LINTHICUM, Md. -- The United Methodist Church reversed itself Friday, deciding to reinstate a lesbian minister who was defrocked after revealing her relationship with another woman. A church panel voted 8 to 1 to set aside an earlier decision to defrock Irene "Beth" Stroud for violating the church's ban on openly gay clergy. The Philadelphia minister said she was relieved by the ruling and hopes the church will become more inclusive to people regardless of sexual orientation. After Stroud disclosed the relationship to her congregation two years ago, the church defrocked her, meaning that she could no longer serve communion or baptize anyone. She kept the title of associate ...

Mystical message of sacrifices By EPHRAIM SPRECHER The question of animal sacrifices during Temple times is something that can be difficult for us to understand today. According to the Ramban (Nahmanides), the primary purpose of the sacrifice was that by being involved in the slaughter of an animal, the sinner bringing it would also experience vicarious death. When the kohen (priest) slaughtered the animal and burned it on the altar, the aim was that the person bringing it would feel as though he himself had been killed and burned for having gone against the word of God. God gave man the power of intellect so that he would be able to perfect himself. When a person sins, it is as if he ...

Pope Benedict XVI greets the faithful in St Peter's Square yesterday after being invested After being invested with the symbols of his office, a pallium, or wool scarf, and the papal fisherman's ring, the pontiff obliquely criticised both political tyrannies and environmental degradation. His message was delivered softly but firmly to a crowd of 500,000 packing St Peter's Square, including ...

The First Book of Adam and Eve part of the "Forgotten" books of Eden The First Book of Adam and Eve details the life and times of Adam and Eve after they were expelled from the garden to the time that Cain kills his brother Abel. It tells of Adam and Eve's first dwelling - the Cave of Treasures; their trials and temptations; Satan's many apparitions to them; the birth of Cain, Abel, and their twin sisters; and Cain's love for his beautiful twin sister, Luluwa, whom Adam and Eve wished to join to Abel. This book is considered by many scholars to be part of the "Pseudepigrapha" books. The "Pseudepigrapha" is a collection of historical biblical works that are ...

THE FORGOTTEN BOOKS OF EDEN Translated in the late 1800's by Dr. S. C. Malan and Dr. E. Trumpp. Translated into King James English from both the Arabic version and the Ethiopic version which was then published in The Forgotten Books of Eden in 1927 by The World Publishing Company. THE FIRST BOOK OF Adam and Eve ALSO CALLED The Conflict of Adam and Eve with Satan. PRESENT day controversy that rages around the authenticity of the Scriptures and how human life began on this planet must pause to consider the Adam and Eve story. Where does it come from? What does it mean? The familiar version in Genesis is not the source of this fundamental legend, it is not a spontaneous, Heaven-born ...

The Lost City of Ugarit The Birthplace of the Alphabet, Syria The road to Lattakia goes over the Anti-Lebanon Range. I had left Aleppo under a blue sky at noon; now a thick fog rolls in, tall conifers appear in the valleys, visibility drops. The pop Arabic music in the bus gets louder but does not deter my fellow passengers from dozing. Handsome villages with brick houses, clean streets and small domed mosques appear now and again. We stop at a rest area with gift shops and restaurants and arrive in Lattakia by early evening. I take a cab to the city center and find a hotel. It is my tenth day in Syria. Lattakia lies on the Mediterranean coast and is one of Syria's most modern towns. ...

Confidential letter reveals Ratzinger ordered bishops to keep allegations secret Pope Benedict XVI faced claims last night he had 'obstructed justice' after it emerged he issued an order ensuring the church's investigations into child sex abuse claims be carried out in secret. The order was made in a confidential letter, obtained by The Observer, which was sent to every Catholic bishop in May 2001. It asserted the church's right to hold its inquiries behind closed doors and keep the evidence confidential for up to 10 years after the victims reached adulthood. The letter was signed by Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger, who was elected as John Paul II's successor last week. Lawyers acting for ...

The Third Secret Reveals the Great Chastisement by Father Paul Kramer, B.Ph., S.T.B., M.Div., S.T.L. (Cand.) The late Father Malachi Martin stated in his last interview on the Art Bell Show (1998) that there was something ghastly and horrifying in the Third Secret of Fatima. It is not the annihilation of nations, nuclear war or the bloody persecution of the Church. It is something much worse. Pope Pius XII referred to this when he declared in 1945, "The world is on the verge of a frightful abyss ... Men must prepare themselves for suffering such as mankind has never seen." The Third Secret is apocalyptic and therefore corresponds to the eschatological texts of Sacred Scripture. ...

David Ray Griffin asks the tough questions about Sept. 11, contending U.S. officials had some knowledge of what was coming and possibly orchestrated the attacks. Griffin, whose book, "The New Pearl Harbor: Disturbing Questions About the Bush Administration and 9/11," came out a year ago, drew an enthusiastic standing ovation from the majority of the 400 or so people who packed his lecture Monday night at Bascom Hall. A retired Christian theologian, Griffin, 65, taught for more than 30 years at the Claremont School of Theology in California. His comments Monday night were directed at religious people, who he said need to respond to Sept. 11 - and the American empire that has ...

Women send up pink smoke to protest male-only conclave to elect pope CHICAGO (CNS) -- Before the cardinals locked into the Sistine Chapel had a chance to cast their first ballot April 18, a group protesting the lack of women's voices in the conclave gathered outside Holy Name Cathedral in Chicago to send up billows of bright pink smoke along with prayers for women to be heard. The event featured statements from several organizations supporting the ordination of women that called on the church to open its doors fully to women's participation. "At a time when young women are sold into slavery around the world, when war brings the rape of women, when it is women and children who suffer ...

On sighting the Eternal City he fell to the ground and began murmuring cryptic Latin phrases, each signifying the future destiny of the popes. For four hundred years the manuscript was locked in the labyrinth ...

ROME, April 16 - There was never doubt that Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger, the Vatican's hard-line defender of the faith, would have a strong hand in selecting the next pope. But in the days of prayer and politics before the conclave, which begins on Monday, he has emerged as perhaps the surprise central figure: the man who could become the 265th pope, choose him or be the one other cardinals knock from the running. Any talk of who will become the next pope is guesswork, echoes from cardinals and their staffs sworn to silence about one of the world's most elite and secretive gatherings. But one bit of wisdom has emerged in the Italian press as conventional: that Cardinal Ratzinger, a German ...

The only question is why? He first came to the attention of much of the public back in 2002 when news of the sex scandals in the Roman Catholic Church were making headlines around the world causing considerable consternation everywhere but in the Vatican. In January of that year the defrocked Boston priest, John J. Geoghan was convicted of indecent assault and battery in a case of sexual abuse of a young boy in 1991. Although that was the only conviction of Mr. Geoghan, he was accused of ...

PITTSBURGH -- An evangelical Christian talk show host who questioned the beliefs of the Catholic church and entertained a caller's question about whether the late Pope John Paul II would go to heaven has been fired. Marty Minto, 39, a senior pastor at a New Castle church, was fired Friday after three years as a host on WORD-FM in Pittsburgh. He said he was told that he was alienating listeners. "As far as I'm concerned, I was doing what I've always done on the radio -- look at events around the world from a biblical perspective. I've always been willing to talk about controversial subjects," said Minto, who has had shows in Albany, N.Y., Denver and Phoenix. Last week, Minto ...
