Lack of exercise responsible for twice as many early deaths as obesity

ScienceDaily... A brisk 20 minute walk each day could be enough to reduce an individual's risk of early death, according to new research published today. The study of over 334,000 European men and women found that twice as many deaths may be attributable to lack of physical activity compared with the number of deaths attributable to obesity, but that just a modest increase in physical activity could have significant health benefits. Physical inactivity has been consistently associated with an increased risk of early death, as well as being associated with a greater risk of diseases such as heart disease and cancer. Although it may also contribute to an increased body mass index ...

Hello. I am Dr David Johnson, professor of medicine and chief of gastroenterology at Eastern Virginia Medical School in Norfolk, Virginia. Welcome back to another installment of GI Common Concerns – Computer Consult . (Enlarge Slide)(Enlarge Slide) Today I want to chat about constipation. We see this all the time as gastro-enterologists, primary care providers, and extended care providers—even as gynecologists. This is a very common problem. Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is strongly related to chronic idiopathic constipation (CIC). The pooled global prevalence of IBS is approximately 11%, and for CIC it is approximately 14%.[1] The problem is that we don't have good tests ...

Even scientists were alarmed when they saw this... They couldn't believe that all the people with weight issues have this one thing in common. The color of their urine. And somehow, your pee color determines how easily you gain weight. Why? It all has to do with the amount of water you drink... And why if you exceed this amount of water intake a day, you could have a wrecked metabolism. Who Should Own a Medical Record -- The Doctor or the Patient?

Medscape When Medscape's Editor-in-Chief, cardiologist Eric Topol, MD, wondered in a recent column whether it was patients or physicians who ought to own patient medical records, it sparked over 400 comments from physicians. Dr Topol didn't take a position one way or the other. Instead he cited experts on both sides of the issue, as well as a recent Medscape survey in which 54% of the 1100 respondents who were patients believed that they own their medical records, and 39% of 1400 health professionals felt that physicians did. Dr Topol also cited Open Notes, an ongoing study in which patients are given direct access to their records in their physicians' electronic health ...

Higher levels of vitamin D might improve survival in patients with advanced colorectal cancer, new research suggests.

In a prospective study of more than 1000 patients, median overall survival was significantly better in patients with the highest vitamin D levels than in those with the lowest levels (32.6 vs 24.5 months; hazard ratio [HR], 0.67; P trend < .002). Higher levels were also associated with better progression-free survival (10.1 vs 12.2 months; P = .02). The results were consistent across subgroups, such as KRAS mutation status, after adjustment for various prognostic factors. This was an observational study, not a randomized study, emphasized lead author Kimmie Ng, MD, MPH, assistant professor of medicine at the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, Harvard Medical School, in Boston. "But ...

Navy Proves Flu Shot Doesn't Work Monday, 12 Jan 2015 04:45 PM By Sylvia Booth Hubbard The current flu season is raging and heading toward epidemic levels, and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention admits that the current vaccine isn't well-matched to the most predominate strain. Still, the CDC and doctors continue to urge people to get a flu shot, claiming it will offer at least partial immunity. But how effective is the flu shot even under the best of circumstances? "The flu shot isn't very effective and a new study published by the CDC proves it," says holistic family physician Dr. David Brownstein. The study, which slipped under the radar of most ...

The average person in the United States touches their face 2,000 times a day. During flu season, that's the kind of stat you might want to pay attention to. Early in December last year, we were preparing for a Monday morning quarterback meeting when suddenly stars started shooting out of nowhere into my line of site. I dropped to one knee. And had to crawl over to a couch in my office. "This one's really bad," I called out. After getting whisked to the clinic, I learned I had an upper respiratory infection. The little ba$tard was cutting off my airways. The doc, unfazed, gave me a Z-Pak, which helped. But after I got home, I slept for 36 hours straight. Mutant viruses ...

Responsible Drinking? Not Very "Responsible drinking" has become a 21st-century mantra for how most people view alcohol consumption. But when it comes to cancer, no amount of alcohol is safe.[1] That is the conclusion of the 2014 World Cancer Report (WCR), issued by the World Health Organization's International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC). Declared a carcinogen by the IARC in 1988,[2] alcohol is causally related to several cancers. "We have known for a long time that alcohol causes esophageal cancer, says Jürgen Rehm, PhD, WCR contributor on alcohol consumption, and Senior Scientist at the Centre for Addictions and Mental Health in Toronto, Ontario, ...

