Sacramento bishop sues nuns over school closure The Associated Press Published: Friday, Jun. 12, 2009 - 10:52 am SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- The Catholic bishop of Sacramento and a group of financial donors are suing the nuns who shut down an all-girls high school this spring. They're upset that the nuns' order plans to use proceeds from the sale of the school to help fund the nuns' retirement, rather than keep the money in Sacramento for Catholic education. The lawsuit was filed Thursday in Sacramento County Superior Court by Bishop Jaime Soto and seven other financial contributors. The nuns who ran Loretto High School announced in January that declining enrollment had forced ...

Follow Christ, Reject "Christianity"

The evangelical church’s stated reason for supporting the US serial attacks on Islamic nations is "Muslim militancy.” The Christian Right’s leaders have managed to read far enough into a Qur’an to find passages about conflict with other tribes in the 7th Century when the book was scribed. One evangelical pastor put is this way in a recent conversation with your author: “I respect Islamic scholars and I respect many of them for their life style, but there is no way of getting away from the Militancy of Islam. It is built upon conversion by conquest.” The more aggressive Celebrity Christians now use the term "islamo-fascist" a new favorite fad ...

Aren’t there some striking parallels between the Jesus and Horus stories?

Aren’t there some striking parallels between the Jesus and Horus stories? Hardly. For those unfamiliar with the Horus story, Horus is a character in Egyptian mythology, the son of the gods Isis and Osiris. There actually appear to be multiple dieties named 'Horus', but the one who is the son of Isis and Osiris is the one the critics claim influenced the Jesus story. For a quick and unbiased debunking of this story, go to any search engine and find a site on Egyptian mythology and read the Horus story for yourself (I've provided some links at the bottom of the page), or check the mythology section at your local library (go ahead, I dare you!). Acharya S's book "The ...

LIFE - the animate existence, or term of animate existence, of an individual The principle of life or living; the animate existence, or term of animate existence, of an individual. As to earthly, physical life, things possessing life generally have the capabilities of growth, metabolism, response to external stimuli, and reproduction. The Hebrew word used in the Scriptures is chai•yim´, and the Greek word is zo•e´. The Hebrew word ne´phesh and the Greek word psy•khe´, both meaning “soul,” are also employed to refer to life, not in the abstract sense, but to life as a person or an animal. (Compare the words “soul” and ...

How Did the Trinity Doctrine Develop?

How Did the Trinity Doctrine Develop? There are many people who ask: ‘If the Trinity is not a Biblical teaching, how did it become a doctrine of Christendom?’ Many think that it was formulated at the Council of Nicaea in 325 C.E. That is not totally correct, however. The Council of Nicaea did assert that Christ was of the same substance as God, which laid the groundwork for later Trinitarian theology. But it did not establish the Trinity, for at that council there was no mention of the holy spirit as the third person of a triune Godhead. Constantine’s Role at Nicaea FOR many years, there had been much opposition on Biblical grounds to the developing idea that Jesus was ...

The Overall Harmony of the Bible

The Overall Harmony of the Bible Imagine a library of 66 books written by about 40 different people over a period of 1,600 years. Three languages were used by writers who lived in a number of lands. All the writers had different personalities, abilities, and backgrounds. But when the books they wrote were eventually gathered together, it turned out that, really, they made up just one great book following one basic theme from beginning to end. That is hard to imagine, is it not? Yet, the Bible is just such a library. NO HONEST student can fail to be impressed by the fact that the Bible, although a collection of different books, is one unified production. It is unified in that, from ...

Do We Really Need the Originals of the Bible?

Do We Really Need the Originals of the Bible? SOME 3,500 years ago, an elderly man in the Middle East compiled a history of the world up to his time. That work, which came to make up five lengthy books, must have been a huge effort. The man was more than 80 years old when he began his account. Neither he nor his nation had a settled home but wandered from place to place in the Sinai Desert. Eventually, however, what that elderly man wrote became a part of the most important literary production the world has ever known. That man was Moses, who was privileged by God to lead the ancient nation of Israel out of bondage in the land of Egypt. The five books he wrote are known today as the ...

