ScienceAlert... A whole lot of people use herbal remedies with the assumption that even if they don't work, they're not really doing any harm. But a new journal article offers a timely reminder that that's not always the case. In fact, one of the most commonly used herbal remedies, Aristolochia (AKA birthwort or Dutchman's pipe), has been shown to trigger kidney failure and cancer in roughly 5-10 percent of the population, who have a genetic susceptibility to one of its compounds. Aristolochia is a genus of plant that's been used for more than 2,500 years as a cure-all alternative medicine, treating things as diverse as "snakebite, head wounds, insomnia, ...

CANBERRA, May 6 (Xinhua) -- Australian researches believe "starving" cancer cells could be the key to prevent the growth of tumors, paving the way for the development of new cancer-beating drugs. Scientists at the Australian National University (ANU) in Canberra announced the breakthrough on Friday, in which they found and blocked a vital "supply route" that cancer cells use to obtain nutrients and grow. Professor Stefan Bröer from the ANU Research School of Biology said his team identified the "gateways" through which cancer cells "feed", blocked them and then found the cells almost completely stopped growing, in a discovery which could ...

Intestinal worms boost immune system in a surprising way Post Date: 2016-05-06 04:30:17 by Tatarewicz

ScienceDaily... In order to fight invading pathogens, the immune system uses "outposts" throughout the body, called lymph nodes. These are small, centimeter-long organs that filter fluids, get rid of waste materials, and trap pathogens, e.g. bacteria or viruses. Lymph nodes are packed with immune cells, and are know to grow in size, or 'swell', when they detect invading pathogens. But now, EPFL scientists have unexpectedly discovered that lymph nodes also contain more immune cells when the host is infected with a more complex invader: an intestinal worm. The discovery is published in Cell Reports , and has significant implications for our understanding of how the immune ...

ScienceAlert... Its estimated that nine out of 10 women suffer from period pain each month, and an unfortunate 10 percent of those will get it so bad, they could be incapacitated for up to three days. Other than using contraceptives to skip their period altogether (just like astronauts do), menstruating women have precious few options to beat this thing and get on with their lives. Some over-the-counter pain-killers and a strategically placed hot water bottle is about it. But theres another option behind secret door #3, and early reports are saying this thing actually works. Dubbed Livia, this new medical device claims to be an "off switch for menstrual pain". ...
Why We Sleep So Poorly In Unfamiliar Places Post Date: 2016-05-06 01:10:17 by X-15

Many of us have trouble sleeping in an unfamiliar place, like a hotel, or a friends house for the first time. When we finally do get to sleep, its often fidgety and disturbed. New research shows that one hemisphere of our brain stays more active during the first night of sleepand it does so to keep us ready for trouble. Its a phenomenon scientists refer to as the first-night-effect. A neuroimaging study by Brown University researchers reveals that, under these first night conditions, one hemisphere of the brain stays alert. This half-asleep, half-awake state may work as a way to monitor unfamiliar surroundings, study co-author ...
Was Hitler right about smoking tobacco products? Post Date: 2016-05-05 04:59:07 by Tatarewicz

One topic on which Hitler was unmistakably correct was the dangers of smoking. Hitler considered smoking a disgusting habit and forbid smoking in any of his headquarters complexes (much to the dismay of his advisers, SS personnel, and military leaders). He further spoke on the negative health effects of smoking, was of the opinion that smoking damaged the lungs, and was most likely the cause of several terminal diseases. Bear in mind, this was the 1940s when everyone smoked, there was little science yet on nicotine addiction and lung cancer, nor was anti-smoking sentiment very widespread. In this aspect Hitler was way ahead of his time.
Vitamin stops the aging process of organs Nicotinamide riboside rejuvenates stem cells, allowing better regeneration processes in aged mice Post Date: 2016-05-05 04:37:31 by Tatarewicz

ScienceDaily... Nicotinamide riboside (NR) is pretty amazing. It has already been shown in several studies to be effective in boosting metabolism. And now a team of researchers at EPFL's Laboratory of Integrated Systems Physiology (LISP), headed by Johan Auwerx, has unveiled even more of its secrets. An article written by Hongbo Zhang, a PhD student on the team, was published today in Science and describes the positive effects of NR on the functioning of stem cells. These effects can only be described as restorative. As mice, like all mammals, age, the regenerative capacity of certain organs (such as the liver and kidneys) and muscles (including the heart) diminishes. Their ability to ...

ScienceAlert... In a controversial move, a US biotechnology company has been given permission to recruit 20 clinically dead patients and try to bring their central nervous system back to life. If they can successfully reanimate parts of the upper spinal cord, where the lower brain stem is located, theres a possibility that they could kickstart vital body functions such as breathing and heartbeats - something these patients can only do with the help of machines. "This represents the first trial of its kind and another step towards the eventual reversal of death in our lifetime," CEO of Bioquark Inc., Ira Pastor, told Sarah Knapton at The Telegraph. Some people mistakenly think that pistachios are a "fattening" food... but despite having loads of healthy fats, these yummy little snacks can actually HELP you to burn off stomach fat. Let's see why... Do you remember eating pistachios when they used to be dyed a deep pinkish/red? They were always so delicious, but after eating a bunch of those bright "red" nuts, your fingers and hands would be stained red. Pistachios, as we now know, do not grow as magenta-colored nuts but come in a nice natural tan colored shell with a mild-tasting, crunchy, green and yellow interior. Nuts have risen in popularity lately, but did you know that pistachios are probably one of ...
Scientists find 69 different factors that control your gut bacteria Post Date: 2016-05-04 05:07:34 by Tatarewicz

Science Alert... Deep within our bowels, there's a flourishing, miniature ecosystem called the gut microbiome - a delicate balance of bacteria that has a big say on our health and digestive system. Now scientists in Belgium have identified 69 different factors - from chocolate to contraceptives - that influence the make-up of our gut microbiomes. It's not just what we ingest either: sleep, habits, and lifestyle can all have an impact on our internal balance of bacteria as well. The researchers hope that the study will lead to a better understanding of these microbiota, how we keep them healthy and how we treat diseases in this part of the body. As Jessica Hamzelou at New ...

Lest you assume those cases are the exceptions, a new study by patient safety researchers provides some context. Does the 'G-spot' really exist? Post Date: 2016-05-03 05:17:01 by Tatarewicz
11 Comments
ScienceAlert... It is perhaps one of the most controversial debates in sexual function: is there or isnt there a G-spot? And if there is, how do we find it? The G-spot is a purported highly erogenous area of the vagina that, when stimulated, may lead to strong sexual arousal and orgasm. Although the concept of vaginal orgasms has been around since the 17th century, the term G-spot wasnt coined until the 1980s. The G-spot is named after Eric Grafenberg, a German gynaecologist, whose 1940s research documented this sensitive region within the vagina in some women. The controversy surrounding the G-spot comes about because there is no consensus over just what the G-spot is, and ...
