How To Avoid Ten Common Surgical Procedures With Dietary Supplements Post Date: 2010-02-24 11:13:13 by Horse

The most recent data available shows there were 46 million inpatient and 53.3 million outpatient surgical procedures performed in the U.S. in 2006, representing about a third of the total population that lines up for operations annually, not counting dental procedures. Often there is little effort made to avert surgery. The rush to the operating room is what is most financially rewarding for physicians. Patients facing surgery for chronic or even urgent conditions may be able to forestall or avoid surgery altogether with the judicious use of dietary supplements. Ten such conditions that warrant surgery, which may be alleviated with dietary supplements, are presented below. Angina chest ...

Hot dog 'must be redesigned to reduce choking hazard' It is one of America's greatest fast food favourites but now doctors have declared the humble hot dog a choking risk to children. By Nick Allen in Los Angeles Published: 7:00AM GMT 23 Feb 2010 The respected American Academy of Paediatrics is calling for sweeping changes in the way hot dogs are designed and labelled to minimise the chances of youngsters dying. Every year food-related choking kills up to 77 children in the US and up to 15,000 more are treated in emergency rooms. About 17 per cent of the food-related chokings are caused by hot dogs, according to a report by the academy. It wants to see the shape of hot ...

Marijuana use by seniors goes up as boomers age By MATT SEDENSKY, Associated Press Writer Matt Sedensky, Associated Press Writer Mon Feb 22, 4:08 pm ET MIAMI In her 88 years, Florence Siegel has learned how to relax: A glass of red wine. A crisp copy of The New York Times, if she can wrest it from her husband. Some classical music, preferably Bach. And every night like clockwork, she lifts a pipe to her lips and smokes marijuana. Long a fixture among young people, use of the country's most popular illicit drug is now growing among the AARP set, as the massive generation of baby boomers who came of age in the 1960s and '70s grows older. The number of people aged 50 ...

People with high levels of vitamin D almost halve their risk of developing heart disease or diabetes, claim researchers. They found those with lowest levels of the vitamin in their blood were at greater risk of a range of serious disorders. The findings come from a review of 28 existing studies involving almost 100,000 people which looked at vitamin D levels among the middle-aged and elderly. The research team from Warwick Medical School discovered a 43 per cent lower risk of cardiovascular disease, Type 2 diabetes and metabolic syndrome among people with high levels of vitamin D. They claim most people can boost their vitamin D intake through diet and sun exposure - at lest 30 minutes ...

Anxiety is a Problem of Missing Brakes Post Date: 2010-02-18 11:41:35 by christine

A new study shows that individuals with anxiety have a disconnect of regulation between the frontal lobes of the conscious brain and a core regulating center in the subconscious brain (amygdala). In normal situations your frontal lobe thought process dampens and regulates the alarm coming from the amygdale, helping to keep negative emotions in check and under control. The new study shows for the first time that this method of self-regulation is lacking in people who have too much anxiety as a baseline of function. In essence, they are lacking anxiety brakes. I have written about this issue from several different angles in my previous articles Are Your Stress Brakes Working and ...
Health Insurance Costs: 'Shocking' Premium Increases Coming, Says Health And Human Services Dept. Post Date: 2010-02-18 10:53:36 by christine

WASHINGTON Eye-popping health insurance premium increases of up to 39 percent are not an exception but a worrisome sign of the times, the Obama administration said in a report Thursday. Proposed premium increases by Anthem Blue Cross for Californians purchasing their own coverage set off a wave of criticism and forced the company last week to announce a postponement. Now, the Health and Human Services Department says similar pressure on premiums is being felt in at least six other states. "This shocking increase isn't unique," said the report, being presented by Secretary Kathleen Sebelius at a news conference Thursday. "Across the country, families have seen ...

Studies have shown that just 1/2 teaspoon of cinnamon per day can lower LDL cholesterol. Several studies suggest that cinnamon may have a regulatory effect on blood sugar, making it especially beneficial for people with Type 2 diabetes. In some studies, cinnamon has shown an amazing ability to stop medication-resistant yeast infections. In a study published by researchers at the U.S. Department of Agriculture in Maryland, cinnamon reduced the proliferation of leukemia and lymphoma cancer cells. It has an anti-clotting effect on the blood. In a study at Copenhagen University, patients given half a teaspoon of cinnamon powder combined with one tablespoon of honey every morning before ...
A daily dose of garlic can save your life by cutting blood pressure, say researchers Post Date: 2010-02-13 14:51:53 by Horse

Garlic may lower blood pressure just as effectively as drugs, according to researchers. Scientists looked at 11 international studies in which patients were given a daily garlic supplement in powdered form for between three and five months. They found significant blood pressure falls among participants - with the greatest drops among those who had higher blood pressure readings to begin with. In some cases, the effects were similar to those achieved with common anti-blood pressure drugs, such as beta blockers and ACE inhibitors, said Dr Karin Ried, of Adelaide University in South Australia. More than 16million Britons have high blood pressure and many more are thought to suffer from it ...
Who owns your DNA? Book raises thorny issue Post Date: 2010-02-13 14:11:41 by scrapper2

No one cares about the untold numbers of cells our bodies slough off every day. But imagine that someone got hold of your cells and the DNA they contain and used them to cure a disease, or somehow managed to make a lot of money off of them. Should you be proud? Could you claim royalties? In short, who owns your cells once they leave your body? That was never a question Henrietta Lacks had the chance to face. A poor African-American tobacco farmer born in 1920, Lacks is the subject of Rebecca Skloot's new book "The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks" (Crown, February 2010). The book, which hit the New York Times bestseller list this week, brings many of these ...

