08/03/06 "Information Clearing House" -- -- On August 6, 1945 the United States dropped an atomic bomb on Hiroshima. Three days later, the US dropped another atomic bomb on Nagasaki. These nuclear weapons killed over 100,000 people, almost all civilians, and injured many tens of thousands more. Fr. Carl Kabat, 72, Greg Boertje-Obed, 51, and Michael Walli, 57, sit in jail in North Dakota awaiting a federal criminal trial because of weapons of mass destruction and because of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. I visited them last week. Their crime? They tried to disarm one of the 1700+ nuclear weapons in North Dakota. On June 26, 2006, they went to the silo of a Minuteman III first-strike ...
Evolution Opponents Lose Control Of Kansas Board of Education Post Date: 2006-08-02 12:21:57 by Brian S

TOPEKA, Kan. Conservative Republicans who pushed anti-evolution standards back into Kansas schools last year have lost control of the state Board of Education once again. The most closely watched race was in western Kansas, where incumbent conservative Connie Morris lost her GOP primary Tuesday. The former teacher had described evolution as an age-old fairy tale and a nice bedtime story unsupported by science. As a result of Tuesday's vote, board members and candidates who believe evolution is well-supported by evidence will have a 6-4 majority. Evolution skeptics had entered the election with a 6-4 majority. Critics of Kansas' science standards worried ...
'Dual Covenant' Theory: Christian Zionists and the Strangest Alliance in History Post Date: 2006-08-02 07:56:42 by Zoroaster

August 2, 2006 'Dual Covenant' Theory Christian Zionists and the Strangest Alliance in History by Jon Basil Utley The major internal conflict for the strangest alliance in history is about what will happen to Jews who don't convert to evangelical Christianity. The Armageddonites, those 30 million Americans who happily see Mideast chaos as hastening their one-way trip to paradise, are being increasingly questioned about the fate of Jews whom they urge to help fulfill the prophecies. Once their death wish agenda is realized, the end-of-the-worlders believe that Buddhists, Hindus, Muslims (of course), other Christians (apparently including Catholics and Orthodox), and all the rest of ...
Evangelicals militant when it comes to Israel, End of Days Post Date: 2006-08-01 00:57:08 by Morgana le Fay

MISSILES and rockets are falling all over the Galilee. A bomb even hit Nazareth, where it killed two small Muslim children (Sheik Hassan Nasrallah, commander of the Religion of Peace, Hezbollah branch, apologized for the mistake; he had been aiming at Jews). But through it all, peace and tranquillity have reigned over Kibbutz Megiddo. This is bad news if you're one of those people who happen to be looking forward to the end of the world. To the untrained eye, Megiddo is just another Israeli farm community attached to an archaeological dig and tourist gift shop. But tens of millions of evangelical Christians know it as Armageddon, the biblical battleground for the coming war between Jesus ...

Churches Putting Town Out of Business Stafford, Texas, has 51 tax-exempt religious institutions and wants no more: `Somebody's got to pay for police, fire and schools.' By Lianne Hart Times Staff Writer July 31, 2006 STAFFORD, Texas They are not the words one expects to hear from a politician or a Southerner, and Leonard Scarcella is both: "Our city has an excessive number of churches." Scarcella is mayor of this Houston-area community, which has 51 churches and other religious institutions packed into its 7 square miles. With some 300 undeveloped, potentially revenue-producing acres left in Stafford, officials are scrambling to find a legal way to keep more ...
Rev. John Hagee's War, The Manchurian Clergyman Post Date: 2006-07-30 23:08:31 by Zoroaster

Weekend Edition July 29/30 2006 Rev. John Hagee's War The Manchurian Clergyman By WERTHER In the 1920s, explaining the growing phenomenon of religious fundamentalism and how it battened Prohibition upon a suffering nation, H.L. Mencken described Southern Baptism as "a theology degraded almost to the level of voodoo." Eighty years on, we could remark, "plus ça change, plus c'est la même chose," but we would be wrong. Things have not remained the same, they have deteriorated. For if there is one thing worse than Elmer Gantry, it is Elmer Gantry with a foreign policy. Not content with polluting the fields of evolutionary biology and stem-cell research ...

