The Irminsul and the Externsteine: From Yggdrasil to the Irminsul

The Irminsul and the Externsteine: From Yggdrasil to the Irminsul From a talk by Arnbald OR[F]The Externsteine - Near Horn, Deutschland Over the years, beside the Thor's Hammer or the Valknut, the Irminsul has become one of the most important symbols among the northern tradition groups and followers. And, in some places - particularly in continental Europa, it has largely replaced the Thor Hammer itself. This evolution may be more than an aesthetic choice: in a way, we can say that the symbol of life and stability, the Irminsul, is beginning to replace the symbol of fight, the war hammer. Does that mean that the northern Tradition has arrived to a kind of maturity and that we do not ...

Swastika in Indian Culture

The name Swastika brings to mind very bitter memories of World War II. It was symbol of Hitler's Nazi Germany. At the time it represented Aryan superiority over all other races in the world according to the Nazis. But in the Indian context, the swastika stands for universal welfare. "Swasti" means well-being of one and all, "ka" means symbol. Vedic literature is full of such prayers. The origin of swastika symbol is rooted in hoary past. It appeared as a holy symbol in Mesopotamia, Babylonia, and ancient Greece in similar designs. Variations are also noticed in South and Central American (native American) relics. All these point out to some ancient, common religious ...

A Change of Mentality Among the Hindus: Preparation for Resistance

Chapter 7 A Change of Mentality Among the Hindus Preparation for Resistance It becomes more and more clear that what the Hindus need, specially in the regions where they are a numerical minority, is to recover, along with their national consciousness, their military virtues of old; to rebecome a military race. It is useless to try to analyse how and why the Hindus have become the strengthless flock which they presently are. And it is not only useless, but harmful to put stress upon their present weakness without pointing out what should be done to regain vitality and power. Mere stress upon a nation’s weakness only makes it weaker and weaker, through the consciousness of its ...

What ‘Church’ Does Notre Dame Belong To?

Of all the commentary I’ve read on Notre Dame’s decision to invite President Obama to receive an honorary doctorate of laws as the university’s 2009 commencement speaker, the most disturbing came from Father Kenneth Himes of the Boston College theology department. In a Boston Globe story about Professor Mary Ann Glendon’s courageous (and correct) decision to decline Notre Dame’s Laetare Medal because the university had defied the U.S. bishops’ policy barring honors for pro-abortion politicians at Catholic events, Father Himes said this: There are some well-meaning people who think Notre Dame has given away its Catholic identity, because they have been caught ...

Obama, Catholics and the Notre Dame Commencement

Most Catholics who have heard about the issue support the University of Notre Dame's decision to invite President Barack Obama to speak and receive an honorary degree at its May 17 commencement, even though he supports abortion rights and embryonic stem cell research. But a new poll conducted by the Pew Research Center's Forum on Religion & Public Life also finds a deep division on this issue between the most-observant Catholics and those who are less observant, as defined by frequency of worship service attendance. These findings are consistent with Catholic's overall views of Obama: a majority voted for him in the 2008 presidential election and express approval of his ...

Poster Comment:Good morning everyone. Turn this one up! Sunna is the Norse Goddess of the Sun, also known as Sól, though some hold that Sól is the mother and Sunna Her daughter. In Norse mythology, the Sun is female while the Moon is male. When the world was created from the body of the dead giant Ymir by the triad of Odin, Vili, and Ve, the Sun, Moon and Stars were made from the gathered sparks that shot forth from Muspellsheim, the Land of Fire. Sól ("Mistress Sun"), drives the chariot of the Sun across the sky every day. Pulled by the horses Allsvinn ("Very Fast") and Arvak ("Early Rising"), the Sun-chariot is pursued by the wolf ...

“Jesus, take pity on me! I’m going to die of exhaustion.” --Chinese worker after 19-hour shift Crucifixes Made Under Horrific Sweatshop Conditions in China Linked to Saint Patrick’s Cathedral, Trinity Church and The $4.63 billion Association for Christian Retail * At the Junxingye factory in China, the mostly-young women—including several 15 and 16-year- olds—making crucifixes are forced to work 14 to 15 ½ hours a day, from 8:00 a.m. to 10:00 or 11:30 p.m., seven days a week. There are also frequent 18 and 19-hour shifts ending at 2:00 or 3:00 a.m. Before shipments of crucifixes must leave for the U.S., there are even mandatory, all-night 22 ½ ...