(Reuters) - An experimental drug from Sanofi SA and Regeneron Pharmaceuticals was found to be effective in lowering LDL cholesterol even when administered once every four weeks, instead of every two weeks. The drug, alirocumab, belongs to an emerging class of injectable drugs that block a naturally occurring protein called PCSK9, which inhibits the liver from expelling LDL cholesterol. These PCSK9 inhibitors are aimed at patients whose cholesterol levels do not fall enough despite the use of statins such as Pfizer Inc's Lipitor, and those who are unable to tolerate them. Alirocumab was tested in 803 high cholesterol patients with a moderate-to-high heart risk. It compared a 300 mg ...

Medscape... WHITEHOUSE STATION, NJ — All lots of the cholesterol drug marketed as Liptruzet (ezetimibe and atorvastatin) across four doses are being recalled, the manufacturer, Merck, announced today[1]. Yahoo... SEATTLE (Reuters) - Strains of listeria bacteria found inside a California apple processing plant are believed to be the same ones associated with an outbreak that killed seven people and sickened dozens of others last year, federal officials said. Two strains of Listeria monocytogenes were confirmed in the Bidart Bros. apple processing plant near Bakersfield, California, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) said. "Those same strains were also found in Bidart Bros. apples collected from a retailer," the FDA said in a statement on Friday. A majority of the people infected by listeria fell ill from eating packaged, caramel-coated apples, according to the Centers for ...

Refined Foods Cause Nutrition Deficiencies

Refined Foods Cause Nutrition Deficiencies Friday, 02 Jan 2015 04:06 PM By David Brownstein, M.D. Natural foods contain many healthy vitamins, minerals, and enzymes. However, over time, those substances can degrade. Manufactured foods are made with refined sugar, salt, flour, and oil. The refining process removes those healthy vitamins, minerals, and enzymes, leaving a food product that is devitalized. Why would manufacturers refine foods? Because foods that are refined can sit on the shelf for a very long time without spoiling. This longer shelf life ensures a higher profit margin. The purpose of eating is to supply the body with raw materials in order to fuel the natural ...

Yahoo... Relaxnews Eating blueberries on a daily basis could lower both systolic and diastolic blood pressure in just eight weeks, according to researchers at Florida State University. "To our knowledge, this is the first study to evaluate the effects of blueberries on arterial function as was done in this study, as well as in this study population," says corresponding author Dr. Bahram H. Arjmandi of FSU. "These findings suggest that blueberries may prevent the progression to full-blown hypertension." Postmenopausal women were selected for the study because their incidence of high blood pressure exceeds that of men, and participants were considered to be in the early ...

Three years later, 86 percent of them have had no relapses, and 91 percent are showing no signs of MS development. BEC CREW 9 JAN 2015 Facebook IconTwitter IconEmail Icon A new stem cell treatment has sent most of the MS patients who tried it into remission, halting the progression of the disease even several years afterwards. The clinical study, led by Richard A. Nash of the Colorado Blood Cancer Institute in the US, involved 24 volunteer patients with relapsing-remitting MS (RRMS). This form of the disease, which affects around 85 ...

High-Fructose Corn Syrup is Toxic

By feeding mice sugar in doses that correspond to realistic amounts that we’d actually eat, researchers discovered that the fructose-glucose mix in high-fructose corn syrup is more toxic than sucrose, or table sugar. It reduced reproduction and shortened the lifespans of females... Click for Full Text!Poster Comment:I've been on a low-sugar diet lately, trying to reduce some belly fat. In the past I have heard scientists say that high-fructose corn syrup and sugar metabolize into the same chemical in the body, so there is no health difference. Then I read this story that backs up what many others have said, HFCS is bad stuff.

Dr Moulden died unexpectedly in November of 2013 at age 49. Because of the strong opposition from big pharma concerning Dr. ...

Medscape Editors' Recommendations Cancer Is the Best Way to Die, Says Former BMJ Editor A recent BMJ editorial received many comments when its former editor Richard Smith, MD, wrote that cancer was the best way to die. He examined the ways a person can die (including sudden death, dementia, organ failure, and cancer), and suggested a higher benefit for patients and their families who have time to reflect and prepare for the end of their lives when dying from cancer. Dr Smith also said, "let's stop wasting billions trying to cure cancer, potentially leaving us to die a much more horrible death." Many readers disagreed in the article's comments section, describing ...