Underlying this sensation is an often-overlooked network of neurons lining our guts that is so extensive some scientists have nicknamed it our "second brain". A deeper understanding of this mass of neural tissue, filled with important neurotransmitters, is revealing that it does much more than merely ...

To prevent cancer I personally take Vitamin D3 and daily consume Green Tea, Curry Powder, Turmeric and garlic. To treat cancer I personally would recommend some of the following: 1) Raising the ph level of the blood from slightly acid to slightly base. Do not take this at meal time as they interfere with digestion. Most people wait until two hours after dinner. An Italian doctor has been treating patients this way for 20 years. 2) I have seen posts on DCI here earlier at 4um. This is a cheap chemical. 3) I think that some of the ...

Breast cancer virtually "eradicated" with higher levels of vitamin D Post Date: 2010-02-10 11:52:26 by Horse

NaturalNews) In a gathering of vitamin D researchers recently held in Toronto, Dr. Cedric Garland delivered a blockbuster announcement: Breast cancer can be virtually "eradicated" by raising vitamin D levels. Vitamin D is "the cure" for breast cancer that the cancer industry ridiculously claims to be searching for. The cure already exists! But the breast cancer industry simply refuses to acknowledge any "cure" that doesn't involve mammography, chemotherapy or high-profit pharmaceuticals. Vitamin D is finally gaining some of the recognition it deserves as a miraculous anti-cancer nutrient. It is the solution for cancer prevention. It could save hundreds of ...

It is the culmination of an astonishing scandal that has been steadily building over the past decade. During this time Monsantos mutated seeds have grown to 90% of the U.S. soy crop and 85% of the corn crop and wheat is next on their agenda. Their efforts have been marked by corporate bullying and have drawn the attention of the Justice Department who is conducting an antitrust investigation. All the while they have been spending millions on lobbying to ...

Haiti Hospitals Fight Against TB Falls to One Man By IAN URBINA Published: February 5, 2010 PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti At a fly-infested clinic hastily erected alongside the rubble of the only tuberculosis sanatorium in this country, Pierre-Louis Monfort is a lonely man in a crowded room. Haiti has the highest tuberculosis rate in the Americas, and health experts say it is about to drastically increase. But amid the ramshackle remains of the hospital where the countrys most infected patients used to live, Mr. Monfort runs the clinic alone, facing a vastness of unmet need that is as clear as the desperation on the faces around the room. Is the U.S. swine flu epidemic over? Federal health officials won't go so far as to day that, but on Friday they reported for the fourth week in a row that no states had widespread flu activity. U.S. cases have been declining since October. An official with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says swine flu cases are still occurring and are likely to continue a while longer at some level. But another expert said a future large wave of cases now seems very unlikely. The expert, Vanderbilt University's Dr. William Schaffner, said the epidemic has "one foot in the grave."

Magnesium Helps Relieve Asthma Post Date: 2010-02-04 10:43:12 by christine

There is an epidemic of asthma in the United States. And magnesium is a common mineral deficiency, especially in the typical processed and junk food diets of so many of the children and young adults with asthma. A new study shows that those who took 370 mgs of magnesium per day had significant improvement in their asthma. Magnesium helps multiple issues involved with asthma. It helps to relax the airways, it helps energy production, and it reduces inflammation. In this study individuals were given magnesium for 6.5 months or placebo. The data showed that a standard test for measuring asthma (methacholine challenge test) was significantly improved, as was the peak expiratory flow rate. In ...

December 31, 2009 Safety of Beef Processing Method Is Questioned By MICHAEL MOSS Eight years ago, federal officials were struggling to remove potentially deadly E. coli from hamburgers when an entrepreneurial company from South Dakota came up with a novel idea: injecting beef with ammonia. The company, Beef Products Inc., had been looking to expand into the hamburger business with a product made from beef that included fatty trimmings the industry once relegated to pet food and cooking oil. The trimmings were particularly susceptible to contamination, but a study commissioned by the company showed that the ammonia process would kill E. coli as well as salmonella. Officials at the United ...

He emerged from the car accident alive but alone, there and not there: a young man whose eyes opened yet whose brain seemed shut down. For five years he lay mute and immobile beneath a diagnosis vegetative state that all but ruled out the possibility of thought, much less recovery. But in recent months at a clinic in Liège, Belgium, the patient, now 29, showed traces of brain activity in response to commands from doctors. Now, according to a new report, he has begun to communicate: in response to simple questions, like Do you have any brothers?, he showed distinct traces of activity on a brain imaging machine that represented either ...
