100,000 secular Britons seek 'de-baptism'

More than 100,000 Britons have recently downloaded "certificates of de-baptism" from the Internet to renounce their Christian faith. The initiative launched by a group called the National Secular Society (NSS) follows atheist campaigns here and elsewhere, including a London bus poster which triggered protests by proclaiming "There's probably no God." "We now produce a certificate on parchment and we have sold 1,500 units at three pounds (4.35 dollars, 3.20 euros) a pop," said NSS president Terry Sanderson, 58. John Hunt, a 58-year-old from London and one of the first to try to be "de-baptised," held that he was too young to make any decision ...

How a Few Zionists Hijacked Evangelical Christianity by Bob & Suzanne Hamrickwww.leftbehindlie.com What is “Zionism”? Zionism is a political movement which claims that “the Jewish people” are today entitled to occupy, possess and govern the territory which was originally promised to the descendants of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob by YHVH Elohim, the God of the Hebrew Tanakh (the Christian “Old Testament”). Unfortunately for the Zionists, their theory of entitlement is directly and explicitly contradicted by YHVH Elohim Himself in the pages of the same Hebrew Scriptures which He dictated, word for word! These same Hebrew Scriptures also record the ...

Jehovah’s Witnesses -- Who Are They?

Jehovah’s Witnesses Definition: The worldwide Christian society of people who actively bear witness regarding Jehovah God and his purposes affecting mankind. They base their beliefs solely on the Bible. What beliefs of Jehovah’s Witnesses set them apart as different from other religions? (1) Bible: Jehovah’s Witnesses believe that the entire Bible is the inspired Word of God, and instead of adhering to a creed based on human tradition, they hold to the Bible as the standard for all their beliefs. (2) God: They worship Jehovah as the only true God and freely speak to others about him and his loving purposes toward mankind. Anyone who publicly witnesses about ...

What Do They Believe?

What Do They Believe? JEHOVAH’S WITNESSES believe in Almighty God, Jehovah, Creator of the heavens and the earth. The very existence of the intricately designed wonders in the universe surrounding us reasonably argues that a supremely intelligent and powerful Creator produced it all. Just as the works of men and women reflect their qualities, so do those of Jehovah God. The Bible tells us that “his invisible qualities are clearly seen from the world’s creation onward, because they are perceived by the things made.” Also, without voice or words, “the heavens are declaring the glory of God.”—Romans 1:20; Psalm 19:1-4. People do not mold clay pots or make ...

Saint Patrick

It is sometimes supposed that St. Patrick's apostolate in Ireland was an unbroken series of peaceful triumphs, and yet it was quite the reverse. No storm of persecution was, indeed stirred up to assail the infant Church, but the saint himself was subjected to frequent trials at the hands of the druids and of other enemies of the Faith. He tells us in his "Confessio" that no fewer than twelve times he and his companions were seized and carried off as captives, and on one occasion in particular he was loaded with chains, and his death was decreed. But from all these trials and sufferings he was liberated by a benign Providence. It is on account of the many hardships which he ...

Boom-years borrowing hits churches

By RACHEL ZOLL, AP Religion Writer – Sat Mar 14, 12:48 pm ET Metropolitan Baptist Church was bursting out of its home. From a group of freed slaves in Civil War-era Washington, Metropolitan Baptist had grown into a modern-day megachurch and community service powerhouse. In 2006, construction began on the congregation's dream complex in Largo, Md. — a $30 million campus with a 3,000-seat church, an education center and an 1,100-car parking lot. Last year, the congregation sold its church in Washington. Preparations began for the move to what leaders had taken to calling "God's land in Largo." But on Oct. 20, their plans were abruptly put on hold. The Rev. H. ...

Jesus' Teaching on Hell [Full Thread]

Most of what we believe about hell comes from Catholicism and ignorance of the Old Testament, not from the Bible. This study will cause you to re-examine current teaching on hell and urge you to further study on what happens to the wicked after death. "Don't you know that hell is just something the Catholic Church invented to scare people into obedience?" I was righteously indignant when, a number of years ago, a caller uttered these words on a call-in radio show I was conducting. Perturbed by his haphazard use of Scripture, I pointed out to him and the audience, that hell couldn't possibly be something invented by Catholic theologians because Jesus talked about it. I ...

A Kinder, Gentler Hell?

As opinions about hell have changed over the years, so have the teachings of many churches. But what does the Bible say? Syncretism-the combination of differing beliefs and practices-has long been a hallmark of mainstream Christianity. Centuries ago church leaders set aside biblically assigned days of worship in favor of Sunday, Christmas and Easter. Similarly, popular tradition long ago replaced the biblical teaching about hell. Beliefs about hell are changing again. A recent poll revealed a dramatic shift in opinion among Americans regarding concepts of hell. True to historical form, major religious organizations are adjusting their teachings accordingly. The latest beliefs and ...

'Gay' culture in Catholic Church grows

Posted: March 24, 2002 By Toby Westerman © 2009 WorldNetDaily.com A "gay" culture is growing among clergy of the American Catholic Church that receives support from members of the hierarchy as well as from those directly involved in the training of priests, according to a Catholic priest-theologian. As the scandal of clerical abuse within the Catholic Church in the U.S. continues to grow – whose cost is estimated to approach $1 billion – the role of the hierarchy is coming under scrutiny. With nearly one in four Americans counting themselves as Catholic, the burgeoning crisis of sexual abuse by the Church's clergy directly impacts American society and ...

