A South Carolina prison guard was released late last night following a tense five-hour standoff, after inmates using contraband cell phones tipped off authorities that the injured officer was being held hostage in a broom closet. About 120 inmates in one dormitory of the Lee Correctional Institution, a maximum security prison in Bishopville, S.C., "overtook an officer" using homemade shanks and other weapons around 5 p.m. EDT, said department of corrections spokesman Clark Newsom. The guard suffered lacerations on his face and was held hostage for five hours in a closet guarded by inmates, many of them convicted rapists and murderers. Other inmates inside the prison alerted ...

WARSAW With exorcism booming in Poland, Roman Catholic priests have joined forces with a publisher to launch what they claim is the world's first monthly magazine focused exclusively on chasing out the devil. "The rise in the number or exorcists from four to more than 120 over the course of 15 years in Poland is telling," Father Aleksander Posacki, a professor of philosophy, theology and leading demonologist and exorcist told reporters in Warsaw at the Monday launch of the Egzorcysta monthly. Ironically, he attributed the rise in demonic possessions in what remains one of Europe's most devoutly Catholic nations partly to the switch from atheist communism to free ...
Historic Visions of the Future Post Date: 2012-09-12 11:19:39 by Prefrontal Vortex

Historic visions of the future A set of 19th century postcards has revealed that's just what French artists thought we'd be doing at the turn of the 21st century. The set of postcards, produced between 1899 and 1910, predict what life would be like in Paris in the year 2000 - and there are some fairly bizarre scenes. The year 2000 may have been and gone - but no one has yet invented a flying fireman, or started playing croquet underwater. And while Parisians haven't as yet replaced the fireplace in their homes with sticks of glowing radium, as one portrait shows, there are some portraits which aren't too far off the mark. Poster Comment:Except for being racist.
Length of Yellow Caution Traffic Lights Could Prevent Accidents, Researchers Say Post Date: 2012-09-12 05:56:03 by Tatarewicz

ScienceDaily (Sep. 11, 2012) A couple of years ago, Hesham Rakha misjudged a yellow traffic light and entered an intersection just as the light turned red. A police officer handed him a ticket. "There are circumstances, as you approach a yellow light, where the decision is easy. If you are close to the intersection, you keep going. If you are far away, you stop. If you are almost at the intersection, you have to keep going because if you try to stop, you could cause a rear-end crash with the vehicle behind you and would be in the middle of the intersection anyway," said Rakha, professor of civil and environmental engineering at Virginia Tech. He's not trying to ...
Common type of rail car has dangerous design flaw Post Date: 2012-09-12 04:43:00 by Tatarewicz

CHICAGO (AP) For two decades, one of the most commonly used type of rail tanker has been allowed to haul hazardous liquids from coast to coast even though transportation officials were aware of a dangerous design flaw that almost guarantees the car will tear open in an accident, potentially spilling cargo that could catch fire, explode or contaminate the environment. The rail and chemical industries have committed to a safer design for new tankers but are pressing regulators not to require modifications to tens of thousands of existing cars, despite a spike in the number of accidents as more tankers are put into service to accommodate soaring demand for ethanol, the highly ...
Portland school sees racism in peanut butter and jelly sandwiches Post Date: 2012-09-11 14:55:42 by X-15

In an effort to combat perceived discrimination, one Portland school seems to have gone off the deep end by suggesting peanut butter and jelly sandwiches carry racist connotations, Twitchy reported Monday. According to the Portland Tribune, Verenice Gutierrez, principal of Harvey Scott K-8 School, "picks up on the subtle language of racism" on a daily basis. "Take the peanut butter sandwich, a seemingly innocent example a teacher used in a lesson last school year," the Tribune said. What about Somali or Hispanic students, who might not eat sandwiches? Gutierrez asked. Another way would be to say: Americans eat peanut butter and jelly, do you ...

When the name Bettina Wulff is typed into Google's search engine, suggested search terms include the words "prostitute" and "red light district". Google says the auto-generated text reflects what others are already searching for online. Mrs Wulff denies she has ever worked as a prostitute. German newspaper Süddeutsche Zeitung reported Mrs Wulff had given a sworn declaration denying all allegations relating to prostitution or escort work before her marriage. Outbreaks: In the first half of Wednesday's show, Dr. Gary Ridenour talked about various disease outbreaks such as Hantavirus, as well as West Nile, and Lyme disease. Interestingly, historians believe that Alexander the Great died from exposure to Hantavirus in 323 BC, and soldiers were also struck by it during the Korean War. The rare disease is spread by the deer mouse, and there's been a recent outbreak at Yosemite National Park from people who stayed in the "signature tent cabins," he reported. The incubation time is 2-4 weeks, and people who contract the virus (which is not passed between humans) may experience flu-like symptoms, and fever. About a third of the cases ...

