Oct. 1, 2012 (Reuters) — U.S. farmers are using more hazardous pesticides to fight weeds and insects due largely to heavy adoption of genetically modified crop technologies that are sparking a rise of "superweeds" and hard-to-kill insects, according to a newly released study. Genetically engineered crops have led to an increase in overall pesticide use, by 404 million pounds from the time they were introduced in 1996 through 2011, according to the report by Charles Benbrook, a research professor at the Center for Sustaining Agriculture and Natural Resources at Washington State University. Of that total, herbicide use increased over the 16-year period by 527 million pounds ...

Posted at LP, thought it might be appreciated here. Over there, the usual crap stains devolved the thread.. The Hobbit will be coming out. Three movies, am going to copy and paste a fantastic post about this. Am unsure of origin of this, but worth reading, here goes..... 1 - 09-24-2012, 10:24 AM Everything Peter Jackson added to The Hobbit — with PROOF! Potentially very spoilerish, but it sounds amazing Quote: Now that it has been officially confirmed that Peter Jackson will be making a trilogy out of The Hobbit, everyone is asking one basic question. How is that possible? The Hobbit just isn't as big as Lord of the Rings. But Jackson has sworn up and down that there's ...

BOSTON (Reuters) - The Harvard-educated son of disgraced Chinese political leader Bo Xilai defended his father against charges of taking bribes and having improper sexual relationships, saying he believed in his father's good character. "Personally, it is hard for me to believe the allegations that were announced against my father, because they contradict everything I have come to know about him throughout my life," Bo Guagua said in a statement posted on the microblog site Tumblr. "Although the policies my father enacted are open to debate, the father I know is upright in his beliefs and devoted to duty," he added. Bo confirmed the statement, posted on ...

Assange, an intelligence asset of Israel, as Zbigniew Brzezinski pointed out on December 2, 2010 on National Public Radio in an interview with Judy Woodruff, one tasked with supplying a platform for Israeli intelligence to insert carefully crafted “pointed intelligence” wrapped in “Wikileaks.” The aftermath of the last world altering months may mean life or death, war or peace for millions, perhaps the entire world. Real conflict in Syria, the attempts by others to expand regional conflicts, tribal feuds and ethnic rivalries into war of aggression is becoming openly recognized, perhaps for the first time in history. Since the days of Machiavelli, war through deception ...

Psychiatric Drugs: In the first half of Tuesday's show, author and psychiatrist, Dr. Peter Breggin, discussed the harmful long term effects of psychiatric drugs. The original drug safety studies only last for short periods, but people are told to go on these drugs for months and years, he said. When you stay on these kind of medications for a long time, we're finding a shortened lifespan, particularly from anti-psychotics, which may cut 20 years from a person's life, he detailed. Further, scans and MRIs have revealed that people on long-term psychiatric drugs have brain shrinkage. While the drugs may offer some short term relief for patients, "if you're looking at ...

Oklahoma Open Carry Law Embraced By Many In Tulsa

TULSA, Oklahoma - It's official: Oklahoma will be an open carry state starting in November. Governor Mary Fallin signed Senate Bill 1733 into a law Tuesday afternoon, making it legal for Oklahomans to get a handgun license and carry their guns unconcealed. But the bill has triggered a lot of mixed feelings. Oklahoma is now the 44th state to allow "open carry." Although it seems kind of cut and dry, there are some special requirements to be able to carry your gun freely. Stephen Brewer has a concealed handgun license. He says it's good that Oklahomans will now have the option to carry openly, but he'd rather stick to the traditional approach and keep his gun hidden. ...

I started out at Ted Nugent's website/forum (TNUSA) in the late 90's, it was a happening place back then. Next, I migrated over to LibertyPost.org when somebody at TNUSA recommended it and the moderation at TNUSA got pretty heavy-handed. After Goldi banned me during one of her Ron Paul purges (how Leninist is THAT?) back in 2007 I came here and quit being a Neocon-Patriotard :)

In an effort to comply with state laws about gender discrimination, a Rhode Island school district has banned father-daughter dances and mother-son baseball games after a single mom complained that her daughter wasn't able to attend a dance. The mother filed a complaint with the Rhode Island branch of the American Civil Liberties Union last May, saying that her child felt excluded from the dance because she did not have a father figure to take her. The dance was a longstanding event run by a parent-teacher organization. "I think when schools tell girls 'You love dances' and boys 'You love baseball games,' I think that is going too far," Rhode Island ACLU ...

5 Things To Always Buy Used

Other than a new smell and the satisfaction of being the only owner, buying something new doesn’t make sense for some things. Buying used items can save you a significant amount of money, which can make up for the fact that you don't get the joy of opening a virgin product. If you can live without the smell of a new car or a new book and don't mind not having the original tags to cut off new clothes, you can easily spend half as much while getting quality merchandise. Here are some things you should always buy used: 1. Furniture. For the amount of damage that furniture takes from everyday use, you'd think it would be difficult to find good used furniture. Consignment ...