This is the official position of the Jehovah's Witnesses on what are called the 'Jews.' Jews Definition: As commonly used today, the term refers to people of Hebrew descent and others who have been converted to Judaism. The Bible also draws attention to the fact that there are Christians who are Jews spiritually and who make up “the Israel of God.” Are the natural Jews today God’s chosen people? That is the belief of many Jews. Says the Encyclopaedia Judaica (Jerusalem, 1971, Vol. 5, col. 498): “CHOSEN PEOPLE, a common designation for the people of Israel, expressing the idea that the people of Israel stands in a special and unique relationship to the ...

The Aryan Christ: the Secret Life of Carl Jung (introductory chapter)

Richard Noll 1997 The Aryan Christ, Random House, NY. ISBN 0-679-44945-0 Introduction xii The book you hold before you is not a biography of Carl Gustav Jung. I sincerely doubt an authentic, comprehensive biography of Jung's entire life will be written any time soon. To do so would require that the heirs of Jung's estate open up everything to a scholar - Jung's private diaries, all the letters he wrote and received, his famous "Red Book" of paintings of his visions and discussions with the Dead, and of course all the personal papers and letters of his wife and collaborator, Emma Jung, who many forget had an interesting and full life independent of her husband's. ...

Obama's Speech

What are we to make of Obama’s speech at Cairo University in Egypt? "I’ve come here to Cairo to seek a new beginning between the United States and Muslims around the world, one based on mutual interest and mutual respect." Cairo is the capital of Egypt, an American puppet state whose ruler suppresses the aspirations of Egyptian Muslims and cooperates with Israel in the blockade of Gaza. In contrast to the Islamic University of Al-Azhar, Cairo University was founded as a civil university. Obama’s Cairo university audience was secular. Nevertheless, Obama said startling words that many Muslims found hopeful. He said that colonialism and the Cold War had denied ...

Rabbis who believed in Jesus HOME PAGE "No Jew who understands even one line of Gemara would ever believe in Jesus." Amos Wittenberg Is it true that only ignorant, unlearned and vulnerable Jews believe in Jesus? These pages feature the stories of devout rabbis who were steeped in Judaism from their earliest days and were hostile to the message of Jesus. When each of them examined the evidence for Jesus they found it compelling and, in spite of rejection and personal hardship, they followed the truth. Pick a Rabbi... Who Are Genuine Christians?

Who Are Genuine Christians? “CHRISTIANITY exists only where the memory of Jesus Christ is activated in theory and practice.” (On Being a Christian) With those words, Swiss theologian Hans Küng states a self-evident truth: Genuine Christianity exists only where sincere individuals put Jesus’ teachings into practice. What, then, if individuals or institutions claim to be followers of Christ but do not, in fact, practice what Jesus taught? Jesus himself said that many would claim to be Christians. They would point to various activities to prove that they had served him, saying: “Did we not prophesy in your name, and expel demons in your name, and perform many ...

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) - A Kentucky pastor is inviting his flock to bring guns to church to celebrate the Fourth of July and the Second Amendment. New Bethel Church is welcoming "responsible handgun owners" to wear their firearms inside the church June 27, a Saturday. An ad says there will be a handgun raffle, patriotic music and information on gun safety. "We're just going to celebrate the upcoming theme of the birth of our nation," said pastor Ken Pagano. "And we're not ashamed to say that there was a strong belief in God and firearms—without that this country wouldn't be here." The guns must be unloaded and private security will check ...

CHRONOLOGY OF THE BIBLE

CHRONOLOGY OF THE BIBLE The English word “chronology” comes from the Greek khro•no•lo•gi´a (from khro´nos, time, and le´go, say or tell), that is, “the computation of time.” Chronology makes possible the placing of events in their orderly sequence or association and the assigning of proper dates to particular events. Jehovah is “the Ancient of Days” and the God of Eternity. (Da 7:9; Ps 90:2; 93:2) That he is an accurate Timekeeper is evident not only from the superb precision manifest in the movements of the stellar bodies but also from the divine record of his acts. In fulfillment of his promises or prophecies, he caused ...

