Feeding baby on demand associated with higher IQ in school: study

LONDON, March 19 (Xinhua) -- Should your baby be fed according to a schedule or on demand? A new study suggests that demand-feeding is associated with higher IQ scores, but a casual link can not be decided so far. Researchers at the University of Essex and University of Oxford reported that they investigated data of more than 10,000 children born in the early 1990s in the Bristol area in Britain. The IQ scores of eight-year-old children who had been demand-fed as babies were between four and five points higher than the scores of schedule-fed children, says the study published in the European Journal of Public Health. This difference is also evident in the results of tests at ages five, ...

Ouija Board Messages

Ouija Board Messages: In the first half of Friday's C2C show, sisters and co-authors, Tina Fiorda & Tilde Cameron, discussed channeling their spirit guides through the Ouija board and the messages that were delivered to them. Fiorda recalled when they first began experimenting with the Ouija board as children, noting that an entity came through and cursed at them. Recognizing that "anything could come through that portal" the two developed a system of precautions. When using a Ouija board one should have only positive intentions, meditate for 30-60 minutes beforehand, say a prayer of protection, and imagine being surrounded by a white light, Cameron explained. They ...

I posted a joke on the board earlier and I would like to know from anyone who will reply if they believe it to be offensive. While I personally didn't think it was out of line I got (I think) three comments from people who sounded as if they were offended by it. The thread is The Fire Chief Said....?. Is it offensive, yes or no?

The Fire Chief Said....? For those who understand, no explanation is needed. For those who do not understand, no explanation is possible. Not fair to make judgment of this, until you see what the Fire Chief says!!!! In South Los Angeles , a 4-plex home was destroyed by a fire. A Mexican family of six, all welfare recipients and gang members, lived on the first floor, they died. An Islamic group of seven welfare cheats, all illegally in the country from Kenya , lived on the second floor, and they, too, all perished in the fire. 6 LA, Hispanic, Gang Bangers, & ex-cons, lived on the 3rd floor and they, too, died. A lone, white couple lived on the top floor. The couple survived the ...

I so loved this soup, served at Tapps Brewpub and Steakhouse in Saint John, New Brunswick, Canada*, that I asked for the recipe. Lucky for us they were feeling generous. While the soup was designed to be made with one of Tapps’ superb microbrews, you can substitute any light (as in color, not calorie) beer. Beer Potato Soup Makes 10 or more servings 2 tablespoons butter 1 teaspoon garlic 1 bunch green onions, chopped 1 stalk celery, diced 6 cups boiled diced potatoes 32 ounces beer 1 tablespoon sugar 1 tablespoon chicken bouillon 64 ounces chicken stock Roux to thicken 4 cups cream Salt and pepper to taste Sauté garlic in butter for 1 minute, add vegetables and sauté ...

How German bureaucrats destroy the environment by "protecting" it

Our newest goal is to minimize our ecological footprint. Thursdays are veggie days, and old-fashioned, hand-cranked washing machines are back in vogue. Websites offer environmental tips for all kinds of situations, from cosmetics based on the phases of the moon to vibrators made of plastic without toxic chemical softeners. There are urns made of cornstarch and coffins made of cardboard, so that we can embark on our final journey in an environmentally correct manner -- a final good deed before everything turns to compost. When something benefits the environment, the need to justify it suddenly disappears. The green label eliminates all controversy. And political parties are essentially in ...

Luck of the Irish People

Bono. Oscar Wilde. Bram Stoker. This is just a tiny example of only the famous Celts that have hailed from the proud nation of Ireland. For 9,000 years the great nation of Ireland has been building a wonderfully storied history that starts with ancestors such as the Nemedians, Fomorlans, and the Milesians. Today's Irish can be found in many places across the globe, as the Emerald Isle continues to spread its fun-loving, high-spirited, and lucky nature throughout the world. Ireland's history begins with its interaction with both the Scots and the invading Vikings. It moves forward as the native people ran in to the Normans and Flemish during the Anglo-Norman Invasion. Afterwards, the ...

Iranian aviation experts have produced a new indigenous unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV), which possesses high capabilities and versatile features to meet its objectives. Reza Danandeh Hakamabad, the aeronautics engineer in charge of the project, said on Friday that the new remote-controlled aircraft, called Shaparak (Butterfly), has a maximum operational radius of 50 kilometers (31 miles), and a maximum flight ceiling of 15,000 feet (4,572 meters). The aircraft is capable of three and half hours of non-stop flying, and can carry an 8-kilogram (17-pound) payload. He added that the unmanned aircraft is powered by a two-cylinder engine, and is equipped with three digital color cameras, ...