AURORA, Colo. (CBS4) A possible lawsuit is brewing over the shootings at the Aurora movie theater, and there may be many more. The suit could target the owner of the theater. Lawyers in New York they say Cinemark is the main entity theyre planning to go after for compensation for the victims. Theyre hoping they can reach some sort of settlement right off the bat, but theyre prepared to go to court. We have the experience and the contacts to hopefully end this litigation quickly, attorney Marc Bern said. Bern is with Napoli, Bern, Ripka, and Scholonik, a New York firm that has represented victims from Sept. 11 and the Costa Concordia ship wreck. Bern ...

In the first half of Thursday's show, survivalism expert Jim Rawles discussed how the collapse of the dollar and the stock market could cause civil unrest in major metro areas, and shared tips for preparedness. Eventually, foreign investors are going to demand a higher rate of return on treasury paper and "that will be the key trigger to unravel the whole ball of wax," he said. This will certainly happen within the next 10 years, probably within the next two years, he stated. If we have a solar storm or EMP event, it could take down our telecommunications system. Food stamps (which some 43 million Americans currently receive) are now on EBT cards, handled by a centralized ...

ScienceDaily (Sep. 4, 2012) Thermal imaging technology might one day be to identify drunks before they become a nuisance in bars, airports or other public spaces. Georgia Koukiou and Vassilis Anastassopoulos of the Electronics Laboratory, at University of Patras, Greece, are developing software that can objectively determine whether a person has consumed an excessive amount of alcohol based solely on the relative temperature of different parts of the person's face. Writing in the International Journal Electronic Security and Digital Forensics, the team explains how such a system sidesteps the subjective judgements one might make based on behaviour and so allow law enforcement ...

TOTO rolled out the eco-friendly three-wheel 250cc motorcycle with a specially customized toilet-shaped seat that runs on bio-fuel from the discharge of livestock or waste water. Japan's best-known toilet maker on Wednesday unveiled a "poop-powered" motorcycle that can travel as far as 180 miles on a tank filled with animal waste. Billed as the world's first waste-powered vehicle, the three-wheeler has a toilet in place of a regular seat and huge paper roll at the back. But as a young female model ...

> A Proposal for Romney/Ryan9/6/12Romney and Ryan, to the best of my knowledge, and with a web search, have not made public their College Transcripts. Since it's a key issue by many that Obama has denied access to virtually ALL of his early recordsI would propose that much could be gained by Both Romney and Ryan to make available, via WebSite Links, their transcripts (I'd assume they're at least Average Grades, they're both obviously intelligent). Obama Can Not release his. Someone in the GOP Camp needs to bring this up to the Candidates. It's an Issue! As another play, Post Their Birth Certificates on other Sites. Link them on campaign literature. Show ...
Compressed natgas vs electriic for cars Post Date: 2012-09-03 04:37:23 by Tatarewicz

Although I'm a long-time supporter of electric vehicles, it would be irresponsible as an investor to ignore potential threats to this market. So for the sake of clarification, I've decided to take a closer look at the benefits of natural gas-powered vehicles to see if they are, in fact, enough to close the lid on electric car development. The first benefit is fuel price. The most recent EPA report of compressed natural gas (CNG) prices indicates $2.13 per equivalent gasoline gallon. In some parts of the country, that's half the price of 87 Octane. Of course, natural gas won't be dirt cheap forever... but neither will gasoline. Quite frankly, I suspect there will be a ...
Premonitions - C2C recap Post Date: 2012-09-03 02:16:03 by Tatarewicz

In the first half, paranormal expert and author Joel Martin talked about premonitions and related stories. According to Martin, eight out of ten people have received an after death communication from a deceased loved one. Many of these are actually premonitions, he said. They can be challenging to research because one must either accept a person's claim or be present to record the premonition and verify the subsequent predicted event, Martin explained. He defined a premonition as a forewarning, usually related to tragedy, and noted how they are part of the normal human experience. Premonitions should be fairly specific and not merely a general feeling of unease (i.e., common sense), ...

Somebody didn't like the essay last week... The one about how we've turned into a nation of zombies 100 million people on some form of welfare, 46.5 million on food stamps, and disability claims growing six times faster than the population. This person (I'll call her Lauren) sent me a long diatribe. I take pride in my work and writing, so I must respond. It's also in your best interest that I do. Lauren begins: I didn't like this article. I didn't like your comment about $100k/yr not being 'very much' if you have two kids, a mortgage, and two car payments. If you don't think $100k is very much... Try supporting a household on $28k-$45k/year. ...

ScienceDaily (Aug. 30, 2012) "Information overload" may be an exaggerated way to describe today's always-on media environment. Actually, very few Americans seem to feel bogged down or overwhelmed by the volume of news and information at their fingertips and on their screens, according to a new Northwestern University study. The study was published in the journal The Information Society. "Little research has focused on information overload and media consumption, yet it's a concept used in public discussions to describe today's 24/7 media environment," said Eszter Hargittai, an associate professor of communication studies at Northwestern and lead ...