The Struggle for a More Accurate Bible Text

The Struggle for a More Accurate Bible Text WHEN you pick up a Bible today, can you be confident that the words you are reading are the very words that were written by the apostles Matthew, John, Paul and the other Bible writers of nearly 2,000 years ago? The eminent 19th-century Bible scholar Dr. F. J. A. Hort thought so. Concerning the Christian Greek Scriptures, he wrote: “The amount of what can in any sense be called substantial variation is but a small fraction . . . and can hardly form more than a thousandth part of the entire text.” Additional manuscript discoveries and continual research since then have confirmed the fact that we have a generally accurate Bible text. ...

MANUSCRIPTS OF THE BIBLE – Trustworthy?

MANUSCRIPTS OF THE BIBLE – Trustworthy? The Holy Scriptures have a superhuman origin as to content but a human history as to their writing and preservation. Moses began compiling them under divine inspiration in 1513 B.C.E., and the apostle John wrote the final portion thereof more than 1,600 years later. The Bible was not originally one book, but as time passed, a demand arose for copies of its various books. This was so, for instance, after the Babylonian exile, for not all released Jews returned to the land of Judah. Instead, many settled elsewhere, and synagogues sprang up throughout the vast territory of the resultant Jewish Dispersion. Scribes prepared copies of the Scriptures ...

CAIRO – In remarks being translated live for broadcasts and Webcasts in every major language, President Barack Obama said Thursday that the United States wants “common ground” and “a new beginning” with the Muslim world, where America’s image plummeted with the Bush administration’s response to the 9/11 attacks. "Much has been made of the fact that an African-American with the name Barack Hussein Obama could be elected President. But my personal story is not so unique," he said in the Grand Hall of Cairo University. "The dream of opportunity for all people has not come true for everyone in America, but its promise exists for all who come ...

War is Sin

The crisis faced by combat veterans returning from war is not simply a profound struggle with trauma and alienation. It is often, for those who can slice through the suffering to self-awareness, an existential crisis. War exposes the lies we tell ourselves about ourselves. It rips open the hypocrisy of our religions and secular institutions. Those who return from war have learned something which is often incomprehensible to those who have stayed home. We are not a virtuous nation. God and fate have not blessed us above others. Victory is not assured. War is neither glorious nor noble. And we carry within us the capacity for evil we ascribe to those we fight. Those who return to speak this ...

What in the world is all this flap and hullabaloo about homosexual marriage licenses? Who cares? This is another of those inconsequential red-herring issues designed to distract you while the politicians steal the country right out from under you. You had better worry about why one euro costs $1.19 rather than whether two homosexuals can get a piece of paper at the county courthouse. Logically, to forbid something, one must demonstrate that the forbidden act will cause harm to others. OK. What harm will befall you and me and our children if two homosexuals get a marriage license? Well, I'm waiting. I'm sorry I have nothing to contribute. I can't think of any harm it will cause ...

Joscelyn Godwin, The Golden Thread (Quest Books, 2007)200 pp.The Golden Thread is a lightning tour of the Western esoteric tradition, by one of the world's foremost scholars of esotericism. Crammed with invaluable footnotes, this slim book packs a punch far beyond its meagre size – it's simply chock full of interesting insights.Basically, The Golden Thread is about wisdom; a wisdom that has survived only as a thin (and infinitely precious) thread – hence the title. This golden thread in fact gave birth to modern science, but 'science' in its contemporary sense has come to mean only knowledge 'about' something...whereas true wisdom comes from experiencing ...

The Wild Hunt 'Pagan Resurrection' by Richard RudgleyCentury: London, 2006318 pp.Reviewed by Andreas FaustThis book purports to be the biography of a god: Odin. Its mission statement is further explained on the dust jacket: "Pagan Resurrection is not just about the modern crisis in western spirituality, it also suggests a way forward."