Christians for Torture [Full Thread]

The most ardent atheist would be rendered speechless should he hear of Christians for abortion, profanity, adultery, or drunkenness. Of all people in the world, it is certainly Christians – and especially the conservative, evangelical, and fundamentalist kind – that atheists, agnostics, and infidels expect to be opposed to these things. So what in the world is an atheist to think when he sees the widespread Christian support for torture? Yes, torture. But don’t Christians claim to follow the ethics of Jesus and the apostles in the New Testament? Aren’t Christians commanded to put off anger, wrath, and malice (Colossians 3:8), "be ready to every good work" ...

National Socialism and Neo-Paganism

An entirely new culture can hardly be conceived among people who retain the same religion as before. The Programme proclaimed at Hofbräuhaus states, it is true, that "the Party as such stands for a positive Christianity." [1] But, as I have said before -- and as all the most intelligent National Socialists I met have admitted to me -- it was well-nigh impossible, in 1920, to say anything else, if one hoped at all to gather a following. And it also remains true that the very fact of replacing, as we did, the link of common faith by the link of common blood -- the creedal conception of community by the racial one -- is contrary to the spirit of Christianity, no less than to its practice, ...

Early Religions Of The Irish: Sun-Worship

WHATEVER the earlier savage races may have thought of religion, if they thought at all about it, those who came after, with more or less touch of civilization, were led, in Ireland, as elsewhere, to contemplate Deity in the Sun. Sun-worship may have superseded other and grosser forms of Nature worship. Stuart-Glennie has well expressed our thoughts thus--"We should be quite unable truly to understand how the central myths and poesies originated, if we cannot, in some degree at least, realize the wonder with which men saw the daily and yearly renewed sublime spectacle of the birth, the life course, and the death of the life-and-light-giving Creator actually visible in the Heavens.--A ...

She has shone brightly like a young woman,Stirring all creatures to life. Now it is time to kindle the sacred Fire:Dawn has made light and chased away the darkness. Turned toward this far-spreading worldWith white robes about her,She has risen and shone in brightness. She has beamed forth lovely with golden colors,Mother of the kine, guide of the days she brings. Our Lady of Light brings the Eye of the Gods,As she leads her white, beautiful steed.Dawn shines apparent, bestowing on all menHer store of marvelous treasure. Come with your bounty; drive away foes.Grant us secure and lush pastures.Disperse those who hate us.Pour bounty, opulent lady, on the singer. Beam forth your light to guide ...

Church is the victim of a hate crime in San Luis Obispo

For the second time in less than a week, a San Luis Obispo church is the victim of a hate crime. A sign at the United Church of Christ on Los Osos Valley Road proclaiming the church accepts all people was first vandalized on Sunday when someone removed the lighting for the sign. Then, Thursday night someone torched the sign, causing the front and back of the sign to melt. Both incidents are being classified as hates crimes by the police. The pastor says the congregation raised $5,000 for the sign. They plan to repair it. Here is a description of the suspect: * White male with red hair. * Police say has a transient appearance.

Tolkien out-Wagners Wagner: posthumous publication fills gap in the Nibelung legend

Editor's note: Elizabeth Hand's review (linked below) may be more readable. She quotes C.S. Lewis, friend of Tolkien, whom she implies had read the piece, and: ...was likewise enthralled of what he termed "pure 'Northernness' . . . a vision of huge, clear spaces hanging above the Atlantic in the endless twilight of Northern summer, remoteness, severity." This "pure Northernness" is the heart of "The Legend of Sigurd and Gudrun," two previously unpublished poems that now appear for the first time in a book scrupulously edited by Tolkien's son Christopher. From The Times Literary Supplement May 6, 2009 Tolkien out-Wagners WagnerThe most unexpected of Tolkien’s posthumous publications ...

The Hypocrisy of Christian Militarists

Although I have written previously about the hypocrisy of both American Christian soldiers and Christian warmongers, there is another group of Christians that are hypocrites as well: Christian militarists. As I have pointed out again and again, there is an unholy alliance between conservative, evangelical, and fundamentalist Christians and the military. Although some of these Christian militarists may oppose the Iraq War, the stationing of U.S. troops around the globe, and U.S. foreign policy in general, they wholeheartedly support the U.S. military as the defender of our freedoms. They see no problem with Christians joining the military and then going off to fight some foreign war that ...