Irish museum clarifies mix-up over Israel bog text Updated: 11:24 a.m. PT July 27, 2006 DUBLIN - An ancient Irish manuscript found in a bog last week does not refer to "wiping out Israel", the National Museum of Ireland said on Thursday, after a flood of enquiries wondering at the timing of the discovery. The National Museum of Ireland announced on Tuesday what it said was one of the most significant Irish discoveries in decades; an ancient Psalter or Book of Psalms, written around 800 AD. It said part of Psalm 83 was legible. In modern versions of the Bible, Psalm 83 is a lament to God over other nations' attempts to wipe out Israel and many commentators wondered at the ...

The Christian Right: Not Right, Not Following Christ Charles E. Carlson Jul 24, 2006 Christian Right pastors and spokesmen in thousands of churches swear that Israel has a biblical right to bomb Gaza and Lebanon. They teach that to resist Israel is to interfere with Gods Plan. The normally Israeli-sympathetic network media is giving wings to the neo-theology of the Christian Right. We continue to examine the scriptural error and the medias willingness to support it. A recent story in the Baltimore Sun reveals a rare honest glimpse of the weapons superiority of Israel over Lebanons rebel Hezbollah. While The Sun report made little mention of Israel's offensive weapons ...

New Square is the anglicized form of Skvira, a village in Ukraine, where the Skver Hasidim dynasty of Hasidism had its roots. The community began in 1954, when twenty Skver families moved from Williamsburg, Brooklyn to a 130 acre (530,000 m²) farm north of Spring Valley, under the leadership of their rebbe Rabbi Yakov Yosef Twersky. In 1961 New Square became the first village in New York state to be governed by a religious group. Over the years annexations have increased its size. Its population increased 77.5% between 1990 and 2000. New Square's success motivated the Satmar Hasidim headed by their own rebbe Rabbi Joel Teitelbaum to plan and build their own version of a town governed ...

Rabbi Michael Lerner This week's guest is Rabbi Michael Lerner, a social theorist, theologian, psychotherapist and the editor of the magazine Tikkun. Rabbi Lerner's new book, "The left hand of God" is an analysis of American policy and an outline to show the left wing in America how to regain its effectiveness and power in society. (Read Lerner's bio on Wikipedia here). Those of you who would like to ask questions can send them to rosnersdomain@haaretz.co.il. Rabbi Lerner In your book you write that "the left consistently attacked religion and spirituality," and call upon the people of the left not to be afraid of some "spiritual vision." How do you think ...

Greek Orthodox Church warns Israel: 'Fear God's wrath' The leader of Greece's Orthodox Church, Archbishop Christodoulos, accused Israel on Sunday of "sacrificing innocent civilians" in its bombardment of Lebanon. "Israel's actions within its right to self defense have long exceeded any rational limit," Christodoulos said on Sunday. "[They are] sacrificing innocent civilians by the hundreds, and creating refugees by the thousands," he added, telling the Israeli authorities, "Do not provoke our consciences. Do not feed the world condemnation against you. It is not in your interest...Fear God's wrath." The church has played a lead role in sheltering ...

The Gods An honest God is the Noblest Work of Man. Each nation has created a god, and the god has always resembled his creators. He hated and loved what they hated and loved, and he was invariably found on the side of those in power. Each god was intensely patriotic, and detested all nations but his own. All these gods demanded praise, flattery, and worship. Most of them were pleased with sacrifice, and the smell of innocent blood has ever been considered a divine perfume. All these gods have insisted upon having a vast number of priests, and the priests have always insisted upon being supported by the people, and the principal business of these priests has been to boast about their god, ...

