Lorianna De Giorgio Toronto Star Take one pet tortoise, add two wheels commonly used for office furniture and you’ve got the world’s first bionic turtle. In late February, a red-footed tortoise in Brazil was given a new lease on life, when a team of veterinarians at the Veterinary Hospital of Uberaba in the country’s Minas Gerais state attached two wheels to its shell. Originally the adult tortoise’s owner had brought the animal into the hospital in hopes that doctors could heal an infected leg wound. The tortoise had damaged its left leg on an electrical fence that had fallen down in the garden where it lives The team, however, had no choice but to amputate the ...

Breakthrough in delivering drugs to the brain

A new way of delivering drugs to the brain has been developed by scientists at the University of Oxford. They used the body's own transporters - exosomes - to deliver drugs in an experiment on mice. The authors say the study, in Nature Biotechnology, could be vital for treating diseases such as Alzheimer's, Parkinson's and Muscular Dystrophy. The Alzheimer's Society said the study was "exciting" and could lead to more effective treatments. Research barrier One of the medical challenges with diseases of the brain is getting any treatment to cross the blood-brain barrier. The barrier exists to protect the brain, preventing bacteria from crossing over from the ...

French Green Clay How To Use This Radiation Protocol

French Green Clay How To Use This Radiation ProtocolDr. Janet Starr Hull 3-20-11 The radiation leaking from the nuclear power plants in Japan have raised new awareness in many countries around the world, and that's a very good thing because awareness brings change, and positive change keeps mankind moving forward. As a result of the nuclear disaster in Japan, people are learning new ways to prevent exposure to man-made radiation using natural clays. The radiation circulating the planet is moving across many borders; it is circulating in everyone's air and water; it is impacting plants and animals in different countries, moving over miles of oceans, over islands, and ...

Bad to Worse in Japan

Bad to Worse in Japan - by Stephen Lendman It bears repeating. Government, industry, and major media reports downplay and deny Japan's unprecedented nuclear disaster, potentially able to kill millions now living and in future generations painfully. Nuclear power is a real life Andromeda Strain. If uncontrollably unleashed, it's potentially able to destroy life worldwide under a worse case scenario. In his latest article, nuclear expert Harvey Wasserman said "the most devastating thing about (Fukushima) is not what's happening there now. It's that until all the world's reactors are shut, even worse is virtually certain to happen again. All too soon." ...

Multiples Worse than Chernobyl

Multiples Worse than Chernobyl - by Stephen Lendman In Japan, coverup and denial persist. In a March 18 press conference, Tokyo Electric's (TEPCO) spokesman claimed water-dousing lowered radiation levels from 312 microsieverts per hour to 289. However, 48 hours earlier, chief cabinet secretary Yukido Edano said radioactivity levels were misreported in microsieverts instead of millisieverts - 1,000 times stronger. Contrary to other reports, TEPCO's spokesman also said water remains in Unit 4's cooling pool. In fact, there's none. Nothing the company says is credible. In contrast, distinguished nuclear expert Helen Caldicott called Fukushima an unprecedented "absolute ...

Full Core Meltdown in Japan?

Full Core Meltdown in Japan? - by Stephen Lendman Possibly it's ongoing and concealed. All along, Japanese and Tokyo Electric (TEPCO) officials downplayed or lied about the severity of the crisis. Virtually nothing they say can be believed. Nor from the Obama administration, budgeting loan guarantees for new reactor construction instead of decommissioning all 104 nuclear plants because operating them risks full core meltdowns. Partial or full ones gravely harm earth, air, water and food. Three hazardous Fukushima radioactive isotopes are especially problematic. University of Rochester Professor Jacqueline Williams, a radiation expert, says ingesting radioactive iodine-131 causes ...

8 Foods Rich in Iodine [Once Again, Diet has the Solutions]

8 Foods Rich in Iodine By Dr. Edward Group Iodine is an essential trace mineral crucial in the functioning of the thyroid gland, an organ that stores the minerals needed for the synthesis of our thyroid hormones. It is important to get adequate amounts of iodine in your diet to ensure the proper functioning of the this vital gland which controls much of our metabolism, detoxification, growth and development. Research has shown that a lack of iodine foods in your diet may lead to enlargement of the thyroid gland, lethargy, fatigue, weakness of the immune system, slow metabolism, autism, weight gain and possibly even mental states such as anxiety and depression. The good news is that there ...

LOS ANGELES, March 16 (Xinhua) -- The death rate in the United States reached an all-time low in 2009, dropping 2.3 percent from 2008, a newly released report said. This was the 10th straight year of decline, demonstrating that Americans are living longer than ever, according to the report from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's National Center for Health Statistics. The nation saw a drop from 758.7 deaths per 100,000 people in 2008 to 741 per 100,000 people in 2009 when 2,436,682 deaths were reported, said the report published by HealthDay News on Wednesday. However, life expectancy for blacks remained unchanged -- 70.9 years for men and 77.4 years for women. The ...

Armageddon Scenario in Japan

Armageddon Scenario in Japan - by Stephen Lendman Japan's deepening disaster affects everyone. Atmospheric radiation will spread globally, mostly affecting the northern hemisphere. Everyone to some extent will be affected, those in Japan and nearby the most. An unprecedented catastrophe is unfolding. You'd hardly know it from most major media reports, including US broadcast and cable channels, National Public Radio, Public Broadcasting, BBC, and Al Jazeera, failing to explain a deepening catastrophe placing millions of lives at risk. On March 16, however, Russia Today said Japan "may be losing control" at Fukushima after a rise in radiation suggests efforts to contain ...

