Radio Trickery Reported by GW An online leak has emerged, revealing a questionable practice used by the employer of the biggest names in radio. America's #1 and #2 radio broadcast hosts today and for decades have been Rush Limbaugh and Sean Hannity, whose ratings and profits have dominated once thriving local markets. After industry deregulation paved the way, their boss, Premiere Radio Networks and parent company Clear Channel Communications have used a Wal-Mart model of steamrolling or acquiring small, independent original radio businesses, syndicating everything from robotized genre music stations to a political talk show hosts selling snake oil. But according to an online ...

Manna - Chapter 4 by Marshall Brain Burt wanted to go outside and take a walk. Weather permitting, we tried to walk every evening. We left the cafeteria and departed through the main door along with a stream of other people. The building we exited was another one of the terrafoam projects. Terrafoam was a super-low-cost building material, and all of the welfare dorms were made out of it. They took a clay-like mud, aerated it into a thick foam, formed it into large panels and fired it like a brick with a mobile furnace. It was cheap and it allowed them to erect large buildings quickly. The robots had put up the building next to ours in a week. The government had finally figured out that ...

Jing Zhao Cesarone CHICAGO, March 5 (Xinhua) -- From sparkling costumes, elegant dance moves, melodic folk songs, to classic Beijing Opera, a stunning visual feast of Chinese culture dazzled many Chicagoans on Friday night at a concert sponsored by the Confucius Institute in Chicago (CIC). This speaks a lot about the locals' growing enthusiasm in learning Chinese inspired by Chinese President Hu Jintao's visit to the Wind City in January. During the concert at Walter Payton College Preparatory High School which President Hu once visited, students from 42 area public schools, along with their administrators, teachers and parents, reveled together for the first time, still riding ...

To: mel; jimrob I think each person who posts should get a star by their name for donation. Hmmm? Hall of shame. Maybe that isn’t such a bad idea, the more you contribute the bigger the stars or some kind of indicator as to your level of support, a little competition so to speak. Another way to recognize possible TROLLS, and another way of telling who’s who. I like it. Possibly generating twice the present level of contributions. Up to the owner though. 99 posted on Tuesday, January 11, 2011 9:31:49 AM by wita Poster Comment:Y'all dig deep now so you can get big stars by your name. ahaha. Two and a Half Men star Charlie Sheen lashed out at the show's co-creator Chuck Lorre during an interview on the syndicated Alex Jones Show Thursday. Saying he was told that if he went on "attack" execs would cancel the show, Sheen repeatedly referred to the showrunner as "Chaim Levine" before going off on Lorre's vanity card last week that said "If Charlie Sheen outlives me, I'm gonna be really pissed." (Lorre's birth name is Charles Levine.) Sheen said, "I didn't care about that vanity card, I went straight home and dispelled that, that was actually one of the few compliments that clown has paid me in frickin' almost a ...

Charlie Sheen Ignites ABC-NBC News War Charlie Sheen ignited a news war over the weekend by giving ABC News an exclusive interview about his recent meltdown--only to turn around and talk to NBC News too. Now, according to The Hollywood Reporter, ABC is "apoplectic" over the situation. ABC had touted its interview with Sheen as an exclusive, putting together a special edition of "20/20" that is set to air Tuesday and promising to run clips from the interview across all its news programs over a two-day period. It was, as they say, a major "get" for the network. Unfortunately for ABC, Sheen then gave an interview to NBC News on Sunday. NBC quickly trumpeted the ...

A Naperville man is out $200,000 after wiring money to an online girlfriend he didn’t realize was a fake. The 48-year-old man called Naperville police Wednesday to ask for help rescuing the woman, who he believed had been kidnapped in London, police said. He told police he started the online relationship 2 1/2 years ago. Since then, he had wired about $200,000 total to several different bank accounts in Nigeria, Malaysia, England and the United States, police said. An identification card the woman provided to him ended up being a sample driver’s license from Florida. Police said when an officer told the man the “woman” he was sending money to didn’t exist, he ...

The US government is offering private intelligence companies contracts to create software to manage "fake people" on social media sites and create the illusion of consensus on controversial issues. The contract calls for the development of "Persona Management Software" which would help the user create and manage a variety of distinct fake profiles online. The job listing was discussed in recently leaked emails from the private security firm HBGary after an attack by internet activist last week. Mark Pugash, director of communications for the Toronto Police Service, said the officer would send a written letter of apology to faculty and students at York University for inappropriate comments made at the university's Osgoode Hall Law School. The comments were reportedly made during a campus safety meeting on Jan. 24. Toronto Police Const. Wendy Drummond had said the ...

Get Chicago Alerts Sign UpSubmit this storydigg reddit stumble The harsh reality of the budget cuts proposed by Illinois governor Pat Quinn will become very real for tens of thousands of residents, as the state prepares to kill all funding for its drug treatment and prevention programs. Only federal Medicaid dollars will fund drug treatment centers starting March 15, meaning that services at centers statewide will face drastic cuts. Sara Howe, CEO of the Illinois Alcoholism and Drug Dependence Association told the News-Gazette that "80 percent of our clients on March 15 would be thrown out of care." That adds up to around 55,000 people ...

It crops up in our speech dozens of times every day, although it apparently means little. So how did the word "OK" conquer the world, asks Allan Metcalf. "OK" is one of the most frequently used and recognised words in the world. It is also one of the oddest expressions ever invented. But this oddity may in large measure account for its popularity. It's odd-looking. It's a word that looks and sounds like an abbreviation, an acronym. We generally spell it OK - the spelling okay is relatively recent, and still relatively rare - and we pronounce it not "ock" but by sounding the names of the letters O and K. Visually, OK pairs the completely round O ...
