3D Carotid Ultrasound May Reveal Hidden Atherosclerosis Post Date: 2015-04-02 23:23:08 by Tatarewicz

Reuters Health Information NEW YORK (Reuters Health) - 3D carotid ultrasound, with or without CT scans for coronary artery calcium, can identify subclinical atherosclerosis in people with no clinical manifestations, a new paper reports. If these results are confirmed by additional research, the findings would have broad implications because ultrasound is readily available, portable, without risk, readily repeatable, and doesn't expose patients to radiation, according to an editorial published with the results. Led by Dr. Valentin Fuster, director of Mount Sinai Heart and physician-in-chief of Mount Sinai Hospital in New York, the researchers first used coronary artery calcium (CAC) ...
Researchers have created Google Maps for the human body Post Date: 2015-04-02 04:36:16 by Tatarewicz

Engineers from the University of New South Wales (UNSW) in Australia have unveiled world-first technology that lets you explore the human body down to the level of an individual cell, and it's kind of blowing our minds. The zoomable tool uses Google Maps' algorithms to take you on a close-up tour of the structures that make us who we are, and will help researchers and doctors to better understand and treat disease. "For the first time we have the ability to go from the whole body down to how the cells are getting their nutrition and how this is all connected," said Melissa Knothe Tate, a biomedical engineer from UNSW Engineering who is leading the project, in a press ...
Pesticides on Fruits, Vegetables Linked With Poorer Semen Quality Post Date: 2015-04-02 02:39:43 by Tatarewicz

Medscape... (Reuters Health) - Men who eat more fruits and vegetables with pesticide residue have lower sperm counts and a lower percentage of normal sperm, according to a new study. The researchers studied sperm samples from 155 men who were attending a fertility clinic between 2007 and 2012. The men also answered 131 questions about the food they ate, including how often and in what quantities they ate 38 fruits and vegetables like apples, avocadoes or cantaloupe. The researchers compared their answers to annual U.S. Department of Agriculture data on average pesticide residue in types of produce. For example, peppers, spinach, strawberries, apples, and pears tend to have high levels ...
Medieval garlic and bile potion kills MRSA superbug Post Date: 2015-04-01 03:00:36 by Tatarewicz

CBS... Could a 1,000-year-old concoction be the answer to stopping superbugs? Christina Lee, an Anglo-Saxon expert at the University of Nottingham, found the recipe for a remedy for eye infections in a 10th Century medical volume called Bald's Leechbook, one of the earliest known medical textbooks. The instructions were clear -- clear enough to follow today -- so she brought it to a microbiology lab at the university to see if it really works against bacteria. In its original Old English, the recipe -- which may date back even further, to the 9th Century -- called for two species of Allium (garlic and onion or leek), wine and bile from a cow's stomach. The topical potion was ...

Your Face Reveals How Fast You're Aging: Study Tuesday, 31 Mar 2015 11:01 AM Every face tells a story, and that story apparently includes hints of how quickly a person is aging, a new study contends. Facial features have proven even more reliable than blood tests in spotting those for whom time is taking a heavier toll, a Chinese research team reports in the March 31 issue of the journal Cell Research. A computerized 3-D facial imaging process uncovered a number of "tells" that show if a person is aging more rapidly, including a widening mouth, bulging nose, sagging upper lip, shrinking gums and drooping eye corners, the researchers said. "This suggests not only ...
Marine Oils Lower Risk for Colorectal Cancer Subtype Post Date: 2015-03-31 02:38:36 by Tatarewicz

Medscape... Fish oil intake does not appear to have a protective effect against the development of colorectal cancer overall, although it was found to be associated with a lower risk for one particular subtype in newly reported research. Specifically, the study found that a high intake of marine omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) was associated with a lower risk for microsatellite instable (MSI)high colorectal cancers, but it did not affect the risk of developing microsatellite stable (MSS) tumors. The findings were published March 25 in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute. Only about 10% to 15% of colorectal tumors display MSI, which is caused by the loss of ...