Gene therapy twice as good as placebo treating Parkinson's

Treating Parkinson's disease with gene therapy has been shown to be successful in clinical trials for the first time, say US researchers. The illness causes uncontrolled shaking, stiffness and slow movement as part of the brain dies. The small study in The Lancet Neurology used a virus to add genes to brain cells, which resulted in reduced symptoms for half of patients. Parkinson's UK welcomed the study, but said further research was needed. The disease affects 120,000 people in the UK, mostly in the over-50s. There is no cure, although drugs and deep brain stimulation have been shown to reduce symptoms. Gene treatment Patients with Parkinson's have reduced levels of a ...

A glowing report on radiation -- Ann Coulter

With the terrible earthquake and resulting tsunami that have devastated Japan, the only good news is that anyone exposed to excess radiation from the nuclear power plants is now probably much less likely to get cancer. This only seems counterintuitive because of media hysteria for the past 20 years trying to convince Americans that radiation at any dose is bad. There is, however, burgeoning evidence that excess radiation operates as a sort of cancer vaccine. As the New York Times science section reported in 2001, an increasing number of scientists believe that at some level – much higher than the minimums set by the U.S. government – radiation is good for you. "They ...

Red Wine Fights Radiation Better than Iodine
Post Date: 2011-03-16 13:49:34 by Ada

Professors recommend the home-made remedy tested after the Accident in Chernobyl Have red wine instead of iodine solutions to curb the effects of radiation. This is the advice of Bulgarian scholars as a response to the panic stirred after the explosions in the Japanese nuclear plant of Fukushima. Although the explosions in Japan happened at quite a distance from Bulgaria, thousands of Bulgarians stormed into drug stores to buy iodine supplements. This is dangerous as it could damage the thyroid gland, the Bulgarian Ministry of Health alarmed. Red wine consumption is by far a more potent barrier to radiation because of its high tannin concentration, Prof Donka Baykova, deputy chair of the ...

Nano diamonds deliver cancer drug to target

Carbon nanoparticles promise multifaceted benefits in transporting drugs Attaching chemotherapy drugs to small particles called nanodiamonds can make the drugs more effective, according to a study published this week in Science Translational Medicine1. Anticancer drugs tend to become ineffective because cancer cells quickly pump them out before they have had time to do their work. This kind of drug resistance accounts for 90% of treatment failure in malignant cancer. Nanodiamonds — carbon-based particles 2–8 nanometres in diameter with a truncated octahedral structure that gives it multiple facets not unlike a diamond's — overcome this problem because the cellular ...

The annual leap forward that will happen this Sunday (March 13) at 2 a.m. provides an opportunity for researchers to see what the time shift — and the sleep loss that may accompany it — may do to our health. But while researchers have looked at a number of health trends surrounding the first day of daylight saving time -- including apparent upticks in accidents, heart attacks and suicides -- it’s unclear whether the adjusted clock setting is itself responsible for these health issues. “It’s not really understood why some of these health problems that are published coincide with the time change,” said Russell Rosenberg, vice chairman of the National ...

Red Alert in Japan: An Unfolding Nuclear Catastrophe - by Stephen Lendman Since March 12, a potentially unprecedented catastrophe has been unfolding in Japan, despite official denials and corroborating media reports - managed, not real news. Believe none of them. Nonetheless, on March 15, Reuters suggested what's ongoing, headlining: "Japan braces for potential radiation catastrophe," saying: "Japan faced potential catastrophe on Tuesday" after a fourth Fukushima reactor explosion, fire, and high-level radiation release, posing grave human health risks to an expanding area, including Toyko's 20 million population 170 miles south. The Miracle Berry: A Solution to World Hunger?

Is this our best weapon against famine? 43;A few years ago, we heard about the miracle berry, a cranberry-like fruit discovered in West Africa that tricks your mind into thinking sour and bitter foods are sweet. The berry, which comes from the Synsepalum dulcificum plant source and has the common name "miracle berry" (and sometimes "miracle fruit" or "sweet fruit"), emerged in the U.S. as a novelty, marketed on sites such as ThinkGeek with lines including, "Warp your taste buds" and "Fun for tasting parties." My sucker husband bought a pack, and lo and behold, they do work! Pop in a berry, and lemons taste like oranges. Tomatoes taste like ...

Peanut allergy traced to gene flaw

A gene defect that can triple the risk of a child developing an allergy to peanuts has been identified, scientists have said. An international research team led by Dundee University said it had made a "significant breakthrough" in understanding the disease. The gene responsible - Filaggrin - has already been shown to be a factor in causing eczema and asthma. Peanut allergy affects 1-2% of children in the UK and can be life-threatening. The number of people affected by the condition has increased dramatically over the past 20 to 30 years, the Dundee team said - but the causes of the allergy are unknown. Dr Sara Brown, a fellow at Dundee University, said investigating whether ...

Letter from Dr. Gerard F. Judd, Ph.D., Chemist, Researcher for 18 years, Professor of Chemistry for 33 yrs. April 2002 Dear Government Executive and Employee: We can all stop spending billions for American dental work and research. Let me tell you why: I have learned the real causes of dental cavities and gum infection. People, including you, will now be able to take care of their own dentistry with insignificant cost, and end with perfect teeth. Cavities and gum infections are ended! A great amount of REPUTABLE DENTAL RESEARCH proves the following: 1. Tooth cavities will be ended simply by rinsing acids off the teeth. ACIDS ALONE EAT THE ENAMEL. THERE WOULD BE NO CAVITIES IN THE ...
