venus and Mars in Rome's Chigi Premier's Palace. A new review provides insights on what's considered normal for penis length and circumference in men. (Andrew Medichini/Associated Press) The question of what's a normal sized penis now has a well-informed answer. Doctors searched through 17 published studies on more than 15,000 men who had their penis size measured by a health professional and graphed the averages in Tuesday's issue of BJU International, formerly the British Journal of Urology. The graphs will help doctors reassure the large majority of men that their penis size is in the normal range, said study author Dr. David Veale, of ...

Why you shouldn't treat earwax without seeing a doctor

CBC... Roughly one in 10 children and more than one third of elderly people have excessive earwax buildup Patients should see a doctor if they experience hearing loss, pain or feel fullness in their ears or aren't certain whether the amount of wax is normal. It may be tempting to clean your ears with Q-tips or try ear candling to clear away any clogs, but it's best to check with a professional before taking matters into your own hands, doctors advise. "Patients may try to blindly instrument their ears with cotton ear buds, bobby pins, or other tools," said Dr. Seth Schwartz, chair of a committee that drafted new guidelines for diagnosing and treating earwax for the ...

Should Everyone Have Health Insurance?

“We’re going to have insurance for everybody.” ~ Donald Trump Donald Trump is not alone. The majority of politicians in Congress (of either party) and private citizens (of any political persuasion) believe that everyone should have health insurance. What they disagree on is who should pay for it, what it should cover, what deductible it should have, what limits it should have, and whether the government should require people to have it. Right now the individual mandate of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (PPACA)—Obamacare—requires that every American have health insurance or pay a penalty, unless he is covered by Medicaid, Medicare, an Indian Health ...

Monsanto denied the research, which was published in the journal Nature. Image courtesy Monsanto Jan. 21 (UPI) -- British scientists conducting a long term study found a link between exposure to the popular weed killer Roundup and severe liver damage in test rats. The study, published in the journal Nature, was completed at King's College London, where researchers concluded even in "extremely low doses," rats exposed to Roundup through their drinking water developed non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, or NAFLD, over a two-year period. ...

ScienceAlert... Charities, governments, and scientists from across the world gathered in Switzerland on Thursday to hammer out a plan of action to stop three of the world’s most potentially devastating diseases from turning into full-blown, global epidemics. And the diseases they're focussing on aren't the headline-makers you might expect. The three disease targets are: Middle Eastern Respiratory Syndrome (MERS), Lassa fever, and the Nipah virus (NiV) – all of which are highly contagious, and currently have no vaccines or treatments in the pipelines. The plan of attack, according to the announcement made by the Coalition for Epidemic Preparedness Innovations (CEPI) on ...

WebMD... April 7, 2014 -- The studies just keep coming. Sitting our life away, it seems, may be very bad for our health and even our life expectancy. Just since January, researchers have reported that sitting for long hours is linked to: Worse mental health A higher risk of death from heart disease and other causes A higher risk of being disabled The new studies add even more weight to earlier research suggesting that too much sitting is bad -- even if you get regular exercise. Experts say they still don't know for sure which comes first. Does too much sitting trigger poor health, or is it the other way around? They also say we may need to think about sitting and exercise as two ...

People's Pharmacy... Q. I have heard that if you place pieces of eggplant in water for a couple of hours and then drink the water it helps reduce cholesterol levels and blood pressure. Is this correct or do I have to put the eggplant in the fridge for four days and drink a small amount daily? A. Several years ago a reader sent in the following remedy: “Wash but don’t peel a medium eggplant. Dice it into 1-inch cubes. “Place the cubes in a glass gallon jug and cover the eggplant with distilled water. “Put the jug in the fridge for four days. Drink one ounce of the water per day, taking your blood pressure daily. “After a week or so, the eggplant will begin ...

Aust'n researchers discover key to prolonging life of cancer-fighting cells

Australian researchers have discovered how to prolong the life of the human body's disease-fighting cells, buying more time for cancer patients. Researchers from Melbourne's Walter and Eliza Hall Institute of Medical Research (WEHI) working with a team from France's Centre of Immunology discovered that the BCL-2 protein was particularly important in controlling the reservoir of natural killer (NK) cells in the body. Nick Huntington, the lead researcher from WEHI, said the team discovered the importance of BCL-2 by investigating factors that control NK cell function. "We have been very interested in understanding which factors control the lifespan of NK cells," ...

Painkiller breakthrough: Experts said they have found a painkiller as strong as morphine but without the side effects Morphine and morphine-like drugs - such as oxycodone, fentanyl and buprenorphine - are the strongest painkillers there are. Some come as a patch, but they all work in similar ways and experts warn they should only be used for severe pain. They will only be prescribed after consultation with your GP or a pain specialist. However, Catherine Rougeot, Director of Research at Institut Pasteur, looked into the ...

WASHINGTON, Jan. 15 (UPI) -- Kentucky Sen. Rand Paul on Sunday said the GOP replacement for the Affordable Care Act, also known as Obamacare, is aimed to "give access to the most amount of people, at the least amount of cost." Paul made the comment during an interview on CNN's State of the Union. "One of the key reforms that we will do is, we're going to legalize the sale of inexpensive insurance," Paul said. "That means getting rid of the Obamacare mandates on what you can buy. We are going to help people save through health savings accounts, as well as a tax credit." Paul said young people are not purchasing insurance through the ACA because ...

Trumpcare Nears Completion

Trumpcare Nears Completion by Stephen Lendman In a Saturday Washington Post interview, Trump said Obamacare will be replaced by “insurance for everybody,” without explaining specifics of his plan, while vowing to negotiate a better deal on drug prices for Medicare and Medicaid. Big Pharma is “politically protected, but not anymore,” he said. Market-based medicine works for business at the expense of affordable patient care. It leaves millions of Americans uninsured, most others underinsured. Obamacare works this way, Trumpcare when revealed likely worse. A previous article discussed his earlier seven-point industry-enriching plan. It’s long on cost reduction, ...

According to a new report from the US Preventive Services Task Force - an independent, volunteer-driven panel of health experts - anyone who is capable of getting pregnant should be taking folic acid supplements ...
