Sex and Dementia: Is it Love or Assault? Post Date: 2015-04-17 01:16:51 by Tatarewicz

Medscape... Hi. I'm Art Caplan, from the Division of Medical Ethics at the NYU Langone Medical Center. Not long ago, a 78-year-old man in Iowa, a representative for that state in the House of Congress, was arrested and charged after being accused of having sex with his wife.[1] That may seem startling and unusual, but the circumstances make it clear why this has happened, and they raise some important ethical issues that physicians and healthcare teams are going to have to wrestle with. This gentleman had remarried late in life to a woman also in her 70s, and they spent a lot of time together and loved each other and things were fine. But, sadly, she was diagnosed with Alzheimer ...
Is the Placebo Effect in Some People's Genes? Post Date: 2015-04-16 19:08:48 by Tatarewicz

(Reuters Health) - Some people may be genetically programmed to feel better after taking placebo pills, while others may only heal with real drugs, suggests a new review of existing research. The study team looked at evidence that some people's genes may make them more prone to experience the placebo effect. If true, and a genetic profile of such "placebo responders" could be identified, it might change the way medications are prescribed and the way clinical trials are designed, the authors say. "Our findings strongly support the idea that genetic signatures for placebo responses exist, but our findings are preliminary," said lead author Kathryn Hall, a ...

How on Earth did humanity ever raise children without the American State telling them how? The entire concept of allowing children to simply play has become so alien these days (thanks to the scare-mongering of the State) that a normal thing now has a new phrase to describe it. They call it free-range parenting. That is, allowing your children to play by themselves without State-mandated mollycoddling and surveillance. You think Im making this up? I wish I was. See this article. Now, look at how the State has threatened these parents simply because they let their 6 year-old and 10 year-old children go to a park about a mile from their home and play by themselves. ...

SEATTLE (Reuters) - A Washington state school district pulled 143 students who lacked documentation proving they had received required immunizations from classrooms on Monday, in a first-in-the-state clamp-down triggered by a recent measles epidemic. The Spokane Public Schools, the state's second-largest district, made the decision after a measles epidemic in which more than 150 people fell ill across the United States, and a whooping cough outbreak in the state's eastern city. "(The students) stay out of school until they show compliance," district spokesman Kevin Morrison said. He said the district was the first in the state to take such action. All U.S. states ...
Atrial Fibrillation Care: Put the Catheter (and Rx Pad) Down Post Date: 2015-04-15 04:19:25 by Tatarewicz

My approach to patients with atrial fibrillation has changed. Completely and fundamentally. This is a before-and-after moment in AF care. Before: We saw atrial fibrillation as a disease rather than seeing it as a result of other diseases. That explains why our treatments (drugs and ablation) have performed so poorly. It is a wrong-target problem. It is akin to stenting an artery and saying atherosclerosis is fixed or prescribing an antipyretic for bacterial infection. After: Atrial fibrillation in the vast majority of patients (excluding those with brief episodes that are a form of focal atrial tachycardia) is a sign that something is awry in the bodyusually exposure to an excess. ...

BIRMINGHAM, UK Patients with atrial fibrillation (AF) who have no other additional risk factors, aside from gender in the case of females, are at a very low risk for stroke and bleeding, according to registry data from Denmark. But with just one additional risk factor, there is a significant increase in the risk of stroke and mortality if the patient is not receiving oral anticoagulation therapy, report investigators[1]. For untreated men and women with a CHA2DS2-VASc score of 1 and 2, respectively, the risk of stroke increased more than twofold and the risk of death increased more than threefold compared with individuals without any risk factors. "The bottom line, maybe as ...

Citizens have demanded the authorities to publish the results of a toxicity test on its glyphosate herbicide Roundup products, according to the Changjiang Times. Last week, the Beijing district court decided to list the company as a defendant, along with China's Ministry of Agriculture, when reviewing the accusation filed by Beijing resident Yang Xiaolu asking the ministry to publish the test report. The International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) under the WHO has listed glyphosate as a possible ...

ScienceAlert... Do you like your steak rare or well done? The answer could influence how mentally sharp you stay as you age, new research suggests. Scientists have found that compounds known as glycotoxins, which form as we brown (or blacken) certain foods, may increase the risk of age-related dementia. Publishing in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences last year, researchers from the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai in the US linked diets high in glycotoxins to age-related dementia and obesity and diabetes in both humans and mice. The researchers found that mice that were raised on a diet high in glycotoxins (specifically a type called advanced glycation end ...

LocalIT All she wanted was to serve her loved ones a tasty drink. But a grandmother from Vicenza is in a spot of bother after three children and an adult fell ill after she gave them hot chocolate that was 25 years out of date. The sachet had been in her cupboard since the late 1980s, but the woman only decided to open it recently, to the delight of her two grandchildren, one of their friends and her son when they came to visit, Corriere del Veneto reported. But the powdered content had expired in 1990. A few hours later the first to be taken ill was the friend of the grandchildren, followed by the two grandchildren, all aged between eight and 12, and the womans son, Il Mattino ...

Want... Male cigarette smokers who want to quit the habit should refrain from viewing photos of attractive women, since this could put them in an immediate-gratification state of mind, leading to reduced self-control over smoking, according to a research paper by a Taiwanese scholar. The study by Chiou Wen-bin, a professor of education at National Sun Yat-sen University in Kaohsiung, revealed that men who want to quit smoking or reduce their craving for tobacco should concentrate on curbing the immediate impulse to smoke. Viewing pictures of attractive women can stimulate a mating mindset in male smokers, leading them to display increased temporal discounting, which is associated with ...

Meltdown at the Grocery Store: Why I Was Ready to Smash the Magnesium Jars Two weeks ago, I almost got thrown out of Wegmans, a hoity-toity supermarket just outside of Baltimore, the dreary city where Living Well Daily HQ resides. Why did I almost get kicked out? Was it for grabbing all the prepackaged garbage overflowing with GMO ingredients, throwing them into a pile, and starting a bonfire? Or dumping all the produce into an inflatable raft, filling it with water, and declaring it a "pesticide pool"? No and no. First of all, it would have taken way too long to make that GMO bonfire. Most of the grocery store would end up in it. And I don't know anything inflatable that ...
