5 Items You Should Never Buy at the Grocery Store

Make a list and stick to it. That's one of the best ways to be kind to a budget at the grocery store. You avoid impulse purchases because of hunger or tempting specialty items. But even the most prudent listmaker might not be protected from paying too much at the grocery store. That's because manufacturers know which favorite products can fetch higher prices -- and they don't shy away from marking them up tremendously. To keep from paying more than you have to next time you’re shopping, think twice about tossing any of these five most marked-up items into your cart. Bottled Water: 4,000% Average Markup Gulp! Sure, it's handy, but the manufacturing costs of ...

A U.S. Navy destroyer has rescued 10 sailors from an Iranian-flagged vessel that was on fire in the Gulf of Oman. The guided missile destroyer USS James E. Williams came upon the Iranian-flagged dhow as it was on fire Wednesday night. The 10 on board were picked up out of the water by the crew of the destroyer. A Defense official says eight of the 10 are Iranian; the other two are Pakistanis. According to a Navy press release the crew members "are being well cared for, receiving medical treatment and awaiting transport to aircraft carrier USS Enterprise." Commander Jason Salata, a spokesman for the Navy's Fifth Fleet, said they will be transported Thursday morning to the ...

Irish-American NYPD History Olympic history The 1908 Summer Olympics were held in London, England were extremely controversial. Many of the medals were won by Irish and Irish-American athletes who were not only members of the Irish American Athletic Club of Celtic Park in Sunnyside, Queens, but also members of the New York City Police Department. Ian McGowan, Archivist for CUNY's Institute for Irish-American Studies is currently creating an exhibit of the club's trophies, photographs, and other ephemera, including vintage trading cards celebrating the feats of athletes such as John Flanagan, Johnny Hayes, Pat McDonald, Martin Sheridan and Matt McGrath, collectively known as ...

Michael Hirsch, a lawyer from Philadelphia, complained to local media after he found a supermarket near his hotel was stocking wine bottles with Hitler in various poses and another bottle featuring an image of Pope John Paul II. "It is very shocking and startling to us," Mr Hirsch told The Daily Telegraph on Wednesday. "We would think of it as neo-Nazism. It makes you wonder about the sympathies of the local people." One bottle features Hitler with his arm raised in the Nazi, another is labelled 'Mein Kampf" and another was labelled "Ein volk, ein Reich, ein Fuhrer" (one people, one empire, one Fuhrer), Mr Hirsch said. Local prosecutors said they ...

How Does it all End?

Sorry this is a bit long but I think you’ll find it very interesting. First, how did it get this way? A group of people attempted to control the world because they saw themselves as very special, they had no regard for people’s wellbeing or feelings, it was all about them, power, money and self-importance. They controlled all the doors and all the exits and they corrupted the parliaments, and they controlled the TV stations and banks, and they manipulated markets, they were totally above the law, like demi-gods. They were allowed to convert useless paper into real money, and they issued shares, bonds, IOUs, and derivatives. Their wealth ranked in the trillions. Citizens were ...

The nightmare week for Demonoid has just reached a huge crescendo, with news coming out of Ukraine that following a massive DDoS attack the site has now been busted by local authorities. Those looking for a U.S. connection to the raid won’t be disappointed – a source in the country’s Interior Ministry says that the action was scheduled to coincide with Deputy Prime Minister Valery Khoroshkovsky’s trip to the United States. Last week thousands of Demonoid users feared the worst when their beloved site disappeared from the Internet. Many thought that the site had been busted, but were eventually relieved to hear that it was ‘only’ a massive DDoS attack. But ...

Targeting Chavez

Targeting Chavez by Stephen Lendman Since taking office in February 1999, Chavez has been Washington's number one Latin American enemy. He worries US officials for good reason. He's a powerful threat. He represents a good example. Venezuela's social democracy shames America's. Bolivarianism works. So does its political system. Elections are open, free and fair. US electoral politics lack legitimacy. Democracy is moribund. Candidates are pre-selected. Big money owns them. Key outcomes are predetermined. Duopoly power runs everything. On October 7, Venezuelans again head to the polls. Chavez seeks reelection. He remains overwhelmingly popular. Washington dreads the idea ...

