Do we need cops at minor car accidents?

Are police needed at minor car accidents; a dent or a scratch? A German police chief says they are wasting their time on such matters. Is he right, or should a cop be there to ensure everything is done properly? Have your say. Minor traffic accidents 'waste police time' - Society (14 Aug 12) Hubert Wimber, president of the Münster police force says about a third of his officers’ time is taken up dealing with minor traffic accidents which really don’t need police presence to be sorted out. Adults should be able to deal with the consequences of a small prang – exchanging details and making sure all is in order. Wimber said his officers would be better deployed ...

Plant wildflowers not corn, say beekeepers

German beekeepers worried that too much corn will lead to a decline in bee populations are proposing wildflowers be used to fuel biogas plants instead. "For beekeepers, growing wild plants for biogas installations would be the ideal alternative to corn," said Petra Friedrich of the German Beekeepers Association. As Germany transitions away from nuclear energy, the production of biogas has become increasingly important. New biogas plants are cropping up around the country, and at present there are about 7,100 in Germany, many of which use corn as fuel. And that’s a problem for bees. “Corn isn’t that attractive for bees,” Friedrich told The Local. Bees, ...

Your toilet could be a ticking time bomb. A problem with flushing mechanisms that causes toilets to explode has prompted a recall of 2.3 million toilets in the U.S. and 9,400 in Canada. There have already been 304 complaints of exploding devices bursting, causing 14 "impact or laceration injuries," according to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission. Flushmate, the company that installed the faulty flusher, has established a website for customers to enter the serial number of their toilets to find out if they need to replace their toilet. They can also receive a repair kit. According to the company, "The affected Flushmate III Series 503 units can burst at or near the ...

The charitable foundation founded by Gates and his wife kicked off a "Reinvent the Toilet Fair" in Seattle and awarded prizes for promising innovations. "Toilets are extremely important for public health and, when you think of it, even human dignity," Gates said in a statement at http://thegatesnotes.com. "The flush toilets we use in the wealthy world are irrelevant, impractical and impossible for 40 percent of the global population, because they often don't have access to water, and sewers, electricity, and ...

Don’t Burn Out: Enjoy Your Favorite Products More by Consuming Them Less Frequently

ScienceDaily (Aug. 14, 2012) — Consumers enjoy products more in the long run if they don't overuse them when first purchased, according to a new study in the Journal of Consumer Research. "Consumers are naturally prone to consume products they enjoy too rapidly for their own good, growing tired of them more quickly than they would if they slowed down," write authors Jeff Galak (Carnegie Mellon University), Justin Kruger (New York University), and George Loewenstein (Carnegie Mellon University). We often face decisions about how rapidly to consume products we enjoy: how quickly to eat a favorite dessert; how often to listen to a favorite song; or how frequently to play ...

Just southwest of downtown Los Angeles, there are 10 parking lot enforcement employees to monitor the 1.3-square-mile beach city. Guess what these 10 lucky guys and gals are making each year? Close to $100K. The two highest paid parking meter maid employees – supervisors – made more than $92,000 and $93,000 respectively according to city documents retrieved by Patrick “Kit” Bobko, one of five council members and who also serves as mayor pro tem. But don't think the other eight employees were being jipped. The lowest paid meter maid employee made a more-than-comfortable salary of $67,367. Prices for the other seven ranged from that rate all the way to $84,267. ...

A nearly 400-foot deep sinkhole in Louisiana has swallowed all of the trees in its area and enacted a mandatory evacuation order for about 150 residences for fear of potential radiation and explosions. The 400-square-foot gaping hole is in Assumption Parish, La., about 50 miles south of Baton Rouge. The sinkhole sits in the middle of a heavily wooded space where it has consumed all of the soaring cypress trees that had been there. Flyover photos show some of the treetops still visible through the mud. Authorities enacted a mandatory evacuation for between 100 and150 homes in the area, but most people have chosen to stay, according to the Mayor's Office of Emergency Preparedness. ...

Beginning at the end, the source of the first part is “Whiskey and Gunpowder” — your California editor’s favorite extinct e-letter, published by his favorite under-employed editor, Gary Gibson. That’s right, folks, after publishing Whiskey and Gunpowder for several years as the outspoken voice of libertarian and anarchist sensibilities, the publishers shut the “Whiskey Bar’s” doors for good two days ago. Despite Whiskey’s groundbreaking editorial ...

There’s No Such Thing as Economic Freedom, There is only freedom.

In 1938 the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that a federal law prohibiting the interstate shipping of filled milk violated neither the commerce clause nor the due process clause of the Constitution. What is best remembered about that opinion is “Footnote Four,” which has influenced American jurisprudence ever since. Writing for the majority in United States v. Carolene Products Company, Justice Harlan F. Stone set out the doctrine that some kinds of freedom are more equal than others. Specifically, certain government acts warrant a higher judicial scrutiny than other kinds. The latter are to begin with a presumption of constitutionality. Harlan wrote: There may be narrower scope for ...

Hayek on Individualism: True and false.

F. A. Hayek’s essay “Individualism: True and False” (pdf; chapter one of Individualism and Economic Order) overflows with insights that belong in any brief on behalf of a free society. As the title suggests, Hayek wished to distinguish two markedly different philosophies associated with the label individualism: one that rejected rationalism and one that embraced it. “One might even say,” Hayek explained, “that the former is a product of an acute consciousness of the limitations of the individual mind which induces an attitude of humility toward the impersonal and anonymous social processes by which individuals help to create things greater than they know, ...
