COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. -- In the hush of a Sunday morning, 9,000 believers grieved, struggled and forgave as their pastor, the Rev. Ted Haggard, confessed his sins. "I am a deceiver and a liar," Haggard told his followers in a letter read from the pulpit of New Life Church by one of his spiritual mentors. "There's a part of my life that is so repulsive and dark that I have been warring against it for all of my adult life." Men rubbed at their eyes. Women clung to one another. A grandfather hugged his baby grandson. Haggard had founded this church in his basement. He had grown it to a congregation of 14,000. He had guided them to God and helped them triumph over sin, ...

Republicans distance themselves from disgraced evangelical

THE Bush administration and the religious Right have nervously sought to distance themselves from disgraced evangelical leader Reverend Ted Haggard after allegations that the father of five had led a double life, using drugs and regularly paying for sex with a male prostitute. The White House was trying to play down Mr Haggard's political influence after he was forced to resign as head of the powerful National Association of Evangelicals, which claims 30 million members, when Colorado bodybuilder Mike Jones went public about his alleged three-year relationship with the 50-year-old married pastor. In a television interview over the weekend, Mr Haggard - who has publicly condemned ...

The following was written by a man that I have just become acquainted with, and I found this paper to be of very great interest. Perhaps you will as well. This is one of the groups that I belong to and which is researching means and methods of making ourselves seperate, as we are commanded to be. As you read this, please consider reading the post, God is Eternal as well. Also, the link below is to a group which is working on a Jural Society handbook. Persecution Many people believe that we are supposed to change the world. This is dangerous, and wrong. We are not called to change the world. We are called to change ourselves, show forth pure honor, and in God's time the world will follow. ...

The Drawbacks of Pure Secular Reason, especially in the midst of Hurricane Katrina

The Drawbacks of Pure Secular Reason, especially in the midst of Hurricane Katrina by Mark and Louise Zwick As we were trying to write this article about putting flesh on the Gospel in the world, we were constantly interrupted by telephone calls from desperate people, a weeping, battered woman with a battered upbringing, Spanish-speaking immigrants arriving from New Orleans and Mississippi from Hurricane Katrina seeking shelter, and one person after another with serious medical problems threatened with homelessness. Families started arriving who had taken in up to 20 refugees from the hurricane in their homes to ask for food. A Houston Police person suggested we should put the ...

The Economic Religion of Michael Novak: Wealth Creation vs. the Gospel, as in Using Catholicism to Prop up Neoconservatism

The Economic Religion of Michael Novak: Wealth Creation vs. the Gospel, as in Using Catholicism to Prop up Neoconservatism by Mark and Louise Zwick [page 1 of 3] There has been tremendous interest in the March April 1999 issue of the Houston Catholic Worker on Pope John Paul II's condemnation of neoliberalism in Ecclesia in America, not to mention those who were so excited to discover the document itself in all its richness. Most of our readers understood clearly that neoliberalism, the current economic system hurting the people of Latin America so badly (as well as Eastern Europe, Africa and much of Asia) was condemned. But many asked again, what is the exact connection between the ...

Liberal Economics vs. Catholic Truth by John Sharpe A final defense of Distributism [Editor's Note: I would like to take this time to thank all those who contributed to this lively informal debate on the topic of Catholicism and economics, including Mr. Sharpe, Mr. Clark, Br. Bugnolo and Dr. Woods. To wrap up this current discussion and in response to numerous reader requests to hear from the Distributist side once more, Mr. Sharpe has been asked to provide a final rebuttal.] A word of thanks to Mr. Miller of Seattle Catholic for the opportunity to respond to Mr. Clark's response to my response, etc., etc. I will attempt in what follows to summarize the results of our exchange, and ...

“And Mary said to the angel, "How shall this be, since I have no husband?" And the angel said to her, "The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you; therefore the child to be born will be called holy, the Son of God. And behold, your kinswoman Elizabeth in her old age has also conceived a son; and this is the sixth month with her who was called barren. For with God nothing will be impossible." (The Gospel of Luke 2:34-37) And Mary said, "Behold, I am the servant of the Lord; let it be to me according to your word." And the angel departed from her. (Luke 2:38) The so called “practical people” are not ...

