Scientists from the Council for Responsible Nutrition (CRN) recently published a science-based review about recent studies on multivitamins and multimineral (MVMM) supplements. The review was written by Duffy MacKay, N.D., senior vice president, scientific and regulatory affairs, and Andrea Wong, Ph.D., vice president, scientific and regulatory affairs and published in the Natural Medicine Journal, the official journal of the American Association of Naturopathic Physicians. The studies reviewed were published in the December issue of the Annals of Internal Medicine (AIM). "We felt compelled to write the review, given that the accompanying editorial came to conclusions that were ...

The Great US Fascist Revolution

The US and other governments routinely lie in their official statistics and all serious analysts know this. The lies get reported in bits and pieces almost every day. Yesterday, for example, medical researchers who studied the real details of US deaths due to Alzheimer’s concluded the official figure of annual deaths from Alzheimer’s is about 500% lower than the real death figure of about a half million a year, making Alzheimer’s one of the great modern plagues with heart disease, cancer, and diabetes. [The lowball figure has been a lie because all serious analysts have known for decades that the death certificates used by CDC et al. to calculate official causes of death ...

MS Linked With Use of Hormonal Contraceptives

Women with multiple sclerosis (MS) or clinically isolated syndrome (CIS) were more likely to have used oral contraceptives in the 3 years before their diagnosis than women who did not have MS or CIS, the results of a new case-control study show. "Independent of age, smoking status, parity and obesity, there was a link between the use of oral contraceptives and the development of the first symptoms of MS," lead author Kerstin Hellwig, MD, a postdoctoral research fellow at Kaiser Permanente Southern California, commented to Medscape Medical News. "These findings suggest that using hormonal contraceptives may be contributing at least in part to the rise in the rate of MS among ...

This is the first time that researchers examine the effects of protein, fat and carbohydrate on energy intake, metabolic health, ageing and lobgevity. The results could lead to a better understanding of what a healthy diet actually means. Image: monticello/ShutterstockFood intake is regulated primarily by dietary protein and carbohydrate, and not by the number of calories consumed, according to the most comprehensive study of macronutrient balance ever undertaken. Conducted by the University of Sydney's ground-breaking Charles Perkins Centre and published in Cell Metabolism, the world-first research examines the effects of protein, fat and carbohydrate on energy intake, metabolic ...

Massive Dinosaur Soft Tissue Discovery In China – Includes Skin And Feathers!

A fossil bed in China that is being called “Jurassic Park” has yielded perhaps the greatest dinosaur soft tissue discovery of all time. According to media reports, “nearly-complete skeletons” have been discovered that even include skin and feathers. But of course if these dinosaurs are really “160 million years old”, that should be absolutely impossible. Needless to say, this shocking discovery is once again going to have paleontologists scrambling to find a way to prop up the popular myths that they have been promoting. What they have been telling us simply does not fit the facts. The truth is that this latest find is even more evidence that dinosaurs are ...

Start Your Own Seed Bank: How to Beat the Food Killers at Their Own Game

While having a nice stash of freeze-dried, dehydrated and canned foods is great fall-back, nothing can replace fresh crisp garden vegetables and fragrant, sweet fruit. Increasingly, it is incumbent on individuals to maintain their own supply of life-sustaining seeds. Seed vaults are not a new concept and had its roots 40 years ago over growing concerns for maintaining bio-diversity. A decade ago, it became mainstream when the global seed vault in Svalbard, Norway took center stage. It is just one of some 1,400 seeds banks around the world. Bet this puts a crimp in Monsanto’s Day! As of 2010, in that location alone, more than 500,000 unique seeds rest waiting to bail out humanity. So ...

WASHINGTON, March 5 (Xinhua) -- High concentrations of phthalates, chemicals found in a wide range of consumer products, in men may lead to delayed pregnancy for their female partners, a U.S. study said Wednesday. Researchers at the National Institutes of Health and other institutions assessed the concentrations of phthalates in couples trying to achieve pregnancy. Phthalates, sometimes called plasticizers, are used in the manufacture of plastics, to make them more flexible and are found in hundreds of products, such as fragrances, shampoos, nail polish, plastic film and sheets. For the most part, people are exposed to phthalates by eating and drinking foods that have been in contact ...

Antibiotic misuse common in U.S. hospitals: report

WASHINGTON, March 4 (Xinhua) -- Doctors in some U.S. hospitals prescribe three times as many antibiotics as doctors in other hospitals, putting patients at risk for future super-resistant infections, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention ( CDC) warned Tuesday. In addition, about one-third of the time, prescribing practices to treat urinary tract infections and prescriptions for a common antibiotic called vancomycin included a potential error, for instance, given without proper testing or evaluation, or given for too long a period, the CDC said in its new Vital Signs report. "Prescribing varies widely among hospitals," CDC Director Tom Frieden told a press ...

Antioxidants Will Never End

Is there an end to the antioxidant compounds from plants and microorganisms? Even dog food is fortified with blueberries. 7-11 has pomegranate juice and kale; collards and kefir are making recipe comebacks. Can consumers hear when we introduce yet another miracle antioxidant supplement or superfood? The answer is there is no end, and consumers are still testing the waters of vitamin C, so caffeic acid phenethyl ester is indeed falling on deaf ears. The reason for the confusion is that our phytochemical paradigm is wrong. We treat each new phytochemical antioxidant as a newly discovered vitamin, full of promise to heal what ails you. However plants are making phytochemical antioxidants for ...

