Strongly supported by the Brady Campaign Against Gun Violence, you can expect to hear some questions under the guise of a public health agenda. Describing her efforts in the panel, Kartzburg said, “We are hoping to forge a national coalition of partners to push the agenda of a public health approach to gun violence prevention forward.” The Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence president Dan Gross echoed Kartzburg’s sentiment and ...

In patients with mild Alzheimer's disease (AD), consumption of moderate amounts of alcohol is associated with a lower risk for death than those who drink only occasionally, a new analysis has shown. The researchers found that those who reported drinking two to three units of alcohol a day had a 77% lower mortality rate compared with those drinking one or less than one drink per day. "That's huge," study author Frans Boch Waldorff, Research Unit for General Practice, Department of Public Health, University of Southern Denmark, Odense C, Denmark, told Medscape Medical News. Still, it's not enough to support a recommendation that patients with AD start drinking ...

Why you are almost certain to be magnesium-deficient Posted on December 15, 2015 by Bob Livingston Magnesium is required by all the body’s major organs in order for them to function properly. Low magnesium levels contribute to heart disease and cardiac arrest, depression, kidneys stones, muscle cramps and twitching, nervous system problems, low kidney function, and a host of other problems. In all likelihood, your magnesium levels are dangerously low. There was time when most of the magnesium the body needed was found in the foods we ate. But the nutrition provided by the crops we consume has declined significantly since then. According to a study published in 2004 in the Journal ...

MELBOURNE, Dec. 11 (Xinhua) -- In a two-year world-first trial, Western Australian (WA) police and mental health workers will join forces to provide better help to mental health sufferers -- while reducing the time police spend on this growing problem. The trial, announced in Perth on Friday, will result in mental health workers and officers working alongside each other from January next year, and identifying those cases which should be dealt with by mental health experts. In 2014-15, WA police attended 17,500 mental health call-outs, more than three times the number recorded in 2007. With the sheer volume of mental health matters in WA, officers currently take the patient to a ...

Compound found in herbs, spices boosts brain connections

"Strong connections between neurons are crucial for good brain function, memory consolidation and learning," said neuroscientist Stevens Rehen. RIO DE JANEIRO, Dec. 10 (UPI) -- According to new research out of Brazil, a naturally occurring flavonoid called apigenin boosts neuron formation and connections between brain cells. Apigenin is found in parsley, thyme, chamomile and red pepper. Previous studies have suggested flavonoids work to protect and strengthen brain function, but the latest lab tests are the first to prove the positive effects of apigenin directly on human brain cells -- and the first to show the mechanism for flavonoids' brain-boosting powers. The new ...

Scientists have figured out how a parasite transmitted by cats may alter our behaviour

ScienceAlert... A common parasite often transmitted via cat litter and hosted by up to 80 percent of people poses no threat to most of us, but it can cause serious complications for pregnant women or those with compromised immune systems. Fortunately, a new study by researchers in Australia has figured out how the parasite, Toxoplasma gondii, captures host cells and stockpiles food to keep itself alive, and the discovery could enable treatments that help us beat this uninvited guest. In human infections, Toxoplasma requires a human host cell, such as a neuron, to set up house in. To enable its own growth and survival, the parasite hijacks this host cell and can then hibernate for decades ...

Common prostate cancer treatment may double Alzheimer's risk

While researchers said androgen deprivation therapy does not necessarily cause Alzheimer's disease, a new study suggests low levels of testosterone contribute to the development of it. Previous studies have shown male Alzheimer's disease patients have lower levels of testosterone, so ADT being linked to Alzheimer's diagnoses is not surprising to researchers who conducted the new study. STANFORD, Calif., Dec. 9 (UPI) -- Androgen deprivation therapy, or ADT, is one of the primary methods of treating prostate cancer because of the role testosterone plays in tumor growth. New research shows the treatment also doubles the risk for a diagnosis of Alzheimer's disease. ADT has ...

This holiday, how about buying a home blood pressure monitor for someone you love who's being treated for hypertension? About one in every three people has high blood pressure, including about 65 percent of people 60 and older. Consumer Reports rates these medical devices, which you can pick up at most drugstores for $40 to $130. A highly rated device, a Best Buy, was $60, and another Best Buy was just $40. People with hypertension or suspected high blood pressure should routinely monitor themselves, the American Heart Association says, and a home device lets people keep tabs on their numbers. That's important, because when blood pressure is not well controlled, heart disease, ...

ScienceAlert... Drinking the chemical in water restored their cognitive functions. One of the hypothesised causes of the mental deterioration associated with Alzheimer's disease is amyloid beta – a sticky protein that congregates on surfaces in the brain, forming hardened plaques and impeding neural communication. But there's new hope that these plaques can be removed after they've formed, with a study by researchers at the Korea Institute of Science and Technology discovering a chemical that can break amyloid plaques down in the brains of mice, improving the animals' learning and memory functions. The chemical, called EPPS, is similar to taurine, which is used in ...

She allegedly falsified statements to the Federal Election Commission about a large donation to her 2000 Senate campaign… a crime punishable by up to five years in prison. More recently, she was involved in the Benghazi scandal ...

MNT... A leading surgeon has warned a "malicious combination" of obesity, poor hydration, high blood pressure and a lack of exercise is behind a surge in cases of kidney stones. Bhaskar Somani, a consultant urological surgeon at Southampton General Hospital, said admissions for renal stone treatment in England had risen by 20% over the past seven years to more than 90,000, with prevalence up to 50% higher in obese patients. He said poor diets and lifestyles were "fuelling" the development of the condition, with consumption of too much animal protein and levels of salt and sugar creating the "perfect environment" for stones to form. "We know diet and ...

Medscape... (Reuters Health) - Kids and teens who take prescription medicines to treat attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) may be twice as likely to be bullied as their peers who don't have this mental health problem, a recent U.S. study suggests. Adolescents who sold their prescribed drugs to other kids - who might want the stimulants for study or diet aids - had more than four times greater odds of being bullied than their peers without ADHD, the study also found. "Our findings show that there is some connection between a prescription for stimulant medications and bullying, even after accounting for the fact that adolescents with ADHD may have difficulties with ...

Of course, let’s not forget, cell phones emit a form of electromagnetic field called radio frequency radiation. Currently there are about 7.3 billion people on the planet and 6. 9 billion mobile phone subscriptions, so the cell phone is an important issue for that reason alone. But, there are other important reasons why the cell phone question is a concern. Major health concern: How much do you use ...

Alzheimer’s Disease: Current Options and Possible Treatment Approaches

We have to acknowledge that at this point, after having tried literally thousands of approaches, no drug or treatment modality reverses the course of the disease. That doesn’t mean that reversing or at least stopping disease progression is not the objective of a colossal amount of effort on the part of a great many entities of all types – academic centers, big and not-so-big pharma, biotechs of all sizes, government, foundations, and some individual scientists. But it does mean that there is also a great deal of research into drugs and treatments that are not disease-modifying, but can to some degree mitigate the effects of Alzheimer’s disease (AD), specifically in the area ...