Researchers at Texas Tech University studied the particulate matter blown up over the Texas Panhandle and South Plains from the large feedlots where 5 million beef cattle are raised for slaughter yearly. They found that air downwind from the feedlots contained significantly more antibiotic-resistant bacteria DNA than air upwind, they ...

A Finnish research group carried out the study on musicians from a professional orchestra and music university, the ScienceDaily website reported on Friday. "The findings provide a valuable background for molecular studies of music perception and evolution, and music therapy," said study leader Dr Irma Järvelä. The group investigated the effect performing music had on the musicians during a two-hour long concert. The study also revealed that some of the activated genes are known to be involved in biological pathways, such ...

Government finally admits it was wrong about Cholesterol Brad Hoppmann | March 28, 2015 at 8:30 am For the past 40 years, weve been told to limit our cholesterol intake and adopt a low-fat diet. Cholesterol and fat, we were told, are dangerous to our heart health and must be minimized to prevent heart disease. We didnt hear these warnings from random, fly-by-night "experts" trying to hawk a heart-healthy solution. This information came straight from the U.S. government, the American Heart Association and other health organizations. And now, in an astonishing position reversal, these experts may soon stop singing the "low-cholesterol, low-fat" diet ...

Immunotherapy: The new weapon in the fight against cancer By Molly McGuiness The idea that we could use our bodies to fight cancer is nothing new. Dr. Siddhartha Mukherjee explains, We think of science as a kind of linear narrative. But of course its a circular narrative as well. You look at the past to figure out, Well, wait a second, maybe that thing that really died an early death could be recovered and rejuvenated. And now its an amazingly important cancer medicine. Thats what makes it a detective story. Yahoo Global News Anchor Katie Couric sat down with Mukherjee and filmmaker Ken Burns to discuss the new documentary Cancer: ...

Crossing fingers can reduce feelings of pain Post Date: 2015-03-27 05:47:13 by Tatarewicz

ScienceDaily: How you feel pain is affected by where sources of pain are in relation to each other, and so crossing your fingers can change what you feel on a single finger, finds new UCL research. The research, published in Current Biology, used a variation on an established pain experiment, known as the "thermal grill illusion." In the thermal grill illusion, a pattern of warm-cold-warm temperatures applied to the index, middle and ring finger respectively causes a paradoxical, sometimes painful, sensation of burning heat on the middle finger -- even though this finger is actually presented with a cold stimulus. "The thermal grill is a useful component in our ...

NICE, France Higher consumption of green tea was associated with a lower risk for dementia or mild cognitive impairment (MCI), even after possible confounding factors were considered, a Japanese study shows. Black tea or coffee did not show the same effect. Researchers led by Moeko Noguchi-Shinohara, MD, from Kanazawa University Graduate School of Medical Science in Japan, conducted a population-based, prospective study of residents of Nakajima older than age 60 years, starting with participants with normal cognitive function in 2007-2008 as evaluated by using the Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE) and the Clinical Dementia Rating (CDR) scale. The investigators reported these ...

Infant Dies After Being Vaccinated No Answers for His Family More than a Year Later Vaccine injuries are real. They can cause a myriad of adverse reactions, including death. The research is out there to prove it. Yet somehow, all over the media today, all you will hear about is a small handful of measles cases and how the flu vaccine isnt effective this year, but you should get it anyway. If only more parents would do their own research and not listen to the media, they might be aware of the dangers, and spare themselves the pain that one mother in California is going through after losing her previously healthy baby boy to vaccination. By all accounts, Matthew Downing-Powers ...

Sputnik... The finding that the worlds most popular herbicide probably causes cancer could have implications that reach beyond the farming industry all the way to South America and the United States war on drugs. Last week, the International Agency for Research on Cancer, a research arm of the World Health Organization, published a report saying the herbicide glyphosate and two insecticides, malathion and diazinon, were "probably carcinogenic." The conclusion was based on "limited evidence" of cancer among humans and convincing evidence among lab animals. Monsanto's cash cow weedkiller Roundup probably causes cancer, according to a new ...