Help Women Love the Skin They're In for Longer

Women can spend hundreds of dollars monthly on make-up and skin products, a number that can easily escalate if they visit spas or salons. Men clearly notice how wonderful professional make-up looks on celebrities and models, but when it comes to their spouses, girlfriends, or daughters, most prefer no make-up at all. If you can’t get on a boat or a beach because it ruins your face, men have little sympathy and really can’t fathom how this could be a serious issue. The temptation to cover flaws with make-up can be overwhelming, but eventually it must come off. Evidently long-term success in a relationship might be enhanced by fresh, radiant skin that stays that way for decades. ...

Bugs in the Back: Is Lumbago an Infectious Disease?

Hello. I am Paul Auwaerter, from Johns Hopkins, speaking for Medscape Infectious Diseases. I just had my first consultation with a patient who came to the ID clinic asking whether Propionibacterium acnes was responsible for his chronic back pain. This is a man who has had multiple back surgeries and many previous interventions and treatments for his pain. He recently had been encouraged by family members, who had been trolling the Internet literature, to find out whether a chronic infection could be causing his back pain. P acnes is often dismissed as a contaminant, but during the past decade or so it has been recognized as an indolent pathogen that can cause problems such as ...

HELSINKI, Feb. 26 (Xinhua) -- A joint medical research conducted by Finnish and Estonian researchers found that some biomarkers in blood sample could predict mortality risk to people who appear healthy, Finnish Broadcasting Company YLE reported on Wednesday. Researchers used NMR Spectroscopy, which is capable to screen large numbers of blood samples in a cost-effective way, to screen blood samples taken from a total of 17,000 Finnish and Estonian people, and measured 106 biomarkers to check if any of them were associated with risks of death. A biomarker is a biological molecule found in blood, body fluids or tissues that may signal an abnormal process, a condition or a disease. The level ...

Browned meat may develop dementia risk

PressTV A new study conducted by the U.S. researchers suggests that barbecued, grilled or fried meat may contribute to the development of dementia risk. Browning meat through different cooking ways produces chemicals known as Advanced Glycation End (AGE) which play significant role in the chemistry of the brain. Researchers at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, in New York, tested the effect of AGEs on mice and people, according to the study report published in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. The research unveiled that mice fed a high-AGEs diet had a build-up of harmful proteins in the brain and impaired cognitive function. AGEs are produced when proteins or ...

Blood pressure meds may raise elderly fall risk

NEW YORK (Reuters Health) - Older people who take blood pressure medications had more serious injuries from falls than those not taking medications, according to a new study. The added risk with blood pressure meds for falls that cause serious injury has been suggested before, but older people shouldn't stop taking their medications based just on these results, the authors say. "It is important to remember that no single study, and particularly an observational study such as ours, can give a definitive answer," said Dr. Mary E. Tinetti, who led the research. "We cannot say definitively that antihypertensive medications led to serious fall injuries such as hip ...

ScienceDaily... If you've run out of drinking water during a lakeside camping trip, there's a simple solution: Break off a branch from the nearest pine tree, peel away the bark, and slowly pour lake water through the stick. The improvised filter should trap any bacteria, producing fresh, uncontaminated water. In fact, scientists have discovered that this low-tech filtration system can produce up to four liters of drinking water a day -- enough to quench the thirst of a typical person. The researchers demonstrate that a small piece of sapwood can filter out more than 99 percent of the bacteria E. coli from water. A false-color electron microscope image showing E. coli bacteria ...

ScienceDaily: Summary: Thoughts of suicide, sexual difficulties and emotional numbness as a result of anti-depressants may be more widespread than previously thought, a researcher has found. In a survey of 1,829 people who had been prescribed anti-depressants, the researchers found large numbers of people -- over half in some cases -- reporting on psychological problems due to their medication, which has led to growing concerns about the scale of the problem of over-prescription of these drugs. "While the biological side-effects of antidepressants, such as weight gain and nausea, are well documented, the psychological and interpersonal effects have been largely ignored or denied. ...

I agree with Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas who remarked recently that people now seem more overly sensitive about racial differences than 50 years ago. In my view, the elitists of the Left seem to be obsessed over race, but not in a genuinely sensitive way, more in a self-righteous and even hypocritical way. When someone criticizes Barack Obama, for instance, the race-obsessed accuse the critics of racism, regardless of the issue. And many news editors continue to censor out the race of black youths accused of assaulting white victims. And, believe it or not, there has even been a case recently in which the president of a prestigious university misread an article which had ...

Kale sucks: famous chefs reveal the most over/underrated veggies

Veggies are a pretty big bone of contention here at Thrillist, but if we really have to eat them (maybe stuffed inside some meat?), we certainly will. But which ones are worth your attention and love? We polled some famous chefs to get their thoughts on what vegetables are the most overrated and which are the most underrated. CHRIS CIPOLLONE - CHEF, PIORA (NEW YORK, NY) Most overrated vegetable: Kale "Although not a bad thing, kale is misused a lot of the time. Serving it raw is not that pleasant (let's be real here), and cooking it just yields a boring, flat texture for me. It has been a victim of over-hype." Most underrated vegetable: Sunchokes "If you have ever ...
