Customers of Blue Cross and Blue Shield of North Carolina are up in arms about a flier the company sent out urging their clientele to oppose health care reform -- shortly after sending out a notice informing them their health insurance rates would go up an average of 11 percent. "Indignant Blue Cross customers have rebelled against the insurer's message, complaining that their premium dollars have funded such a campaign," reports the Raleigh-Durham News & Observer. Over the past few days, Blue Cross customers have started a Web-based campaign to smother the insurance company's message. In its flier, Blue Cross had included a form letter to North Carolina Sen. Oct. 29 (Bloomberg) -- Swine flu may have infected as many as 5.7 million people in an initial wave that swept across the U.S. earlier this year, researchers at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and Harvard School of Public Health said. The number of swine flu patients in the U.S. in spring may have been up to 140 times greater than the reported number of confirmed cases, according to a study published in the CDC journal Emerging Infectious Diseases yesterday. A model used by the researchers to extrapolate total cases suggests 1.8 million to 5.7 million infections occurred from April to July. More than 414,945 people worldwide have caught the new H1N1 strain since the first ...

Many people fret about ageing, little realising that whatever your age in years, some of your body parts are just a few weeks, even days, old. This is because they are constantly renewing themselves. Here, Angela Epstein looks at how old you REALLY are... LIVER AGE: 5 MONTHS The liver is known for its amazing capacity to repair and re-grow itself thanks to its rich blood supply. This means it can continue with its main job of flushing toxins out of the body. If you've ever wondered why even heavy drinkers can sometimes improve the state of their liver, it's because liver cells only have a life span of around 150 days. 'I can take 70 per cent of a person's liver away ...

(10-28) 13:51 PDT CHICAGO, (AP) -- Across the country schools are closing by the dozen as officials say they're being hit so hard by swine flu that they feel shutting down for a few days is the only feasible option. The U.S. Education Department says at least 351 schools were closed last week alone — affecting 126,000 students in 19 states. So far this school year, about 600 total schools have temporarily closed. The number of closures this year appears on target to surpass the roughly 700 schools closed last spring when the swine flu outbreak first hit. Flu season hasn't peaked yet, and each day more schools are closing. The superintendent of Connecticut's Middletown ...

An October 19, 2009 article in the Washington Times examined federal health agencies that have spent millions of taxpayer dollars to study gun "safety." According to the article, the National Institutes of Health (NIH) is currently financing research “to investigate whether having many liquor stores in a neighborhood puts people at greater risk of getting shot." The Times reports: The NIH, which administers more than $30 billion in taxpayer funds for medical research, defended the grants. "Gun related violence is a public health problem - it diverts considerable health care resources away from other problems and, therefore, is of interest to NIH," Don ...

Free Market Healthcare Alternative to Obamacare

The cost of medical services rise each year faster than the rate of inflation. There are many reasons for this, but one primary reason, seldom discussed, is the effect of Medicare on those costs. Because any change to the Medicare entitlement brings with it shrieks that the sky will fall, no serious free market alternative has ever been entertained in Congress. Nevertheless, if we are to avoid destroying the American economy by saddling the nation with insurmountable debt, there is but one true alternative to Obamacare and that is a true free market in medical services. Medicare is the archetypical example of socialized medicine that Obamacare will promote and expand. Under Medicare, ...

Obama's H1N1 National Emergency Declaration Could Invoke FEMA Response To Pandemic

(NaturalNews) President Obama's declaration of a national pandemic emergency is "no cause for alarm," reported the mainstream media throughout the weekend. The declaration is nothing more than a "precaution," they say. "It's really more a continuation of our preparedness steps," said Anne Schuchat, director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's National Center for Immunization and Respiratory Diseases, in a USA Today story. In other words, there's not really any emergency at all. So why declare a national emergency in the first place? The media reports this was done to allow hospitals to bypass federal regulations concerning the ...

The swine flu pandemic will result in a £1.5bn boost for the UK’s two drug giants, according to analysts’ estimates. Although the numbers will not be included in third-quarter results due to be released this week, GlaxoSmithKline and AstraZeneca are expected to reap significant financial rewards for vaccines they have been rushing to release over the last few months. Analysts expect sales of GSK’s Pandemrix to hit £1bn in the fourth quarter, while its anti-viral treatment Relenza could hit £180m. AstraZeneca’s nasal spray vaccine could reach £275m of revenue over the last three months of the year. Although there has been a relative lull ...

GAO: FDA fails to follow up on unproven drugs By MATTHEW PERRONE, AP Business Writer Matthew Perrone, Ap Business Writer – 39 mins ago WASHINGTON – The Food and Drug Administration has allowed drugs for cancer and other diseases to stay on the market even when follow-up studies showed they didn't extend patients' lives, say congressional investigators. A report due out Monday from the Government Accountability Office also shows that the FDA has never pulled a drug off the market due to a lack of required follow-up about its actual benefits — even when such information is more than a decade overdue. When pressed about that policy, agency officials said they have no ...

Public option likely to be managed by private insurance company By John Byrne Saturday, October 24th, 2009 -- 7:31 am Share on Facebook Stumble This! A little-noticed tidbit in Saturday's Washington Post is sure to raise eyebrows among liberal supporters of a gorvernment-run healthcare plan: the plan is likely to be administered by a private insurance company, the very companies that progressive activists are trying to unseat. The public-option debate is frustrating some Democrats, who have come to believe that a government-run plan is neither as radical as its conservative critics have portrayed, nor as important as its liberal supporters contend. Any public plan is likely to ...

Do You Know What's Inside a Flu Shot? Posted By Dr. Ben Kim on Oct 21, 2009 Health WarningsMust-See Videos Each year, just as multiple reminders on the need for and efficacy of getting a flu shot hit the news wires, I start receiving a steady stream of e-mails from readers, all asking the same basic question: "Should I get a flu shot?" My answer is an unequivocal no. I never recommend getting a flu shot. Based on everything that I know about flu shots, I think it's pretty clear that their main effect is to tax and possibly weaken one's immune system. Before I highlight my main reasons for saying no to flu shots, please have a look at the following skit by the ...

Who drives the abortion industry in the United States? Want to hazard a guess? If you said that the main movers and shakers behind the pro-abortion movement in the U.S. are Jews, you win the grand prize. While there are, of course, pro-life Jews who are disturbed by the abortion rates in both the United States and Israel, I would venture to say that they are certainly in the minority, especially in the U.S. Their low regard for Gentile life at any stage of development is reflected in the number of abortions performed by Jewish doctors (about half of all abortion providers are Jewish) in Jewish owned “women’s clinics” (about a half of all such clinics are owned by Jews) ...

Hoyer Says Constitution’s ‘General Welfare’ Clause Empowers Congress to Order Americans to Buy Health Insurance

House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer (D-Md.) said that the individual health insurance mandates included in every health reform bill, which require Americans to have insurance, were “like paying taxes.” He added that Congress has “broad authority” to force Americans to purchase other things as well, so long as it was trying to promote “the general welfare.” The Congressional Budget Office, however, has stated in the past that a mandate forcing Americans to buy health insurance would be an “unprecedented form of federal action,” and that the “government has never required people to buy any good or service as a condition of lawful residence in the ...