Inverted Totalitarianism and Managed Democracy (The United States in a nutshell)

Inverted totalitarianism is a term coined by political philosopher Sheldon Wolin to describe an "ideal type"government. Wolin uses the term to describe the government of the United States as it has evolved since World War II. Wolin contrasts the inverted totalitarianism of the United States with the totalitarian regimes such as Nazi Germany and the Stalinist Soviet Union. Totalitarianism and superpowers Since Aristotle, three archetypal political forms were broadly discussed: monarchy, aristocracy, and democracy. A particular state could be a hybrid of these forms, and each form had an associated "pathological" form: tyranny, oligarchy, and ochlocracy, respectively. ...

After 244 years reference book firm Encyclopaedia Britannica has decided to stop publishing its famous and weighty 32-volume print edition. It will now focus on digital expansion amid rising competition from websites such as Wikipedia. The firm, which used to sell its encyclopaedias door-to-door, now generates almost 85% its revenue from online sales. It recently launched a digital version of its encyclopaedias for tablet PCs. "The sales of printed encyclopaedias have been negligible for several years," said Jorge Cauz president of Encyclopaedia Britannica. "We knew this was going to come." Sweat Equity My backyard has been soggy since I bought the place six years ago. Not a swamp, but soggy — still spongy a week after it rains. Last year, it was made worse by my neighbor's construction of a patio. He tied his downspouts and sump pump into pipes that ran under the patio and empty a couple feet from my yard. To keep from having to mop my floors every day, I've had to wipe my dog's paws off every time he comes inside... not to mention that a soggy backyard doesn't add to the ambiance of horseshoes or crab feasts. Plus it's annoying. The time I spent thinking about my wet backyard was detracting from my quality of life. But how do you fix a problem ...

Tide laundry detergent is meant to be used for household cleaning purposes, but thieves are turning it into something dirty. Authorities are reporting a spike in thefts of Tide, and in some cities they are setting up task forces where the detergent is sold to track the number of bottles in stores. Police believe thieves are using the soap on the black market, which retails for $10-$20, to buy drugs. On the black market, Tide is often referred to as "liquid gold" and can go for $5-$10 per bottle. Last year, in St. Paul, Minnesota, a man is alleged to have stolen $25,000 worth of Tide over 15 months before authorities captured him. Stores such as CVS have amped up security ...

Avoid the News of the Day

Today’s topic is “the news.” Specifically, how consuming it can turn your brain into soft cheese and make you a lousy thinker and investor. I think the message here is important — and potentially life- changing. Does it sound like I am exaggerating? Hang in there and keep reading. You tell me what you think after you’ve read what I’ve got here. The impetus for this is an essay by Rolf Dobelli, a Swiss entrepreneur, titled “Avoid News.” Dobelli makes the case that news makes us distracted, wastes time, kills deeper thinking, fills us with anxiety and is toxic to our mental health. His analogy: “News is to the mind what sugar is to the ...

My son-in-law asked me what I thought about the group Anonymous and I told him that I thought they were a government front. I have read some articles that say they are and others just as adamantly say they aren't. Whether it started out as a government owned front or not it seems they have been infiltrated and some of the members turn to snitching when they get banged up. There is an article about one of them here.

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The Dictionary of American Regional English has finally reached its final word - "zydeco" - as researchers wrap up almost 50 years of work charting the rich variety of American speech. The dictionary's official publication date is March 20 but lexicographers and word fans have been celebrating ever since its fifth and final volume emerged earlier this year. "It truly is America's dictionary," Ben Zimmer, a language columnist and lexicographer, told a Washington, D.C. news conference on Thursday. He said when the final printed volume was delivered to its longtime editor, Joan Houston Hall, at a meeting of fellow dialect scholars: ...

Rock guitarist Ronnie Montrose, who formed the band that bore his name and performed with some of rock's heavy hitters, has died, his booking agent said Sunday. Montrose died Saturday at his home in Millbrae, agent Jim Douglas said. He was 64. Montrose had been in declining health for some time, battling prostate cancer and "personal demons," Douglas said. Besides forming his own band in 1973, Montrose performed with a number of rockers, including Sammy Hagar, Herbie Hancock, Van Morrison, Boz Scaggs and the Edgar Winter Group. "The guy was such a legendary figure for so many people," Douglas said. "He influenced so many bands." Douglas described ...

Two Japanese researchers recently introduced a prototype for a device they call a SpeechJammer that can literally “jam” someone’s voice — effectively stopping them from talking. Now they’ve released a video of the device in action. “We have to establish and obey rules for proper turn-taking,” write Kazutaka Kurihara and Koji Tsukada in their article on the SpeechJammer (PDF). “However, some people tend to lengthen their turns or deliberately disrupt other people when it is their turn … rather than achieve more fruitful discussions.” The researchers released the video after their paper went viral Thursday, to the authors’ apparent ...