Dobson and Falwell: The Leaders of the Religious Right By: John Amato @ 6:30 PM - PDT Ive talked about both these men at length. Arthur has two posts that explain a lot about how they behave today, Its very interesting that they have so much influence over the Republican party. Does it all into the authoritarian mode that John Dean has written about? Arthur: For Dobson, there is no difference at all between dachshunds and children. They are both to be beaten with belts as necessary, they are both to be crushed using whatever means are required no matter how brutal and monstrous, and they are both to be made to obey above all

Chumrot: More Isn't Always Better Rabbi Shaya Karlinsky Cheshvan 5760 The issue of chumrot - knowing in which cases to take stringent approaches in halakha -- breeds much confusion among those who are newly religious, often leading to imbalance in their development. This has been born out by our experience in educating ba'alei teshuva at Darche Noam for over twenty years. The mainstream Orthodox community's own uncertainty over this issue during the last decade or two (frequently breaking loose from their own tradition) has only made the ba'al tshuva's situation - with no clear tradition to follow -- more difficult. Rav Shlomo Volbe, shlita, (Alei Shur, V.2 in a chapter entitled ...
Misyar offers marriage-lite in strict Saudi society Post Date: 2006-07-19 20:08:37 by robin

RIYADH (Reuters) - Khaled never thought a form of temporary marriage, described by some in Saudi Arabia as legal prostitution, would open the door to his happily-ever-after. The 25-year-old Saudi security guard opted to marry Zeinab, also a Saudi, through a "misyar" contract -- a kind of marriage-lite under which couples often live separately but get together regularly, sometimes just for sex. Khaled and Zeinab are among thousands of people who choose misyar in this ultraconservative Islamic kingdom where contact between unrelated men and women is forbidden and extramarital sex regarded as a grave sin. Misyar also offers an alternative to cash-strapped men who want to avoid ...

Alison, my classmate from the University of Pennsylvania who is currently in the process of converting to Judaism, gasped at the harshness of the words delivered stoically by her boyfriends mother. He succumbed to intense pressure from his parents to end the relationship, while she was subjected to a cascade of accusations: Converts are not welcome in my family. No Jewish boy will ever want to marry you. You are inadequate to raise Jewish children. I felt like someone ...

Beat 'em for Jesus! The unhappy childhood of Dr. James DobsonPosted 9:18 am | Printer Friendly Guest Post by Morbo Have you ever wondered why Dr. James Dobson of Focus on the Family is such a nutcase? Why is he so obsessed with the sex lives of people he doesn't even know? Why does he hate gay people so much? Why does he claim to love Jesus so much, and then behave in a vicious manner so unlike Christ? A recent profile of Dobson sheds some light on these questions. As it turns out, Dobson's parents physically and mentally abused him as a child, and he once got beaten up in school by a kid even Dobson admits was widely acknowledged to be a "sissy." The article in a Denver ...

July 14 / 17, 2006 War-Monger in the Pulpit The Rev. Billy Graham is No Phil Berrigan By WILLIAM HUGHES Baltimore. "Phil Berrigan took the Gospel...personally!" - Martin Sheen The Rev. Billy Graham, now 87 years old and once a crony of the disgraced President, Richard M. Nixon, was in town recently doing his evangelical thing. He rallied the faithful at Camden Yards, located near Harborplace, over a three day period. Graham' call, according to his PR flacks, brought crowds estimated at 83,000 to the baseball facility, including about 3,200, who made the big decision to "dedicate their lives to Christ." Camden Yards sits near a site, that once housed a pub owned by ...

BEDFORD Diamond heir Bruce Winston and his wife, Barbara, put their Mayan temple replica on a particular spot on their 13-acre Katonah estate to "take full advantage of the sun," their lawyer said, but that didn't appease the zoning gods this week. The couple's choice to erect the roughly 9-foot-high lawn monument which the Winstons say is a 1/17th-sized replica of a Guatemalan temple about 25 feet from the property line of their disapproving neighbor was rejected by the Zoning Board of Appeals. "Just because (the neighbor) doesn't like it, that doesn't make it a detriment. That's personal taste," attorney Michael Sirignano argued unsuccessfully ...