Saints Alive!

The other day a friend reminded me of a story that goes like this: a man ran up and down the streets of his town shouting, “We must put God in our lives!” Hearing this, an old monk shook his head and said, “You’re wrong. God is already in our lives. Our task is simply to recognize that.” It seems to me that the people who do recognize – and respond to – the presence of God in their lives are the saints among us. Now, I realize that lots of people think that saints must be super human – far beyond the capability of the rest of us mere mortals. But that’s not my idea at all. I think saints are simply men and women who have taken the word – ...

Outside, gray clouds scudded damply across the spring sky. Inside, a continuous procession passed by the woman’s bedside. “People came to pray near her, to bring her a last token of affection,” her husband recalled years later. “I thus saw in my home numbers of people whom I did not know, whom I had never seen before, and who gave free vent to their sincere and touching grief.” So many attended her funeral, expressing such emotion, that the clergy present asked in utter astonishment, “Who was this woman?” She was Elisabeth Arrighi Leseur, born and raised in Paris in the second half of the nineteenth century. She died just forty-eight years later, on the ...

Dear Brothers and Sisters: On completing today the review of the Twelve Apostles called directly by Jesus during his earthly life, we cannot fail to mention the one who always appears in the last place: Judas Iscariot. We want to associate him with the person who was later chosen to substitute him, namely, Matthias. The name Judas alone arouses among Christians an instinctive reaction of reprobation and condemnation. The meaning of the name "Iscariot" is controversial: The most used explanation says that it means "man from Queriyyot," in reference to his native village, located in the surroundings of Hebron, mentioned twice in sacred Scripture (cf. Joshua 15:25; Amos ...

Richard Dawkins VS. Evangelical Pastor Ted Haggard Richard Dawkins, perhaps the world leader in evolutionary biology visits the bible belt in America and questions Ted Haggard. Haggard clearly gets owned, and gets a bit out of control towards the end. Also, watch Dawkins face after Haggard asks him about the eyes...I thought Dawkins was going to swing at him.

TURKEY IN TRANSITION Less Europe, More Islam

For almost half a century, Turkey has been pursuing European Union membership. With negotiations now started though, enthusiasm is waning. And the influence of Islam is on the rise. At first glance, the "Sah Inn Suite" Hotel in Alanya looks no different from the average sunny resort along the Turkish Mediterranean coast: a bulky construction with a honeycomb of balconies, looking out over a generous swimming pool surrounded by parasols and lounge chairs. But, in fact, only men are allowed to take a refreshing plunge into these shimmering blue waters. Women vacationers at the Sah-Hotel swim in a strictly isolated pool for women. And what about a cold beer? Forget it. There is no ...

Creationist Dr. Dino goes to jail Kent "Dr. Dino" Hovind, founder of Creation Science Evangelism and the Dinosaur Adventure Land creationist theme park in Florida ("where Dinosaurs and the Bible meet!"), and his wife face more than 200 years in jail for tax fraud. (Previous post with background here.) Yesterday, Dr. Dino was found guilty on 58 counts, including not paying an $845,000 employee-related tax bill. From the Pensacola News Journal: U.S. District Judge Casey Rodgers released Jo Hovind until sentencing but denied Kent Hovind's request to be released. He most likely will be detained at either Escambia County Jail or Santa Rosa County Jail until sentencing. ...

What is Eternity?

When I was 8 or 9 years old, I read something, (in a Catholic school of all places!) that has stayed with me for more than 40 years. To say that this created a powerful picture in my mind is a serious understatement, and I would like to share it with you. Eternity. That is a word we use, but what picture does it bring up? Because it is something that is so far beyond anything that we can imagine...... Picure a 1,000 feet in diameter solid steel ball floating in space. A bird flies by and just brushes the steel ball with it´s wing. In 1,000 years, the bird returns, and once again, flies by and brushes the steel ball with its wing. Thereafter, every 1,000 years, the bird returns and ...