The German government has barred American pastor Terry Jones from entering the country amid rising protests against an anti-Islam film made in the United States. A spokesman for the German Interior Ministry said on Sunday that pastor Jones’ visit would be contrary to the "interest in maintaining public order." It comes after a German far-right, Pro Deutschland, invited the extremist pastor to the country in order to attend a Berlin screening of the anti-Islam movie produced by an Israeli-American in the US. The radical Florida pastor rose to prominence after he burnt copies of the Holy Quran in public, sparking massive demonstrations in several countries. Meanwhile, ...

A South Carolina prison guard was released late last night following a tense five-hour standoff, after inmates using contraband cell phones tipped off authorities that the injured officer was being held hostage in a broom closet. About 120 inmates in one dormitory of the Lee Correctional Institution, a maximum security prison in Bishopville, S.C., "overtook an officer" using homemade shanks and other weapons around 5 p.m. EDT, said department of corrections spokesman Clark Newsom. The guard suffered lacerations on his face and was held hostage for five hours in a closet guarded by inmates, many of them convicted rapists and murderers. Other inmates inside the prison alerted ...

Exorcism boom in Poland sees magazine launch

WARSAW — With exorcism booming in Poland, Roman Catholic priests have joined forces with a publisher to launch what they claim is the world's first monthly magazine focused exclusively on chasing out the devil. "The rise in the number or exorcists from four to more than 120 over the course of 15 years in Poland is telling," Father Aleksander Posacki, a professor of philosophy, theology and leading demonologist and exorcist told reporters in Warsaw at the Monday launch of the Egzorcysta monthly. Ironically, he attributed the rise in demonic possessions in what remains one of Europe's most devoutly Catholic nations partly to the switch from atheist communism to free ...

Historic Visions of the Future

Historic visions of the future A set of 19th century postcards has revealed that's just what French artists thought we'd be doing at the turn of the 21st century. The set of postcards, produced between 1899 and 1910, predict what life would be like in Paris in the year 2000 - and there are some fairly bizarre scenes. The year 2000 may have been and gone - but no one has yet invented a flying fireman, or started playing croquet underwater. And while Parisians haven't as yet replaced the fireplace in their homes with sticks of glowing radium, as one portrait shows, there are some portraits which aren't too far off the mark. Poster Comment:Except for being racist.

Length of Yellow Caution Traffic Lights Could Prevent Accidents, Researchers Say

ScienceDaily (Sep. 11, 2012) — A couple of years ago, Hesham Rakha misjudged a yellow traffic light and entered an intersection just as the light turned red. A police officer handed him a ticket. "There are circumstances, as you approach a yellow light, where the decision is easy. If you are close to the intersection, you keep going. If you are far away, you stop. If you are almost at the intersection, you have to keep going because if you try to stop, you could cause a rear-end crash with the vehicle behind you and would be in the middle of the intersection anyway," said Rakha, professor of civil and environmental engineering at Virginia Tech. He's not trying to ...

Common type of rail car has dangerous design flaw

CHICAGO (AP) — For two decades, one of the most commonly used type of rail tanker has been allowed to haul hazardous liquids from coast to coast even though transportation officials were aware of a dangerous design flaw that almost guarantees the car will tear open in an accident, potentially spilling cargo that could catch fire, explode or contaminate the environment. The rail and chemical industries have committed to a safer design for new tankers but are pressing regulators not to require modifications to tens of thousands of existing cars, despite a spike in the number of accidents as more tankers are put into service to accommodate soaring demand for ethanol, the highly ...

Portland school sees racism in peanut butter and jelly sandwiches

In an effort to combat perceived discrimination, one Portland school seems to have gone off the deep end by suggesting peanut butter and jelly sandwiches carry racist connotations, Twitchy reported Monday. According to the Portland Tribune, Verenice Gutierrez, principal of Harvey Scott K-8 School, "picks up on the subtle language of racism" on a daily basis. "Take the peanut butter sandwich, a seemingly innocent example a teacher used in a lesson last school year," the Tribune said. “What about Somali or Hispanic students, who might not eat sandwiches?” Gutierrez asked. “Another way would be to say: ‘Americans eat peanut butter and jelly, do you ...

German newspaper Süddeutsche Zeitung reported Mrs Wulff had given a sworn declaration denying all allegations relating to prostitution or escort work before her marriage. A Japanese engineering company has built an earthquake-resistant bed, Wood Luck, that can protect sleep people at the time of disaster. While earthquakes in Japan are frequent and deadly, Shinko Industries has come up with a novelty in making a super-sturdy and earthquake-resistant bed that can provide better shelter than a table or desk as it can withstand 65 tons of pressure from falling rubble. According to Condo News Online, Shinko Industries has also unveiled another anti-earthquake innovation named Noah capsule which is a tsunami escape pod that looks like a big ball and float. The saving life capsule can hold up to four people. Since the devastating quake and tsunami in March, 20 ...