By RACHEL ZOLL, AP Religion Writer – 39 mins ago NEW YORK – Roman Catholic dioceses and religious orders saw a rise in molestation claims against clergy last year, according to a new report from U.S. bishops. Nearly all the 803 cases involved adults who said they had been abused as children decades ago. Church leaders paid less in settlements, attorney fees and other abuse-related costs. Still, the amount reached just over $436 million, bringing the total payouts for abuse to more than $2.6 billion since 1950, according to studies commissioned by the prelates. The statistics are part of an annual review of child safety in American dioceses and religious orders that is mandated ...

How Science Fiction Found Religion

There is a young man, different from other young men. Ancient prophecies foretell his coming, and he performs miraculous feats. Eventually, confronted by his enemies, he must sacrifice his own life—an act that saves mankind from calamity—but in a mystery as great as that of his origin, he is reborn, to preside in glory over a world redeemed. Tell this story to one of the world’s 2 billion Christians, and he’ll recognize it instantly. Tell it to a science-fiction and fantasy fan, and he’ll ask why you’re making minor alterations to the plot of The Matrix or Superman Returns. For reasons that have as much to do with global politics as with our cultural moment, ...

By RACHEL ZOLL, AP Religion Writer – Mon Mar 9, 12:14 am ET A wide-ranging study on American religious life found that the Roman Catholic population has been shifting out o of the Northeast to the Southwest, the percentage of Christians in the nation has declined and more people say they have no religion at all. Fifteen percent of respondents said they had no religion, an increase from 14.2 percent in 2001 and 8.2 percent in 1990, according to the American Religious Identification Survey. Northern New England surpassed the Pacific Northwest as the least religious region, with Vermont reporting the highest share of those claiming no religion, at 34 percent. Still, the study found ...

“Tell Us, When Will These Things Be?”

“Tell Us, When Will These Things Be?” “New things I am telling out. Before they begin to spring up, I cause you people to hear them.”—ISAIAH 42:9. DIVINE teaching springs from Jehovah God, “the One telling from the beginning the finale.” (Isaiah 46:10) As the preceding article showed, the apostles sought such teaching from Jesus, asking him: “Tell us, When will these things be, and what will be the sign when all these things are destined to come to a conclusion?”—Mark 13:4. 2 In answer, Jesus described a composite “sign” consisting of evidence that would prove that the Jewish system was soon to end. This was fulfilled with ...

What Future for the Sheep and the Goats?

What Future for the Sheep and the Goats? “He will separate people one from another, just as a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats.”—MATTHEW 25:32. JESUS CHRIST certainly was the greatest Teacher on earth. (John 7:46) One of his teaching methods was the use of parables, or illustrations. (Matthew 13:34, 35) These were simple yet powerful in conveying deep spiritual and prophetic truths. 2 In the parable of the sheep and the goats, Jesus pointed to a time for him to act in a special capacity: “When the Son of man arrives in his glory, and . . .” (Matthew 25:31) This should interest us because it is the illustration with which Jesus concludes ...

“Stand Firm and See the Salvation of Jehovah” “Jehovah is on my side; I shall not fear. What can earthling man do to me?”—PSALM 118:6. TODAY, mankind faces events of a magnitude never previously experienced. Foretelling this about our day, Jesus warned his followers: “There will be great tribulation such as has not occurred since the world’s beginning until now, no, nor will occur again. In fact, unless those days were cut short, no flesh would be saved; but on account of the chosen ones those days will be cut short.”—Matthew 24:21, 22. 2 Unseen to human eyes, heavenly forces are now holding back that great tribulation. The apostle John ...

Bishop's apology on Holocaust not enough

VATICAN CITY (AP) — An apology from a bishop who denied the Holocaust wasn't good enough, the Vatican said, adding that he must repudiate his views if he wants to be a Roman Catholic clergyman. The statement by Bishop Richard Williamson "doesn't appear to respect the conditions" the Vatican set out for him, the Rev. Federico Lombardi, a spokesman for the pope, said Friday. Rabbi Marvin Hier, founder of the Simon Wiesenthal Center, praised the Vatican in a statement for "standing firm and not permitting a person who believes that the Nazi Holocaust is a lie to have any role in the church." In an interview broadcast last month on Swedish state TV and in ...

I recently had a minor surgical procedure – outpatient – no big deal. During my follow-up appointment my doctor said he needed to have me get a simple follow-up test to confirm that everything looked okay. When I called to make an appointment at the radiology center my doctor prefers, I was told that my insurance wouldn't cover most of the cost at their center. Since it was my doctor's center of choice, I asked what the out-of-pocket cost would be. The woman on the phone asked me to hold a moment, and when she came back she informed me they couldn't accept direct payment. Excuse me? I was sure I misunderstood. You're saying I can't pay you cash money to ...

YOU MAY NOT meet them among your circle of friends, but there are millions of Americans who fiercely believe we should nuke North Korea and Iran, seize the Middle East's oil, and replace the U.S. Constitution with the Christian Bible. They believe the United States will conquer the entire world and convert it to our notions of democracy and fundamentalist Christian religion. And that will happen says my Christian neo-conservative friend Dave Henderson says, when win we elect a man with the balls to use our nukes." You may not believe me, and if you don't I cannot blame you for never having been exposed to such folks. Only an idiot or a masochistic observer of the American scene ...

Why “Be in Subjection”?

Why “Be in Subjection”? AMONG the many commands found repeated in God’s Word, the Bible, is, “Be in subjection.” At Romans 13:1 we read: “Let every soul be in subjection to the superior authorities,” that is, to governments. Younger men are counseled to “be in subjection to the older men.” (1 Pet. 5:5) Then, again, the apostle Paul admonishes: “Let wives be in subjection to their husbands.”—Eph. 5:22. To be in subjection goes against the grain of many imperfect humans, so much so, in fact, that all manner of social movements are formed to rebel, often violently, against being in subjection. For example, the New York Times, not so ...