In one of the many groups to which I belong, I posted this in response to a question from a member. Perhaps it may explain something to a few. So what should we do..... Excellent question. Perhaps I can add something here. The first thing we should do is to start at the beginning... Perhaps that would make things easier. In an earlier post, I mentioned that the first thing that I found and latched onto in the Bible was the Perfection of God, and this is important, but what that did was lead me next to the beginning; God is Eternal. And I think, at least I hope, that this is something that everyone in this group can agree upon, that God is Eternal. But what does it mean? OK, God is ...

The real meaning of god

I have mentioned a numbr of times that I do not vote... does anyone wonder why? Perhaps, if you begin to understand the meaning of words that everyone takes for granted, some small measure of understanding can begin. Theos vs.God GODS MANY For though there be that are called gods, whether in heaven or in earth, (as there be gods many, and lords many,) 1 Corinthians 8:5 In the days of Jacob and Egypt, Joseph's brothers delivered their brother into bondage as a result of their own selfishness, envy and covetous hearts. Had they not done this Joseph's relation with God would have revealed to them the coming events and they, not Egypt would have prepared for the famine. The sons of Jacob ...

Unopened letters to God are discarded

ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. — Some of the letters are comical (a man asking God to let him win the lottery, twice), others are heartbreaking (a distraught teen asking forgiveness for an abortion, an unwed mother pleading with God to make the baby’s father marry her). The letters — about 300 in all, sent to a New Jersey minister — ended up dumped in the ocean, most of them unopened. The minister died two years ago at 79. How the letters, some dating to 1973, wound up bobbing in the surf is a mystery. “There are hundreds of lives here, a lot of struggle, washed up on the beach,” said Bill Lacovara, a Ventnor insurance adjuster who was fishing last month with his son ...

He has no photograph of his grandmother. But he wrote next to the altar: "I will always carry her in my heart." Emma S. Gonzalez built an altar, too. Hers was in remembrance of "my unforgettable mother." She draped her altar with samples of needlepoint and crochet, two of her mother's favorite pastimes. The Flat Earth Myth: The real myth is the idea that anyone ever believed in a flat earth

The Flat Earth Myth The real myth is the idea that anyone ever believed in a flat earth by Thomas E. Woods, Jr. In the course of promoting my new book, How the Catholic Church Built Western Civilization, I have made the point that major historians of science today no longer hold the simplistic position that "religion" has been nothing but an obstacle to "science." This contention doubtless comes as a surprise to some people, since most of us have gone through life hearing and being taught that very idea. The standard view was given its classical expression by Andrew Dickson White (1832–1918) in his two-volume History of the Warfare of Science with Theology in ...

The Fighting Faith by Harry W. Crocker III What book, first published in 1929, predicted the rise of Hitler, the imminent closing of the American mind, multiculturalism, and resurgent Islam? The answer is Hilaire Belloc’s Survivals and New Arrivals. This year marks the tenth anniversary of its republication for an American audience by TAN Books and Publishers. It remains a polemical gem, and as relevant as it ever was. Its thesis is certainly provocative: The foundation stone of Western Civilization is, says Belloc, the Catholic Church, no educated person doubts this; it is the source of truth, beauty, and freedom; and the best measure of the health of Western Civilization is, ...

Are ‘religious right’ voters really concerned about Christianity or filthy lucre?

Are ‘religious right’ voters really concerned about Christianity or filthy lucre? By Lee Salisbury Oct 27, 2006, 14:34 ‘Religious right’ voters are generally nice, well-intentioned people who want what is best for our children and grandchildren. They proclaim their political opinions reflect faith in their Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. The problem many have who also want what is best for America and also read the bible are the biblical contradictions and misplaced emphasis in the ‘religious right’ positions. For instance, many ‘religious right’ voters suggest God is offended unless we have government-sponsored prayer in public schools. Do they care ...

It’s been a long day for Mike Grace. After a hectic training session at Shore Mortgage in Birmingham, where he’s learning to be a loan officer, he stops by the KFC next door for a bite to eat with his wife. He's dressed in an olive, freshly pressed button-down shirt and subtly patterned tie, and his light brown hair is conservatively shorn: the picture-perfect subdued-yet-friendly all-American salesman. On the Formica table, next to the Original Recipe crumbs, sits a small black book. The cover is illustrated with an inverted pentagram; its author is Anton LaVey, the founder of the Church of Satan. Few would guess this average-looking man, with his boyish face and fondness of ...