Waterboard an A-rab for Jesus

In a recent column, Eric Margolis labeled the Republicans as "America’s champion of war and torture." Those are some harsh words – harsh but true. The recent release of the Bush torture memos and the revelation that the CIA waterboarded Abu Zubaydah 83 times and Khalid Sheik Mohammed 183 times before Bush claimed that we don’t torture has elicited a predictable response from conservative Christians who think the Republican Party is the party of God: silence. It is also no surprise that a new survey by the Pew Research Center for the People & the Press shows that of four major religious traditions in the United States (white evangelical Protestant, white ...

I have worked with Slavic/Russian peoples now since 1979, studying at the INSTITUTE OF SLAVIC STUDIES (then operated by Peter Deyneka, founder of The Slavic Gospel Association,in the Chicago area,) and have been periodically networking with Russian/Slavic peoples now for 30 years. ...

Credit card company calls Turtle "a fucking slut" [Full Thread]

I have two credit cards. One, which shall remain nameless, decided several months ago to cut my limit by three thousand dollars, to within $200 of my limit. They also raised the interest rate to 25% and also raised by monthly payment. I let that one go. My ex-girlfriend, who makes $120,000 a year, got the same treatment from the same company. She complained, and they told her, "too bad." Then, recently, of course, banks got the bailout. One of them was the bank issuing my credit card, which also used the bailout money to give the executives boneses. I stopped paying my bill and told them it had already been paid through my tax money, and through everyone else's, and also by ...

Exhuming Bob X: Lubavitcher Bob (Dylan)

In 1979 Bob publicly embraced Jesus as his personal savior. This was widely seen as a conversion to Christianity because Bob went to the Vineyard Fellowship of Tarzana for indoctrination into the Christian mysteries. He could hardly have learned Christianity from Jewish circles although the Jewish group of Jews For Jesus was already active. Pharasaic Jews have always despised Jews For Jesus so that may not have been a viable option for Bob. While non-Jews may be scandalized by the concept of Jews embracing Jesus there is no reason for them to be astounded. After all Jesus was a Jew, preaching to Jews in the Jewish tradition. The early Christian movement was entirely Jewish. They were Jews ...

My Christian Brothers, Leave Government and Cleave Unto Liberty

My Christian Brothers: I do not understand why you are now so concerned about government. Nothing has changed. The US is still a democracy, ruled by the will of the majority, under a nominal constitution. And the US continues to have an imperial president, overseas wars and conflicts, and a strong internal state. Plus, this country has shown, time and again, the ability to transition peacefully from one ruling elite to another. Remember, you proudly cheered as our soldiers were sent to foreign lands in order to fight and kill for the very same political system you now question. Sure, your ideas are no longer in the majority, but democracies always have minority views. And, since you are ...

Darwin and the Right

WASHINGTON—Polls, particularly in the United States, tell us that many conservatives still distrust Charles Darwin’s theory of evolution. The bicentennial of his birth should be a fitting occasion for the right to take another look at a man who contributed immensely to some ideas that it holds dear.Darwin was not an atheist but a Victorian believer. He was not a proto-Marxist but a liberal, which in 19th-century Britain meant someone who favored individual liberty over big government. Darwin was an admirer of John Locke and Adam Smith, two of the greatest thinkers of freedom. And although he was influenced by Malthus, whose writings on overpopulation were later used by critics of ...

Taliban shave men for listening to music: victim

PESHAWAR, Pakistan (AFP) – Taliban militants in northwest Buner district shaved the heads and moustaches of four Pakistani men as punishment for listening to music, one of the men said Sunday. Buner has been subject to huge US concern after hundreds of Taliban fighters advanced into the area from the neighbouring Swat, where the hardliners fought a brutal, nearly two-year insurgency to enforce Islamic law. Although Taliban and local officials said the fighters retreated from Buner by Saturday, local members of the movement remain. Residents said many fighters were still present in the hilly outskirts of the district. In one incident late Saturday, Taliban hardliners shaved the heads ...
