A new anti-clotting pill, rivaroxaban, has been found to be as effective as the standard medication of warfarin in preventing a stroke in a common form of heart beat irregularity. A study of more than 14,000 patients with atrial fibrillation (AF) showed no significant difference between rivaroxaban and warfarin in the prevention of blood clots and stroke. During the study period, a stroke or systemic embolism occurred in only 1.7 percent of the patients taking rivaroxaban compared with 2.2 percent of those taking warfarin, according to a report published in the New England Journal of Medicine. Atrial fibrillation (AF) is the most common form of abnormal heart rhythm (cardiac ...
This is what happens when you ban heroin Post Date: 2011-08-11 07:03:34 by Ada

How appropriate that California is home to the newest ban on caffeinated beer. This haven of busy-body progressivism has long been a national leader in the war against liberty and property. Talk-radio conservatives are mocking Governor Jerry Browns crusade against the dread alcohol-caffeine combo, lamenting the implications for our dwindling personal responsibility, freedom and common sense. This is classic California, they seem to agree. But they do not appear to realize the origin of these terrible anti-liberty attacks, even when the answer is most obvious. Indeed it was in California that the war on drugs began. The 1875 Opium Dens Ordinance, mostly targeting Chinese immigrants, ...

The first antibody which can fight all types of the influenza A virus has been discovered, according to American researchers. Experiments on flu-infected mice, published in Science Express, showed the antibody could be used as an "emergency treatment." It has already been suggested that some people who had swine flu may develop 'super immunity' to other infections. As a result, scientists from the Medical Research Council's National Institute for Medical Research looked at more than 100,000 samples of immune cells from patients who had the flu or the flu vaccines, reports Xinhua. "As we saw with the 2009 pandemic, a comparatively mild strain of influenza can ...
How clean is your colon? Post Date: 2011-08-10 03:10:40 by Tatarewicz

How clean is your colon? If you're tempted to find out by getting a colon cleanse, don't bother. You're quite likely to develop complications from the procedure and there's no evidence that flushing out your colon has any health benefits. That's the conclusion researchers reached after reviewing 20 studies on colonic cleansing. Dr. Ranit Mishori and her team at Georgetown University School of Medicine and Providence Hospital report in the Journal of Family Practice that colonic cleanses-whether with water or via supplements or herbal remedies, don't actually do much-other than potentially cause some uncomfortable, and in some cases dangerous side effects, says TIME. ...

BEIJING - A restaurant employee injured at work in Central China allowed a doctor to remove stitches to his wounds shortly after receiving treatment, rather than pay the bill. The case was first reported by the Wuhan-based Chutian Metropolis Daily, which is in Hubei province. The man, surnamed Zeng, received deep wounds to two fingers on Friday evening from broken plates. His colleagues quickly took him to the nearby Wuhan No 3 Hospital for treatment. However, they were shocked when a bill for 1,830 yuan ($280) was presented 50 minutes later. They had brought only 1,000 yuan. A colleague surnamed Wu tried to negotiate with the hospital, asking if they could pay the rest the next day. ...

WUHAN, Aug. 6 (Xinhua) -- A Chinese man nearing 80 years old was recently diagnosed with HIV and doctors say he probably caught the virus through having "frequent unprotected sex." The case is the latest to support the opinions of experts who believe the virus is spreading fast among older Chinese men who have been largely neglected in the country's anti-AIDS campaigns. The latest diagnosed man, whose identity has been concealed for privacy reasons, was admitted to Zhongnan Hospital in central Chinese city of Wuhan with a lingering fever. He was later found to be HIV positive, doctors at the hospital said Friday. The man was widowed in his old age, has no record of blood ...

The Massey University findings were published by the UK-based Occupational and Environmental Medicine journal. Centre for Public Health researcher Dr Andrea t Mannetje and her team found the risk of developing a blood cancer was three times as high for those who had grown up on a poultry farm. U.S. federal agents allegedly allowed the Sinaloa drug cartel to traffic several tons of cocaine into the United States in exchange for information about rival cartels, according to court documents filed in a U.S. federal court. The allegations are part of the defense of Vicente Zambada-Niebla, who was extradited to the United States to face drug-trafficking charges in Chicago. He is also a top lieutenant of drug kingpin Joaquin "Chapo" Guzman and the son of Ismael "Mayo" Zambada-Garcia, believed to be the brains behind the Sinaloa cartel. The case could prove to be a bombshell on par with the U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives' ...

WASHINGTON (JTA) -- U.S. Reps. Ileana Ros-Lehtinen and Debbie Wasserman Schultz of Florida sponsored a bill that would give Holocaust survivors preference in obtaining aging services. The bill introduced Monday in the House of Representatives arose out of meetings that Rep. Ileana Ros-Lehtinen, a Republican, and Wasserman Schultz, a Democrat, had with Holocaust survivors. In lauding the measure, the Jewish Federations of North America said in a statement that it "strengthens agencies that support Holocaust survivors who wish to age in place rather than move into institutionalized care, which can often lead to retraumatization for these victims of terror and torture." JFNA, the ...

Did you know that how much pain you feel can depend on the color of your hair? According to research out of Louisville Kentucky, people with red hair are more sensitive to pain and thus need more anaesthetic during surgical operations. In this study, a low dose of anaesthetic was given to a group of red haired women along with another group with dark hair and then, believe it or not, they were subjected to electric shocks. The researchers (otherwise known as Bullies), then kept increasing the anaesthetic medication dose until the women no longer complained of the discomfort (or stopped hitting the scientists). What they found is that the red heads complained longer and louder because they ...

"They are just as bad as the rest of us," says researcher Nir Barzilai, MD, director of the Institute for Aging Research at Albert Einstein College of Medicine of Yeshiva University, New York. Warning over newer antidepressants pills By Jane KirbyWednesday, 3 August 2011 Newer antidepressants may increase the risk of serious health problems in older people compared to older pills, researchers say. Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) are more likely to cause death and issues such as heart attack, stroke, falls and seizures than older tricyclic antidepressants (TCAs), according to a study published in the British Medical Journal (BMJ). Researchers from the universities of Nottingham and East Anglia analysed data for more than 60,000 people diagnosed with depression between 1996 and 2007. All were aged 65 and over. Those patients not taking any ...

VERY GOOD BURN TREATMENT A young man sprinkling his lawn and bushes with pesticides wanted to check the contents of the barrel to see how much pesticide remained in it. He raised the cover and lit his lighter; the vapors inflamed and engulfed him. He jumped from his truck, screaming. His neighbor came out of her house with a dozen eggs, yelling: "bring me some eggs!" She broke them, separating the whites from the yolks. The neighbor woman helped her to apply the whites on the young man's face. When the ambulance arrived and when the EMTs saw the young man, they asked who had done this. Everyone pointed to the lady in charge. They congratulated her and said: "You have ...