Gordon Update

On February 23, 2012 a jury of Gordon's peers ruled in favor of Shawn and Cheri Carroll and sent a strong message to the Gordon clan denouncing their fraudulent schemes. In a unanimous verdict, the jury awarded the Carrolls complete victory, including punitive damages in the amount of $8851.19, plus attorney's fees and court costs. That is on top of their original purchase price. The Gordons must pay the Carolls $43,045.19. A link to the full judgement can be found at the above referenced URL source. After our victory against them, naturally they appealed. I thought a PDF of the verdict of the appeals court had been posted online, but apparently it hasn't yet. In short, the ...

The Man Who Shapes Your Future Intel’s futurist envisions life in 2022

TORONTO—Brian David Johnson gets paid to predict the future. He is not a con artist, and his trade requires neither crystal ball nor tarot card. He is the first, the one, and the only futurist at Intel, charged with envisioning how people will interact with technology a decade from now. This weekend Johnson was one of the keynote speakers at WorldFuture 2012, a gathering of some 500 futurists at Toronto Sheraton Centre. Like Johnson, many ply their skills predicting what tomorrow will bring. It’s a craft born part of science, part of fiction, and the visions people cast of coming days range from practical and predictable to unsettling and alien. The annual WorldFuture ...

Hi, my name is Xander and me and my friend are looking for a place we can go shoot hogs at. We will harvest some of them but not all. We can pick them up after shooting and take them somewhere on your land to dispose of them if you would like. We are both 21 and we are both responsible hunters and have all required state licenses and our hunter education course. We both live off 1431 in Round Rock,TX. We are looking for a place that is at most an hour and a half away. If there is a place for us to stay as well that would be great, but if not we could stay in our trucks or use tents. Thank you ahead of time for taking the time to read this. My number is 512-767-xxxx. Poster Comment:Number ...

Suppose that every day, ten men go out for a beer and the bill for all ten comes to $100. If they paid their bill the way we pay our taxes, it would go something like this: The first four men (the poorest) would pay nothing. The fifth would pay $1.00 The sixth would pay $3.00 The seventh would pay $7.00 The eighth would pay $12.00 The ninth would pay $18.00 The tenth man (the richest) would pay $59.00 So that’s what they decided to do. The men drank in the bar every day and seemed quite happy with the arrangement, until one day, the owner threw them a curve. “Since you are all such good customers, he said, I’m going to reduce the cost of your daily beer by $20.00. ...

Playfulness May Help Adults Attract Mates, Study Finds

ScienceDaily (Aug. 3, 2012) — Why do adults continue to play throughout their lives while most other mature mammals cease such behavior? According to researchers at Penn State, playfulness may serve an evolutionary role in human mating preferences by signaling positive qualities to potential long-term mates. "Humans and other animals exhibit a variety of signals as to their value as mates," said Garry Chick, professor and head of the Department of Recreation, Park and Tourism Management. "Just as birds display bright plumage or coloration, men may attract women by showing off expensive cars or clothing. In the same vein, playfulness in a male may signal to females ...

ScienceDaily (Aug. 2, 2012) — In many restaurants throughout the world, wait staff's income depends largely on the tips received from customers. According to a new study, male restaurant customers give higher tips to waitresses wearing red. This study was published in a recent issue of Journal of Hospitality and Tourism Research (published by SAGE, on behalf of the International Council on Hotel, Restaurant, and Institutional Education). In their study of 272 restaurant customers, researchers Nicolas Guéguen and Céline Jacob found not only that male patrons gave higher tips than female patrons in general, but that men gave between 14.6% and 26.1% more to waitresses ...
